Nestle Q1 Preview: Muted profit seen despite steady sales growth as RM costs weigh
Nestle India is expected to report a muted earnings performance for the June quarter, with a likely 1% year-on-year decline in net profit despite mid-single-digit revenue growth . Analysts anticipate the company's top line to rise around 5–6% YoY, driven by a balanced mix of price hikes and modest volume gains. However, persistent raw material cost pressures and a dip in other income could weigh on the bottom line. While EBITDA may register modest growth in the range of 4–8%, rising input costs—particularly for coffee, milk, palm oil, and cocoa—are expected to impact gross margins, thereby curbing profit expansion. Kotak Equities models a 6.6% YoY growth in net revenues, supported by a 6.5% increase in domestic sales and a recovery in exports, expected to rise 7%. Live Events 'We expect volume growth at 3%, a slight improvement over the 2% in Q4. Growth is likely to be led by the powdered and liquid beverages segment and confectionery, while milk products may continue to lag due to challenges in the baby food segment and cooperative pricing pressure,' the brokerage noted. Nuvama is slightly more conservative, estimating 4.7% YoY revenue growth, with domestic sales rising 4–5% and export revenue declining by 2–3%. Price hikes—mainly in coffee and premium chocolates—are expected to contribute around 3% to the topline. The brokerage pegs volume growth at 2–3% and expects gross margin to improve by 115 bps to 56.5% due to recent palm oil duty reductions, with the EBITDA margin inching up to 23.3%. Still, the company is expected to face some profitability drag. "Lower other income could result in a slight decline in PAT YoY,' Nuvama added. YES Securities forecasts revenue growth of 6.2% YoY, led by 3.5% volume growth domestically. However, they expect gross margins to fall 110 bps YoY and project the EBITDA margin to contract 40 bps to 22.2%. As a result, the brokerage anticipates recurring PAT to dip by 2.6% YoY. Motilal Oswal expects 5.7% YoY sales growth, with 5.5% domestic and 10% export growth. However, they caution that Nestlé's urban-centric portfolio could face headwinds amid an uneven recovery in discretionary demand. 'We model a gross margin contraction of 60 bps YoY to 57% due to input cost inflation,' Motilal noted, while projecting EBITDA margins to hold steady at 23.3%. Category-wise, beverages are expected to lead the quarter's growth with double-digit gains, followed by confectionery and prepared dishes in the high single digits. Milk and nutrition segments are likely to remain flat YoY. Innovations, premiumisation, and deeper distribution remain structural levers for Nestle, though near-term earnings may remain subdued. With raw material inflation still playing out and urban recovery expected to stabilise only from the second quarter onward, Nestle's Q1 performance may be steady—but not much to cheer about. Investors will be keenly watching commentary on rural demand, pricing trends, and margin outlook going forward.
