Video: Here's an update on the Delta Center renovations
Smith Entertainment Group posted a video update of the Delta Center renovations on social media Monday morning. Here's what's going on. The arena, which is being retrofitted for hockey with the recent arrival of the Utah Mammoth, has undergone renovations since the NHL and NBA seasons wrapped up. It's projected to reopen ahead of the Mammoth's home preseason game against the Los Angeles Kings on Oct. 2. As seen in the video, the seating behind the two nets is now in place. Previously, some seats in the lower bowl only offered partial views for hockey spectators. The goal of this stage of the renovation is to provide full views for every fan in the lower bowl. This is accomplished by raising the event floor by two feet — the progress of which can be seen in the video. They also implemented bleacher systems that move both vertically and horizontally, allowing crews to position them in the necessary spots for both hockey and basketball. They also extended the playing surface by 12 feet on each end, for a total of 24 feet. Additional renovations this summer will feature four new industrial dehumidifiers to improve the ice quality and a 12% increase to bathroom capacities around the arena. 'It's definitely unique in the sense that most of these two-sport buildings are hockey first and then basketball,' said Larry Lippold, the architect heading the project, in an April press conference. 'In this case, we're really maintaining both sports first, equally.'Future stages of the renovation will include focus on improving the upper-bowl viewing experience. SEG's goal is for everything to be completed two summers from now, though things could change — especially if the Mammoth extend their season into the playoffs this year. When all phases of construction are complete, the seating capacity for hockey will increase from 11,131 (plus 4,889 obstructed-view seats) to approximately 17,000. Basketball capacity will jump from 18,206 to nearly 19,000. Mammoth practice facility construction In addition to the Delta Center renovations, SEG has crews constructing the Mammoth's new practice facility in Sandy. They provided a video update last week.
