State steps in to protect final resting places

Hindustan Times22-04-2025

MUMBAI: In a city where space is the ultimate luxury, not even the dead are safe. The living are now hoping the departed might give up prime real estate – their burial grounds and crematoria – to accommodate the needs of a rapidly expanding city.
Stepping in to protect the final resting place of the deceased is the state urban development department (UDD), which has instructed civic bodies across Maharashtra to refrain from changing the reservation of burial grounds and crematoria. It has also instructed them not to regularise encroachments on these plots.
Pointing to the paucity of burial grounds and crematoria, the circular was issued to all municipal commissioners and chief officers of civic bodies in the state last week. Citing the Maharashtra Regional Town Planning Act, 1966, it says only the state cabinet has the right to change the reservation of these plots.
The circular says the government is aware of frequent attempts to change or delete these reservations, but this would deprive citizens of an essential facility. On occasion, the circular adds, such attempts have given rise to a law and order situation.
Such is the paucity of a final resting place that plots have been marked in Mumbai's Aarey Colony, which is essentially forest land, for burial grounds for Christians and Muslims, and a crematorium for Hindus, for the residents of Goregaon and Marol.
In the eastern suburbs, sources in the UDD said, an educational institution is in the process of shifting a trust-owned Hindu crematorium to another plot as they want to expand their educational campus. The educational institution apparently has the trustees' approval while local politicians to stepped in to facilitate negotiations.
A decade ago, the reservation of a burial ground at Mandale was deleted for a metro car shed built for Metro line 2B.
Decisions like these have upset residents across Mumbai, who point out that the dead must be treated with dignity, and their last rites must be performed with due respect. To be able to do this, the city needs sufficient crematoria and burial grounds, residents point out.
Retired additional chief secretary, T C Benjamin, who served in the UDD from 2009 to 2012, said, 'When I was ACS in the UDD, there was issue over a petrol pump in an upmarket area, where the land use was changed and a petrol pump was converted into apartments. Where real estate was expensive, the land use of public utilities such as petrol pumps was being altered. We put a stop to this.'
Today, the city is knocking at death's door. 'Burial grounds and crematoria are essential public facilities and there is a tendency to change their reservations in prime locations. This will exacerbate the dearth of burial grounds and crematoria. The state government has made the right move,' said Benjamin.

Another Muslim country is plotting against India, extremist group receiving large amounts of money from..., BIG revelation made in intelligence report

Another Muslim country is plotting against India, extremist group receiving large amounts of money from..., BIG revelation made in intelligence report According to the report, Turkey's intelligence agencies are actively supporting radical groups in Bangladesh. This support is not just limited to ideology, but also includes financial and military help. The report says that Turkey's intelligence network has taken full responsibility for setting up a new office for the Jamaat-e-Islami group in Moghbazar, Dhaka. A large amount of money has already been sent for this purpose. Meanwhile, a student leader from Jamaat, Sadiq Qayyum, is currently visiting Turkey. During his visit, he is not only meeting key people but is also being shown around weapon warehouses and arms factories. Turkey's President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, is believed to be trying to increase his influence among Islamic groups in South Asia. To reach out to Muslims in this region, Turkey has also been organizing various events and programs, raising concerns about its growing involvement. Meanwhile, Ashiq Chowdhury, the head of Bangladesh's Investment Development Authority, also visited Turkey and during his visit, he toured a weapons manufacturing facility. Although Bangladesh has not officially sent any military officers to Turkey, the visit has raised eyebrows. According to intelligence reports, Bangladesh's National Security and Information Advisor is also holding closed-door meetings in Turkey. These meetings are not open to the public, adding to the suspicion. There are also signs that Turkey might be secretly supporting the Arakan Army in Myanmar, which could be a concern for India, especially in the northeastern region. These developments show behind-the-scenes connections between Turkey and various groups that may pose a threat to regional security. How big is the threat for India? Turkey is slowly trying to spread radical thinking in South Asia by holding workshops and offering scholarships. It is heavily funding Islamic institutions and promoting extremist ideology. This growing influence of Turkey could become a serious concern for India. Northeastern states like Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya, and Mizoram might be affected if radical groups gain strength in the region. Groups like Jamaat-e-Islami, with support from Turkey in the form of money and weapons, could push extremist ideas in these sensitive areas. In Kerala, NGOs linked to Jamaat are already active. According to intelligence reports, Turkey is also believed to be financially helping Pakistan's ISI. This suggests that Turkey may be working on a plan to use Bangladesh as a new front to create problems for India.

