Martine McCutcheon reveals how she became friends with her teen idol Patrick Swayze

Daily Mail2 days ago

Martine McCutcheon has gushed about her friendship with late Hollywood star Patrick Swayze.
The EastEnders icon, 49, revealed the surprising bond with the Dirty Dancing legend during a chat with her pals Rylan Clark and Scott Mills on their BBC Radio 2 podcast Pop Top 10.
Confessing that she had always idolised Patrick, who died of pancreatic cancer in 2009, Martine said she just knew one day they would meet.
'I was always in love with Patrick Swayze. This is a true story and I felt in my heart, I knew I was going to know him,' she told a shocked Rylan and Scott.
After the success of her 2003 role in Love Actually, Martine was offered another movie, this time playing opposite her dream co-star.
'I did Love Actually and the music career, everything happened and I was asked by my agent if I wanted to go and work and do a film with Patrick Swayze in Austria,' she revealed.

Martine spent the summer of 2006 in Vienna with Patrick shooting Jump!, a 1920s drama about the Jewish celebrity photographer Philippe Halsman, wrongly convicted of murdering his father.
'I met him. We sang She's Like The Wind together. He became a friend and he was just adorable,' she gushed.
Martine also told an emotional-looking Rylan and Scott that Patrick 'was the loveliest soul in the industry I've ever met.'
'He had met his childhood sweetheart Lisa, who he danced with at her mum's dance school. I said to her "if the man I'm with looks at me the way he looks at you after all these years I will be one lucky lady."'
Elsewhere in the interview, Martine was the one left in shock when Rylan revealed their surprising Love Actually connection.
Martine played unlucky-in-love Natalie who ultimately found her Prince Charming in the form of David, the Prime Minister (Hugh Grant) in the film.
But little did she know when her character is caught kissing David backstage at the Christmas Nativity, Rylan was there to see the whole thing.
'I was in Love Actually,' he revealed, as Martine gasped: 'Shut the front door!'
Rylan confirmed: 'I was a school kid. At Hill Top, I think the school was called. I had to take four days off school and get it signed off.
'I had to learn Catch A Falling Star to sing it for the scene.'
Martine asked: 'So you saw when I kissed Hugh?' with Rylan confirming that he was there for the scene.
Elsewhere, Rylan is reportedly having another shot at singing and is flying to Los Angeles to record in a studio with a successful songwriter.
His music career sadly faltered in its early days when his run on The X Factor ended with an early elimination during the 2012 series.
But he took a break from his successful radio and TV career last month to head to California to work with music icon Diane Warren, according to The Sun.
Diane has been behind a string of huge hits including I Don't Want To Miss A Thing by Aerosmith, Cher 's If I Could Turn Back Time and Rhythm Of The Night by DeBarge.
Rylan now looks set to join the prestigious list of greats who have worked with Diane, from Beyonce and Taylor Swift to Britney Spears and Whitney Houston.
An industry insider told The Sun of his new project: 'His first love has always been music.
'He has been writing songs for years, so when the chance for him to get into a studio with Diane came up he couldn't say no.
'He was out in Los Angeles for four days and they had a great time together.'
Last year, Rylan revealed that he had been secretly writing music under a pseudonym.

The power from thousands of UK car drivers is now in your hands

I received an interesting E-mail from a reader last week, following up on a recent long-term report on the single-motor Volvo EC40 I'm currently driving. It turns out that our reader, a keen petrolhead called Derek Dunthorne, is running the twin-motor version of the Volvo EC40, and although it's in a different specification to mine and something of an upgrade, we share many similar opinions. Advertisement - Article continues below Derek loves the interior, telling me that the 'Android-based interface is brilliant – easy to use and completely logical – although, like most folk, I would prefer knobs for the heating and ventilation'. He also gave me some background information on his buying decision. Moving away from several Porsche Macans, this would be his – wait for it – 56th car. What particularly impressed him was Volvo's interior quality and finish; they're not quite at Porsche standards, in his opinion, but better than the Korean alternatives. He initially considered the smaller and newer EX30, but found he preferred the more conventional driver displays of the EC40, which is something I happen to agree with. It also turns out that we are even getting the same miles per kWh. But the really interesting information from Derek was beyond even what our long-term reports can offer. It transpires that he bought the car at six months old with 1,800 miles on the clock for a discount of 33 per cent on the new price and a three per cent PCP (to hedge against depreciation). He was impressed with Volvo's used car 30-day exchange policy, and as it transpired that was a good choice, because he actually ended up using it. Unhappy with his first car for a number of reasons, he returned it and the company refunded his money and allowed him to choose another, which he now loves. In terms of running costs, his are a fraction of mine. He uses the Octopus Energy Intelligent Go tariff that enables him to charge overnight for 7.0p per kWh. This means he has spent around £120 on electricity in 12 months and about 4,000 miles. Like many, he has never needed to use public charging, with all his journeys having been no longer than the 200 miles that the Volvo can comfortably complete. In the digital era, we often hear about information overload, but Derek's E-mail and the context of his purchase and ongoing experience really brought home the power of information for car buyers. Which is what our annual Driver Power satisfaction survey is all about: real-world experiences from real-world drivers. You can read the 2025 results next week, but in the meantime 'be more Derek'. Fill in the latest survey that will contribute to next year's results, because there is clearly no such thing as too much information when it comes to changing cars. We need all the help we can get, from experts and those living with the cars we're considering. Buy a car with Auto Express. Our nationwide dealer network has some fantastic cars on offer right now with new, used and leasing deals to choose from...

