FIDE announce €1 million prize fund, ‘format enhancements' for World Rapid and Blitz Championship

Indian Express14-05-2025
The global governing body for chess, FIDE, have announced a €1 million prize fund for the year-ending FIDE World Rapid and Blitz tournament besides 'format enhancements'. Set to take place in Doha, Qatar this year, the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships are played over a six-day window and is one of the most prestigious events on the international chess calendar since their official launch in 2012. Of the prize fund, €700,000 has been allocated to the Open section — evenly divided between the Rapid and Blitz tournaments — while less than half of that amount, €300,000, has been reserved for the women's section, also split equally.
The format for the Rapid World Championships remains unchanged: there will be 13 rounds in the Open section and 11 in the women's competition that will culminate in a playoff in case of a tie for first place.

Meanwhile, there is a new knockout format for the two-day Blitz World Championship. In 2024, FIDE had introduced a new knockout format for the blitz event. That has now been refined. Only the top four players from the Swiss stage of the tournament will advance directly to the knockout semifinals (previously, eight players in both competitions qualified for the knockout stage).

'The new format is an exciting mix of the Swiss system and knockout. The increased number of rounds in the qualifying part ensures that the strongest players will progress to the knockout. Also, the final match-up is ideally scheduled to suit audiences across all major chess hubs,' FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky said.
'We are very excited about the event, and have already started preparations to produce the best quality broadcast for millions of spectators,' Sutovsky added.
The blitz schedule includes 19 Swiss rounds for the Open and 15 Swiss rounds for the Women, both played over two days, followed by semifinals and finals on December 30.

Squaring up! Wayanad top bidder on day one of premier chess league auction

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Premier Chess League (KPCL), billed as the world's first fixed 20-board chess league, was launched in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday with the unveiling of jerseys, release of the theme song sung by Usha Uthup and player auctions. Wayanad ruled day 1 of the auction with a top bidding of Rs 42,000. As many as 654 players have registered for the event, which will be held on September 6 and 7. The competition promises to promote grassroots talents and make chess accessible to all. In fact, its rule that each of the 14 district-based teams must include at least 10 Kerala players, is aimed at shattering the game's elite image and taking it into schools, rural areas and everyday community life, said the organisers. 'Wayanad did not even have much interest in chess. Today, it made the highest bid of `42,000 for Swayams Mishra, a Grandmaster. That's the aim: to popularise chess and take away the perception of its eliteness. The game should be accessible to all,' said Renjith Balakrishnan, the CEO of Premier Chess Academy who is organising the event. He, along with Deputy Chief Umpire K A Yunus, unveiled the jerseys for the umpires and teams on the day. KPCL features 25-member squads per team – 20 active players and five reserves. The 20×20 format ensures representation across age, gender and skill levels. Matches will follow six Swiss rounds before the semi-finals and finals, with blitz or Armageddon tiebreakers, if required. Renjith said the league is designed to transform chess into a spectator-friendly sport and give grassroots players a chance to compete alongside Grandmasters. 'This is not just about competition, it is about creating a culture where chess beginners and top players share the same team,' he said.

India's Divya Deshmukh to feature in Open section at FIDE Grand Swiss 2025 in September

India's teenage chess sensation, Divya Deshmukh, will feature in the Open section of the forthcoming FIDE Grand Swiss 2025 event in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, in September. Confirming her wildcard entry, Divya wrote on Instagram: 'So, the news I posted yesterday about was that I will be participating in the open Grand Swiss this year.' FIDE confirmed that, in addition to Divya, Russia's Aleksandra Goryachkina will also compete in the Open category. 'Both Deshmukh and Aleksandra Goryachkina, who have already qualified for the FIDE Women's Candidates, chose to request wild cards for the FIDE Grand Swiss Open rather than compete in the FIDE Women's Grand Swiss,' read a FIDE post on social media. After making headlines with her historic Women's World Cup triumph over compatriot Koneru Humpy to become a Grandmaster, Divya was in action during the Women's Speed Chess Championships this week. Taking on world no. 1 Hou Yifan in the quarter-finals, Divya went down after a stiff battle against the seasoned Chinese GM, losing out in the final tie-breaks after scores stood level at 9.5-9.5. International Master and leading chess pundit Tania Sachdev recently urged more women chess players to take up the Open category field to enhance their skills. 'I feel like young girls should play in as many open tournaments as possible. They should train and compete against men and not focus only on women-only tournaments,' Sachdev recently told reporters during the Chennai Grand Masters 2025. 'But I also feel that there is no need to take away women's titles. Because, for many players, that is an aspiration, encouraging young girls to take up the sport. [Doing that] will take away an entire generation of chess players,' added Sachdev.
