Eddie Howe admits he won't have final say on Alexander Isak future at Newcastle
The 25-year-old Sweden international is currently training by himself after taking no part in the club's Sela Cup fixtures against Espanyol and Atletico Madrid this weekend, having missed the Magpies' trip to Singapore and South Korea amid Liverpool's ongoing interest in him.
Newcastle have rejected a £110million offer for Isak, who has three years remaining on his contract, from the Anfield club out of hand, but his situation remains shrouded in uncertainty.
Asked after Saturday's 2-0 defeat by Atleti at St James' Park if he may have to let the player go, Howe said: 'That's a decision that I won't make, that will be for other people to make.
'For me, I'm just trying to manage the situation and manage the team, most importantly manage the group of players that I'm working with day to day, that I love coaching and helping.
'We're focusing on [next weekend's Premier League opener against] Aston Villa. Everything else, to a degree, from my perspective is not in my control, so it's not my focus.'
Asked further about a report that Isak had been told he will not be sold this summer, Howe added: 'That's not something I'm aware of. Of course, there's discussions going on all the time that I'm not party to. I have no knowledge of that.'
The Magpies, who signed Isak from Real Sociedad in a £63m swoop during the summer of 2022, have placed a £150m price tag on his head in an effort to ward off potential suitors, but face a major task to persuade the player to continue his career at St James'.
Asked if he believed he could talk his star frontman round, head coach Howe said: 'If it was that easy, I'd have done it yesterday.'
The Isak saga has added greater urgency to Newcastle's transfer window mission, which has encountered repeated setbacks in recent weeks with Benjamin Sesko, Hugo Ekitike, James Trafford and Joao Pedro having slipped through their fingers.
They were already looking to recruit another striker to replace the departed Callum Wilson, and Howe will hope Anthony Gordon does not add to his problems after limping off during Saturday's game.
The 47-year-old said: 'It's an ankle problem. We initially maybe thought it was a muscle problem, but the good news is I think it was just a twist, so the initial feeling is he should be OK.'
In better news for Howe, Newcastle are understood to be closing in on a deal for AC Milan's Germany international defender Malick Thiaw, although he said: 'I've been preparing these two games the last two days, so I'm not updated on anything that's happened.'

Jamie Carragher points finger at new Liverpool signing over error in Crystal Palace loss
Liverpool's defence showed obvious signs of weakness as they were beaten on penalties by Crystal Palace in the Community Shield - and one player was singled out for criticism Milos Kerkez has found himself under the spotlight after Liverpool twice surrendered a lead to lose to Crystal Palace in the Community Shield. The Reds were beaten on penalties at Wembley in the season-opener after a 2-2 draw against the FA Cup winners. There were positives in the form of goals from new signings Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong and a good performance from Florian Wirtz. But Arne Slot's defence looked vulnerable, with Virgil van Dijk giving away a penalty which Jean-Philippe Mateta converted, while Ismaila Sarr took advantage of lots of space to beat Alisson. Van Dijk's trip on Sarr came after Alisson saved one-on-one from Mateta, who raced clear of the defence. And the balance of the new-look back line, with £40million signing Kerkez at left-back and £34m Frimpong at right-back was questioned by Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher. He noted at half-time on X: "LFC looking great going forward but susceptible defensively, as we've seen all pre-season. A lot of the goals conceded by LFC have come from going man to man really aggressively & leaving space in behind. Today Kerkez is getting dragged inside with Sarr leaving Gakpo chasing WB.' Former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman also pointed the finger at Kerkez. 'It was Kerkez playing everybody onside,' he said on TNT Sports about the first Palace goal. 'Everybody stepped forward and the left-back was stepping backwards. 'That gave Palace the opportunity – and Palace were exploiting it a lot of the time. They were putting balls into that area, especially in the second half, almost doing it blind.' Kerkez was signed from Bournemouth over the summer and started ahead of Andy Robertson at left-back. While he did make a crucial block in the second half, his attacking mentality frequently allowed space for Daniel Munoz and Sarr to attack and McManaman thinks Slot has work to do. 'I think the two goals today – not taking anything away from Crystal Palace – but if we're talking about Liverpool's defensive issues, they were defensive mistakes,' he added. 'There are things to work on and they will get better the more they get used to playing with each other as they are new players in a new system. But there are causes for concern because they are a bit vulnerable defensively.' Speaking after the loss, Slot admitted concerns over his defence. 'We conceded two goals [today] which we [also] did against [Athletic Bilbao in pre-season],' he told TNT Sports. 'We conceded a couple more against AC Milan. That is something we need to do better. 'Last season, it was about keeping a clean sheet and attack as much as we could, and then create a few chances. Now we are able to create more. 'But we are conceding more at the moment as well. And if you want to compete to win the league, one of the main things is not conceding chances, let alone goals. I don't think we conceded a lot today but too much to win the game.'