Rita Ora puts on a VERY cheeky display in hot pants and tiny bikini as she teases her upcoming single

Rita Ora put on a very cheeky display in tiny hot pants as she continued to tease her upcoming single with a saucy Instagram post on Wednesday. The singer, 34, made sure all eyes were on her as she posed up a storm in the tiny shorts that she paired with a hot pink bikini. Rita layered a white strappy body suit over her diamante swimwear and added inches to her physique with a pair of strappy heeled sandals. To accessorise, the songstress wore a pair of large white Pucci sunglasses and colourful hoop earrings. Alongside her snaps, she penned: 'HEAT MUSIC VIDEO OUT FRIDAY. Join the YouTube premiere at 5PM BST. it's gonna get hoootttt' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Heat is expected to feature on her upcoming, still untitled, fourth album, which will be her first album release since her 2023 You & I. Rita has recently been supporting Kylie Minogue for the first leg of her tour after she previously revealed that Kylie's 2023 mega-hit from Tension, Padam Padam, was nearly given to her. The synth-pop banger - penned by Norwegian singer-songwriter Ina Wroldsen and producer Lostboy - was a viral hit for Kylie. But several artists were asked if they wanted to record it, including the Anywhere singer, because they didn't feel it was a Kylie song. Lostboy told The Sun newspaper's Bizarre column: 'We wrote Padam in February 2022 and there were maybe four or five months of us sitting on it, then I sent it to their label, and someone suggested to me, "Kylie would kill this."' He added: 'They were unsure and there was a moment when Rita was going to cut it and it was worming around a few artists on that label. 'They were trying to make it work but they didn't think it was for Kylie.' It comes after she kicked off her support gig on the tour in April at Atlanta's State Farm Arena. Rita gushed after her gig: 'First night of the tour, wow the reception was incredible and I'm so grateful for this opportunity to connect with North America. It feels like such a huge compliment to open up for such an icon.' Kylie's Tension Tour will conclude on August 26. She will then head to New York for two shows at Madison Square Garden before stopping for one show at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. The star is the highest-selling Australian female artist of all time and the third best-selling in the UK. But she has only now begun to make a name for herself in the US following the success of her viral 2023 hit Padam Padam. In the past Kylie has claimed her failure to catch on stateside didn't phase her and she enjoyed her anonymity there, however, her record label revealed in 2023 that the singer now has her eyes firmly set on cracking the US market.

Dublin restaurant awarded best pizza in Ireland for third year running

Little Pyg, based in the Powerscourt Townhouse Centre in Dublin, has been crowned Ireland's top pizza for the third year in a row at the Top 50 Pizza Europe Awards in Madrid. The awards, held on Wednesday, June 4th, also ranked Little Pyg as the 16th best pizza in Europe, meaning it qualifies for the World Pizza Championship in Naples in September. Advertisement The awards are widely considered the gold standard in European pizza excellence, and are curated by Italian food critics Barbara Guerra, Luciano Pignataro and Albert Sapere. Over 2,000 anonymous inspectors assess restaurants across the continent to pick the winners. The Top 50 Pizza Awards were launched in Italy in 2017 and have grown every year since. Each year, the organisation's team of inspectors visit thousands of venues anonymously, assessing everything from dough quality and ingredient sourcing to service, innovation and overall experience. Advertisement The final rankings are then revealed at a live awards ceremony, bringing together all those who qualified. Little Pyg is the only Irish restaurant to earn a place on the list three years in a row. Speaking from Madrid, owner Paul McGlade Jnr said that he is very proud of Federico Rapali, Little Pyg's head chef, who McGlade says is 'regarded as one of the best pizzaiolos in the world,' and of the entire team at Little Pyg. 'This recognition means everything. It is a reflection of relentless passion, long hours and the belief that great pizza can bring people together. What started as a dream has grown into something far greater than I ever imagined. Here's to tradition, innovation, and never settling for anything less than excellence,' Rapali said.
