Springbok Women target maiden playoff berth at Women's Rugby World Cup

Springbok Women's assistant coach Laurian Johannes-Haupt says the team's preparation for the Women's Rugby World Cup has gone well. Image: SA Rugby The Springbok Women plan to ride the momentum from their recent top performances into the Women's Rugby World Cup, which starts next weekend in England. The South Africans will take on Brazil in their opening match on Sunday, 24 August, coming off the high of beating a Black Ferns XV in their second match at Athlone Stadium. The Bok Women are currently in camp in Johannesburg before they jet off to the United Kingdom. In Group A, they will also face Italy and France. The Bok Women have had four tough matches — two against second-ranked Canada and two against the Black Ferns XV — over the past month and a half in preparation for the World Cup. The Tests against Canada were rather one-sided but gave the Boks a clear idea of what needed improvement ahead of the global showpiece. However, they performed much better against the New Zealanders, who brought a second-string team to Cape Town to take on the South Africans. Video Player is loading. 'The momentum we built in the matches we played was great for what we wanted to achieve. The win in the final match made it even more special because we fine-tuned our game and then reaped the benefits of it,' said Johannes-Haupt. 'The girls are heading into the World Cup with a lot of confidence, knowing who we want to be and where we are heading as a team. 'We got to play against strong opposition, and that ultimately just helped us lift our game. We wanted to tweak a few things, went through our processes, and the girls executed wel — especially at the end.' The Bok Women assembled in Johannesburg after a short break to put the final touches on their World Cup preparation.

Former Grey boy and NFL hopeful Ekeji to make Sharks debut

There will also be plenty of interest in how powerful flanker Bathobele Hlekani goes in Kimberley. Former Grey College star and National Football League (NFL) hopeful Paschal Ekeji will make his Sharks debut in their round four Currie Cup match against Griquas in Kimberley on Friday afternoon (3pm). Another player who'll be in action for the team from Durban and who'll have many watching him is Junior Springboks U20 flank star Bathobele Hlekani. The Sharks are hunting a first win in this year's competition after so far going down to the Lions, Bulls and Cheetahs. Hlekani, who will join the Lions at the end of the season, was one of the big stars of the Junior Boks team that won the recent World Championship in Italy. He will run out at flank after featuring for the same Sharks XV last year, but at lock. Bathobele Hlekani will turn out for the Sharks this weekend. Picture: Steve Haag Sports/Gallo Images Winger Ekeji (1.93m and 94kg) was set to be a big star for the Grey College team in 2020 but Covid ended those dreams before he opted to study agriculture at Stellenbosch University. He played Varsity Cup rugby and also ran out for Western Province. In June 2022 the Lesotho-born Ekeji, of Nigerian descent, attended an NFL Africa camp in Ghana with the hope of playing American gridiron, having been selected to be a part of the International Player Pathways scheme. He however failed to secure a contract and is now back in South Africa and set to turn out for the Sharks. Paschal Ekeji on stage during the third day of the 2025 NFL Draft on April 26 this year in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Picture:Another recent Junior Boks star, scrumhalf Ceano Everson has also been picked by coach JP Pietersen to start against Griquas. Flyhalf Vusi Moyo and fullback Jaco Williams, also members of the Junior Boks team, have retained their places in the Sharks team for the trip to the Northern Cape. In other Currie Cup matches this weekend, on Saturday the Pumas host the Lions (2pm) and the Cheetahs welcome Western Province (2pm) and on Sunday, Boland entertain the Bulls (3pm).

Brevis leads Proteas' top five highest T20I individual scores

Dewald Brevis 125 not out Perhaps more than the skill it took for the right-handed batter to bring up the biggest individual score by a South African in T20I cricket, it was the timing of the knock that carried more significance. Brevis reached the milestone under pressure, not only because of the Proteas being 0-1 down in the series at the time, but also because he had an opportunity to cement a place in the T20I side after former middle-order batter Heinrich Klaasen retired from international cricket earlier this week. Brevis knows how it is to miss an opportunity, as he missed one two years ago under former coach Rob Walter, making this knock special. The list of South Africans with centuries in the shortest format of the game recently lengthened with 22-year-old Dewald Brevis being the latest to enter the exclusive club at the Marrara Oval in Darwin earlier this week. Ongama Gcwabe looks at four other players who hit centuries in T20I cricket for South Africa. Faf du Plessis 119 There are few special stadiums in the world than a fully packed Wanderers Stadium on a Sunday afternoon for a Proteas whiteball fixture. Faf du Plessis scored his one and only T20I century on such an occasion, with the weight of the captaincy on his back. Du Plessis blasted 11 fours and five sixes on his way to scoring a 56-ball 119, the second-highest individual score by a South African to date. Richard Levi 117 not out Who can ever forget Richard Levi's maiden T20I century at Seddon Park in Hamilton? Levi, in his maiden tour with the national side, on the back of an impressive domestic season, blasted an unbeaten 117 off 51 deliveries, hitting five fours and 13 sixes in his innings. Apart from the pure power of the batter, what was perhaps more special about Levi's knock was that he was under a lot of pressure as he was playing his second T20I match. Reeza Hendricks 117 Perhaps one of the most underrated batters in the modern era, Reeza Hendricks features on the list with his brilliant 117 against Pakistan at SuperSport Park in Centurion last summer. With Pakistan having set South Africa over 200 runs to win the match with their opening batter Saim Ayub scoring nearly a century, the Proteas needed one batter to stand tall, and the stylish Hendricks took all the responsibility, hitting ten sixes and seven fours to reach his maiden T20I ton. David Miller 106 not out It is no surprise that South Africa's most decorated finisher features on this list with one of his T20I centuries. The left-handed batter brought up this one at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, as South Africa looked to level the series against a strong India side about three years ago. Miller finished unbeaten on 106 off 47 deliveries, a knock which saw the batter smash seven sixes and eight fours despite South Africa going on to lose the match by 16 runs.