Tottenham 'open talks for Man City star admired by Thomas Frank' as Spurs look to raid Premier League rivals amid muted transfer window
Tottenham are believed to have began discussions with Manchester City over the recruitment of Savinho as the north London club plot their next move in the transfer window, according to reports. The Europa League champions were quick to change their manager in the aftermath of a decidedly mixed season that saw them win European honours but finish 17th in the Premier League, trading Ange Postecoglou for Brentford head coach Thomas Frank. But their transfer business has given some fans pause, with only a handful of deals done over the summer so far after securing standout forward target Mohammed Kudus from West Ham. Spurs were thwarted in their pursuit of Nottingham Forest 's Morgan Gibbs-White, with the Tricky Trees threatening to report their rivals for an allegedly 'illegal' approach after Tottenham activated the attacking midfielder's £60million release clause. Frank's side have also lost a number of key figures, with talismanic captain Son Heung-min moving to LAFC, and James Maddison suffering an ACL injury which will keep him out for much of the season. But with just under a month left of the window, Tottenham appear to be primed to restart their bid to bolster their attacking ranks. As per Fabrizio Romano, the two Premier League clubs are believed to be in negotiations over the winger, who arrived at the Etihad just one season ago. Frank is thought to see Savinho as an ideal player for his vision for his new club, and the Brazil star is believed to be open to a move south should the opportunity arise. The 21-year-old has been part of the City Football Group eco-system for over three years, with the attacked bought from Atletico Mineiro by City's sister club Troyes in 2022. Savinho then cut his teeth at PSV Eindhoven before a formative loan move to fellow City Football Group club Girona, where he played a key role in their title-chasing 2023-24 season. The player's move to jewel in the organisation's crown came amid a hail of fanfare last July, and Savinho ended the season having made 48 appearances under Pep Guardiola throughout the club's challenging 2024-25 season. Before Tottenham's move for the star, there were few suggestions Man City were keen to offload Savinho, with the player featuring in their Club World Cup campaign - and scoring a goal and registering an additional assist in the United States. In the wake of Maddison's ACL injury, Tottenham have also been keeping tabs on Como star Nico Paz. Mail Sport reported last week while Spurs have not yet made a move for the £52m midfielder, the Argentina international is among their targets as the squad looks for reinforcements centrally.

Video Oliver Glasner used to inspire Crystal Palace to Community Shield triumph revealed
The Crystal Palace boss and his side followed up May's FA Cup triumph at Wembley by defeating the Premier League champions on penalties in the traditional curtain-raiser to the new season Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner inspired his side to Community Shield success by showing them a video of fans celebrating their FA Cup glory. The Eagles took down another giant as they beat Premier League champions Liverpool just 85 days after they shocked Manchester City to win the Cup. Keeper Dean Henderson was the penalty hero again as he saved two spot-kicks - including an incredible one to deny Alexis Mac Allister. Glasner said: 'We showed the players a video before we went to Wembley about the happiness of the fans winning the FA Cup. This is the emotional reward. You can't buy it for all the money in the world. Our fans deserved it. They are always supporting us and pushing the team forward and it is a great connection. We were all rewarded and this stays forever.' Henderson denied Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott in the shootout after Mo Salah skied his spot kick as Palace picked up the trophy in the season's curtain-raiser. The former Manchester United keeper used notes on a water bottle which he hid in his towel. It followed his save from Omar Marmoush when Palace beat City in May to win silverware for the first time in their history. Glasner added: 'We know that dean is a great goalkeeper. The day before the meeting at the hotel with the analysts and the goalkeeper coach they went through all the penalty takers from Liverpool and he is well prepared.' The Palace boss confirmed that defender Marc Guehi came off with cramp rather than injury with the England international linked to a move away before the transfer window closes. Palace will find out today if their CAS appeal on being demoted to the Europa Conference League was successful over joint-ownership issues. 'It will be good to put it behind us but I don't want that to come across as any kind of fatalism,' says chairman Steve Parish. 'I am determined that we will get the right outcome. If we don't get the right outcome, we will have to look at steps after that. "But even more after Friday, I do not understand how we cannot be in that competition. It is up to the judges to decide, we trust them. Let's see.'
