Programme to equip teachers with environmental knowledge
Muscat – Ministry of Education has launched a programme called 'Sustainability Labs' in collaboration with Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (be'ah) to equip teachers with essential environmental knowledge and skills, enabling them to be pioneers of sustainability in schools.
The programme aims to instil sustainability concepts among students and the wider community by promoting responsible environmental practices, such as reducing, reusing and proper waste disposal, contributing to a more sustainable future.
The initiative will follow a three-phase approach. The first stage involves central training, where trainers are certified at a national level. The second phase focuses on decentralised training, in which senior teachers across various governorates receive instruction. Finally, in the third phase, training material will be made available on the Moodle platform, ensuring all teachers can access and integrate sustainability education into school curricula.
Hafsa Hamoud al Harrasi, Communication Specialist at be'ah, informed that the programme is a strategic investment in education and environmental stewardship. 'We aim to empower teachers to be leaders of change in their communities and foster sustainable practices that contribute to a greener future,' she stated.
The programme will have three levels of impact – cognitive, emotional and behavioural. It will first enhance teachers' and students' understanding of sustainability, and then encourage changes in daily habits – such as waste reduction and reuse – before culminating in practical environmental initiatives within schools.
By equipping educators with theoretical and applied knowledge of environmental awareness, the programme will help integrate sustainability into school curricula and daily activities.
The programme is expected to create an environmentally conscious generation, capable of transforming knowledge into meaningful actions that benefit both schools and the broader community.
This effort aligns with national sustainable development goals and supports a healthier, more responsible approach to environmental education, a press release stated.

MUSCAT: The Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health and Al Jisr Foundation for Charitable Works on Wednesday signed a cooperation agreement to support the "Health-Promoting Schools" initiative. He added that the total number of schools participating in the initiative since its launch has reached 566 across various educational directorates in the governorates. Sulaiman bin Nasser al Hiji, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Health for Administrative and Financial Affairs, emphasised that this initiative stems from a strategic partnership to serve the public good, particularly by promoting health in school environments. This will be achieved through improving students' learning conditions, enhancing their academic performance, preventing diseases, reducing absenteeism, supporting their mental well-being and instilling lasting healthy habits — enabling them to focus, engage and learn more effectively. Dina al Khalili, Director-General of Al Jisr Foundation for Charitable Works, stated that this strategic partnership reflects the convergence of health and education efforts, realising a shared vision to provide a healthy school environment that enhances students' academic success and develops their essential life skills. She reaffirmed the foundation's commitment to creating a sustainable impact for students and society. Al Jisr Foundation will fund sustainable projects for three schools that have achieved the highest gold-level rating in the "Health-Promoting Schools" initiative over five years. Additionally, the foundation will oversee the initiative's implementation and collaborate with specialised teams from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health to develop a visual identity and an operational guide for the initiative. Education Ministry launches interactive English language textbook project
Muscat: The Ministry of Education today launched the Interactive English Language Textbook Project for grades one to six, under the patronage of Dr. Abdullah Khamis Ambusaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry for Education for Education. The launch ceremony highlighted the project's objectives and implementation mechanism, featuring an introductory video on the interactive English textbooks' content. The materials include interactive activities, games, digital assessments, and audiovisual resources designed to make learning more engaging. This was followed by a video showcasing feedback and real-life experiences from teachers, students, and parents regarding the new textbooks. The Undersecretary stated: 'The launch of the Interactive English Textbook Project reflects the Ministry's commitment to enhancing English language instruction. Starting with grades one to six in collaboration with the implementation company, these books incorporate interactive elements such as dialogues and audio exercises to boost student engagement. This initiative aims to improve learning outcomes, helping students grasp English language concepts and skills effectively. The Ministry will continue expanding the project to cover grades seven and eight, eventually extending it through grade twelve.'

Winners of Educational Award feted
MUSCAT: The Ministry of Education honoured the winners of the Omani Educational Excellence Award in its second edition for the 2024/2025 academic year, under the auspices of Dr Laila bint Ahmed al Najjar, Minister of Social Development, on Wednesday. A total of 25 teachers won the award including five female teachers from grades 1-4, five female teachers and five male teachers from grades 5-8 and five female teachers and five male teachers from grades 9-12. Dr Abdullah bin Khamis Ambusaidi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Education for Education, said that the award stems from deep appreciation for the distinguished efforts and dedication of teachers, noting that the award had gone through a careful transitional phase since its inception. He added that the Ministry of Education has developed a special electronic system to evaluate the second phase of the award within a process that ensures transparency and embodies the highest evaluation standards. The award aims to foster a spirit of positive competition among teachers to achieve excellence and creativity, encourage innovative initiatives in teaching methods, improve student learning and motivate teachers to implement interactive e-learning in the educational process.
