‘Don't play the fool with workers': HR minister warns Johor bus firm after strike over pay cuts affects Causeway commuters
Sim said the same operator had been under Labour Department scrutiny for some time for having breached the Employment Act in the past — and this latest allegation may have been the last straw that would prompt swift and stern punishment.
'I want to give a warning to this particular company: Do not play with our Employment Act. This is not the first time this company has a case,' the minister said while delivering a speech at the launch of World Bank's report on inclusive employment practices here.
'We had an operation, I think, last week or two weeks ago, and they [had not] complied with the Employment Act so we are initiating investigation against them under this Act.
'So don't play the fool with our workers,' he added.
Thousands of Malaysian workers commuting to Singapore were affected yesterday after some 100 shuttle bus drivers to the republic went on strike starting at 5am.
Berita Harian reported that Malaysians and other visitors to Singapore were stranded at major bus stops as well as the Sultan Iskandar Building.
Out of options, some workers opted to walk over the border along the Johor Causeway.
A bus driver told the paper that the strike was due to unhappiness over wage cuts, claiming that the bus company involved had cut their salaries by nearly a third.
Previously, the driver who only wished to be known as Atoi said, bus drivers were earning around RM2,800 to RM2,900 but were now being paid less than RM2,000.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 — A Turkish student who remains missing after a yacht capsized off Pulau Yu, Kuala Terengganu, last Tuesday is believed to have gone down with the vessel, Utusan Malaysia reported. According to Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director-general Datuk Rosli Abdullah, initial investigations suggest the victim was asleep during the incident and was unable to escape in time. 'Two of the victims managed to jump into the sea, but the missing individual is believed to have still been inside the yacht when it sank,' he was quoted as saying at a press conference after the Malaysian Maritime 2025 Media Day programme at the Sultan Ahmad Shah Maritime Academy (AMSAS) in Kuantan today. The two individuals who jumped into the sea were later rescued. Utusan Malaysia also reported that no new leads have emerged so far regarding the missing person or the yacht, but search and rescue (SAR) operations are ongoing. The current search area spans 7.89 square nautical miles, and efforts are expected to continue over the next few days depending on weather and sea conditions. The incident, which took place about 30 nautical miles off Pulau Yu, involved three Turkish nationals who were sailing from Pulau Tioman to Pattani, Thailand, when their yacht sank due to rough weather.

PETALING JAYA, Aug 3 — The mother of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir has lodged a fresh police report after recalling signs of possible physical trauma on her daughter's body, nearly three weeks after her death in a Sabah school hostel. Noraidah Lamat made the report at the Sipitang police station today after remembering seeing bruises on her daughter's back while preparing the body for burial. Her lawyers, Hamid Ismail and Shahlan Jufri, said the memory surfaced only recently when she was questioned about the state of Zara Qairina's body during the Islamic funeral washing ritual, which took place at Hospital Queen Elizabeth I on July 17. 'Our client did not include this important information in her earlier police reports because she had completely forgotten about it,' the lawyers said in a statement. 'She only recalled the bruises when we questioned her yesterday afternoon about the condition of her daughter's body during the washing ritual. 'She forgot about this fact as she had been overcome with grief since July 16 following what happened to her daughter.' The legal team said the newly recalled detail warranted a fresh investigation into Zara Qairina's death — despite Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail stating yesterday that police had completed their probe and would be handing the investigation papers to the Attorney General's Chambers next week. 'Zara Qairina's grave must be exhumed immediately and a post-mortem must be conducted to determine the exact cause of death and whether any criminal elements were involved,' they said. Zara Qairina was found unconscious at around 4am on July 16 after allegedly falling from the third floor of her hostel at a religious boarding school in Papar. She died the following day at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu. The death of the 13-year-old has garnered national attention, with some — including family members — alleging a lack of transparency in the investigation.
