New tigress replaces Kankati at R'bore fort

Time of India26-05-2025

Jaipur: Despite the relocation of the young tigress Kankati following two alleged human fatalities, the recurring conflict between tigers and pilgrims at the historic Ranthambore Fort continues to pose significant risks to both public safety and wildlife conservation efforts.
The forest department has often imposed intermittent restrictions on access to the fort, a popular pilgrimage and tourist site, as a precautionary measure following tiger sightings. However, it has yet to implement a permanent solution to this ongoing conflict. Most recently, entry was temporarily banned after the movement of tigress Riddhi was observed within the fort premises. Access was restored on Monday after the forest department ensured that the tiger family was no longer present.
Experts point to an increasing prey base inside the fort as a key factor attracting big cats. Over the years, small shops have sprung up inside the fort, and visitors often offer rituddal food items like chana and prasad, flour to wild animals or leave behind waste. These readily available food sources have attracted herbivores such as langurs and sambar, as well as omnivores like wild boars—creating a prey-rich environment that naturally draws tigers.

Balendu Singh, former Honorary Wildlife Warden, said, "One of the primary reasons the fort has become a hotspot for tigers is the increase in prey species attracted by leftover food and ritual offerings. The ready availability of these food sources is changing the natural habits of wildlife, encouraging them to gather in larger numbers and remain close to human activity. This shift not only disrupts the ecological balance but also increases the risk of human-wildlife conflicts.
Therefore, a strict ban on feeding wild animals inside the fort is essential to preserve both visitor safety and animal welfare."
Dharmendra Khandal, conservation biologist with Tiger Watch, added that structural damage to portions of the fort wall has made it easier for tigers—who are instinctively territorial explorers—to enter.

Govt starts process to hire VCs for 13 varsities

Bhubaneswar: Govt on Wednesday invited applications for the appointment of vice-chancellors of 13 state universities. The universities were facing difficulty in making important policy decisions and conducting faculty recruitment due to the lack of permanent VCs and faculty members, which the TOI had highlighted in a series of reports. The higher education department has invited applications from eligible applicants for VCs of 13 state public universities — Utkal University and Rama Devi Women's University, Bhubaneswar, Ravenshaw University and Madhusudan Law University, Cuttack, Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanjadeo University, Baripada, Gangadhar Meher University, Sambalpur, Fakir Mohan University, Balasore, Khallikote Unitary University, Berhampur, Shree Jagannath Sanskrit University, Puri, Rajendra University in Balangir, Dharanidhar University in Keonjhar, Vikram Dev University, Jeypore, and Maa Manikeshwari University, Kalahandi. VC appointment is necessary to start the process for the recruitment of faculty members. Teaching and research work have been affected due to the lack of faculty members. Candidates must submit their applications by July 5. Applications are invited from eligible applicants below 66 years of age on Dec 1, 2025, for the VC posts. "Applicants intending to apply for more than one university must submit a single application clearly indicating their order of preference, with the most preferred university listed first," read the official notification. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The notification stated the order of preference must also be clearly specified in the Higher Education Information Management System (HIMS) module. Shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview before a three-member selection committee. The venue and schedule will be communicated in due course, higher education secretary Aravind Agrawal said in the notification. Official sources said the interview dates will be fixed for different universities on different dates, and applicants are required to attend the interview for each university separately. The 2020 amendment Act said all teachers of a university would be appointed through Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC). However, the Odisha Universities Amendment Act, 2024, clearly states a selection committee will be formed to recruit faculty members by following UGC guidelines. The committee will be chaired by the vice-chancellor of the university or his/her nominee. The faculty selection committee will include an academic not below the rank of a professor nominated by the chancellor. It will have three subject experts selected by the VC from a panel of names recommended by the syndicate. Other members will include the dean of faculty or head of the department, along with an academic from ST/SC/OBC/women/minority/PWD as per the candidate present, to be nominated by the VC.

Anti-drug campaign: 1,736 treated, 144 nabbed in 6 months

1 2 Panchkula: Under its six-month flagship campaign, Nasha aur Hinsa Mukt – Mera Gaon Meri Shaan, the police facilitated medical treatment for 1,736 persons battling drug addiction and arrested 144 drug traffickers in connection with 74 registered cases. According to police, the campaign covered 408 areas, including villages, colonies, wards, and localities, reaching out directly to 16,320 people. Through this outreach, 1,886 persons struggling with substance abuse were identified. Of these, 1,736 received medical treatment and counselling, while 61 severely affected individuals were admitted to the de-addiction centre in Sector 6. "Many of these individuals were previously unable to even walk but are now leading normal, dignified lives thanks to the combined efforts of the police and health departments," said a police official. Alongside rehabilitation efforts, the police intensified their crackdown on drug trafficking. In the six-month period, 74 NDPS cases were registered, leading to the arrest of 144 traffickers. The seizures included 99 kg of poppy husk, 12.419 kg of charas, 8.315 kg of opium, 5.750 kg of ganja, 877 grams of heroin, and 10,900 banned drug pills. Anti-narcotics cell teams, crime branches, and local police acted swiftly on tip-offs to curb drug trafficking across the district. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo To transform the campaign into a broader social movement, awareness drives were conducted in schools, colleges, and public spaces, involving youth, parents, and the general public. Police commissioner Shibas Kaviraj emphasised that the campaign is not limited to law enforcement but is a community-driven initiative against drugs and violence. He noted that the real success lies in helping individuals reclaim their lives and fostering lasting social change.
