Jack Hinshelwood out to ‘break the mould' with England U21s and claims Young Lions aren't weighed down by past failures

The Sun4 hours ago

JACK HINSHELWOOD says England's young guns are out to 'break the mould' and finally end 60 years of hurt next summer.
The Brighton star, 20, could get his hands on his first piece of silverware with the Three Lions on his shirt on Saturday in Bratislava.

But beating old foes Germany to record back-to-back U21 European Championship crowns is just the start of what Hinshelwood and his team-mates want to do.
Along with the 2023 group Lee Carsley led to glory before them, which included the likes of Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon, they are dead set on conquering the world.
Hinshelwood said: 'We've got to remain humble. We're in the Under-21s. But we've got a great group and Lee always talks about how we need to break the mould of what people think of English football.
'We haven't won a major tournament for 60 plus years now. We know that we have amazing individuals in this group. Two years ago, they also had an amazing group and you see what them players are doing now.
'It's really inspiring for us and really gives us that extra motivation to want to do well and reach that level.'
Legendary names - including the famous Golden Generation - have failed to deliver for the nation.
However, Hinshelwood insists his generation is not weighed down by history.
He said: 'No, of course not. The past is in the past and there's not much we can do about it. We're all looking to the future and there's a bright future.'
Hinshelwood faces a huge year ahead - and not just on the pitch with Brighton and trying to catch Thomas Tuchel 's eye.
He revealed last month that he and his girlfriend are expecting their first child.

And speaking of family, Hinshelwood himself comes from a huge footballing one.
Great-grandfather Wally Hinshelwood, his grandad Paul, great-uncle Martin and his dad Adam, manager of National League York City and who will travel out to the final, were all pro players.
Some say Hinshelwood was born to play the beautiful game - but hearing about all of his team-mates' journeys has helped create an unbreakable bond between the group.
He said: 'I've learned so much from my family and speaking to the boys here, they've got amazing families and everyone's got different journeys.

'It's nice to hear how everyone has got to this point and it brings us closer together so yeah it's really nice.
'Sometimes we don't get to see each other as much but when you're away for a tournament you get to spend good quality time with these people and get to know them and you can build great bonds. We've got a great bond off the pitch and we're now showing it on the pitch.
'This is my first international tournament, so it's great being here and I've loved every second. To get to the final is amazing, but we know we've got one more job to do now and that's to bring it home.'
Hinshelwood added: 'Right from the start we came in with a lot of belief that we can really do well in this tournament and go all the way.
'We probably didn't really show up until the quarter-finals. But these last two games we've really put in good performances and the results have followed. We've got one more big job to do now.'

'It's going to be a privilege to play as the British No 1, that's what I've always wanted,' said the world No 4 at the Hurlingham Club. 'I've wanted to make Centre Court my environment. 'I'm full of excitement knowing the crowd is right behind me, that I'm going to be playing on the courts I wanted to play on since I was young, watching Andy Murray, watching all these great players. It's sinking in that I'm there now: I've got the chance to show people what I can do.' The Wimbledon draw takes place at 10am on Friday. San Diego college student Oliver Tarvet won through qualifying on Thursday to make it 23 British players in the singles draws, the most since 1984. 'A lot of British players, a lot of British talent,' said Draper. 'It is really exciting for the public to have so many good people in the draw from this country. 'It is a great opportunity for us all. I feel strong, I feel ready.' Sir Chris Hoy and wife Lady Sarra receive Freedom of the City of London

Sir Chris Hoy and his wife Lady Sarra Hoy have received the Freedom of the City of London. They have been recognised for charitable work for cancer awareness and neo-natal care, in addition to Sir Chris' sporting achievements as a British track cyclist. The couple, who have been married since 2010, attended a joint ceremony at the Lord Mayor's official residence, The Mansion House, on Thursday. Sir Chris said: 'London will always have a very special place in my heart, being the flag-bearer at the 2012 Olympic Games is an experience that will stay with me forever. 'Every Olympics is special, but nothing quite beats a home Games, and watching the city come together and creating memories in front of such amazing support at what would be my last is something I will never forget. 'It is a great honour to receive the Freedom of the City; thank you.' Sir Chris, a six-time Olympic cycling champion, 49, revealed in February 2024 he was undergoing cancer treatment, including chemotherapy. In October 2024, he announced that his diagnosis was terminal and said he had been told by doctors that he had two to four years to live. As well as six Olympic golds, the Edinburgh-born athlete won 11 world championships and 34 World Cup titles by the time he retired from competitive racing in 2013. He was knighted in the 2008 New Year Honours List after his success at the Beijing Olympics. The couple were nominated for the Freedom by Lord Mayor of London Alastair King and Caroline Haines, who is chair of the City of London Corporation's Epping Forest and Commons Committee. Sir Chris and Lady Sarra's son Callum was born at 29 weeks weighing just 2lbs 2oz in 2014, and Lady Sarra, a solicitor from Edinburgh who qualified in Scots and English law, is an ambassador for Bliss – a UK charity for sick and premature babies. Lady Sarra, who spoke on ITV's Lorraine earlier this year about being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), said: 'I'm deeply touched and honoured to have my charity work recognised in this way by the City of London. 'I feel very privileged that Chris and I were awarded Freedom of the City at the same time. 'Watching him compete at London 2012 in front of a home crowd that included our family and friends was so momentous, London will always remain a precious place for both of us.' Mr King said: 'Chris and Sarra are tremendously inspirational figures – Chris, as one of our most highly decorated and popular Olympic sports ambassadors, and Sarra, as a talented lawyer with dual qualifications in Scottish and English law, who has committed herself to campaigning for improved healthcare for children. 'Both of them must be commended for speaking so openly about living with cancer and multiple sclerosis, and it has been my privilege to support their freedom nominations.' The tradition of the freedom of the city is believed to date back to 1237. Recent recipients include comedian, actor and writer Sir Lenny Henry; choreographer and director Sir Matthew Bourne; and Lady Mary Peters, who won an Olympic gold medal in the athletics pentathlon in 1972.