"All that you have done is against muslims": Congress' Rashid Alvi on 11 years of NDA government

New Delhi [India], June 10 (ANI): As the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) completed 11 years in power at the Centre, Congress leader Rashid Alvi on Monday hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance for targeting Muslims by passing laws while not being able to tackle the problems of inflation for the people. 'I have to say with regret that you brought the law of triple talaq against the Muslims. Brought the law of Waqf against Muslims, You are doing everything in this country which is against Muslims,' Congress leader Rashid Alvi told ANI. Criticising demonitisation, repealing Article 370, not listening to farmers and not keeping inflation in check, the Congress leader highlighted them as failures of the Modi-led government. 'You don't realise that during demonetisation, during the summer, so many people died, that is your minus point, and you think of it as a plus point. You used to claim that with demonitisation, black money would be finished, is it finished though? Also said that terror will end, but did terror finish? Just now, so many people died in Pahalgam,' he said. Continuing his jibe at BJP over Kashmir, he added, 'You removed (Article) 370 (from Kashmir), put people in jail, and put 8 lakh soldiers there, but in the last 11 years did you give jobs to people, have you reduced inflation? The Petrol-diesel which you have bought for Rs 35-40 you are giving the same for Rs 100 to the people of the country. Farmers kept sitting for two years, you were not ready to listen to them.' As Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government completed 11 years at the Centre, BJP President and Union Minister JP Nadda highlighted the various achievements of the government, including good governance, change in India's 'political culture,' and several bold decisions made. Nadda said during a press conference, 'The work done under PM Modi's leadership is written in the golden words because of the unimaginable and unique works. PM Modi has changed the country's politics, political culture. The country was appeased 11 years ago. Earlier, saving a political chair by dividing the society was the norm.' (ANI)

Prohibitory orders imposed in Assam's Dhubri after 'breach of peace' amid communal tensions

Prohibitory orders were imposed in Assam's Dhubri town following communal tensions, officials said. Demonstrations were held in the town on Monday to protest the alleged throwing of meat near a temple. Police had to use tear gas shells to bring the situation under control, they said. Issuing an order under section 163 of BNSS, District Magistrate Dibakar Nath on Monday said the restrictions shall come into force with immediate effect and remain in force until further order. "It has been brought to my notice that there is a likelihood of breach of peace and public tranquillity in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of Dhubri Police Station due to communal tension, riot risk, violent protests, etc," he said. Accordingly, he ordered all shops and markets in the Dhubri town area to remain closed and prohibited the assembly of five or more people in any public places. Organising any rally, procession, meeting, or demonstration has also been strictly prohibited, the order mentioned. It exempted the movements of emergency services from the purview of the restrictions, it said. "As the circumstances of the situation do not admit service of notice in due time, this order is passed ex-parte," it added. While speaking to reporters, Nath said, 'I appeal to everyone to maintain peace, and there is no need to panic and get emotional. All must stay indoors and respect each other.' A suspected cow head was found near a temple on Sunday, another officer said. Protesting it, a mob attacked vegetable vendors and e-rickshaw drivers near Dhubri Magistrate Colony and New Market, he said. Nath said that sufficient forces have been mobilised from both state and central agencies, and they have been deployed across the town. Asked if curfew will be imposed, he said, 'There will be no curfew, but a kind of semi-curfew will be there. All shops and markets will be closed. I request all not to pay heed to rumours, and one community must respect the other.' The district administration held meetings between the Hindu and Muslim communities on Sunday and requested both sides to maintain peace. "During today's protest, we lobbed tear gas shells at one place. No one was injured," Nath said without sharing further details. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said a number of cattle were allegedly slaughtered illegally at several places on Eid, on Saturday, and parts of the meat were thrown at multiple locations across the state. He said the police arrested 16 people from different places.
