ECI resolves issue of similar voter card numbers in different states

The official source said the issue cropped up because similar series were used by different Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) in such cases since 2005.
To resolve this long-pending problem, the entire electoral database of over 99 crore electors was searched by CEOs of all the 36 States/UTs and EROs of all the 4,123 Assembly constituencies with 10.50 lakh polling stations.
On average, there are about 1,000 electors per polling station. The figure of similar EPIC numbers found was miniscule, i.e. averaging to around 1 (one) in 4 (four) polling stations, said an official source.
During the field-level verification, it was found that holders of such similar EPIC numbers were genuine electors in different Assembly constituencies and different polling stations. All such electors have since been issued new EPIC cards with new numbers.
The genesis of the issue has been traced to 2005, when various States/ UTs were using Assembly Constituency-wise different alphanumeric series in a decentralised manner, the source said.
These series had to be changed again in 2008, after delimitation of the constituencies. During this period, some Assembly Constituencies erroneously continued to use either the old series or, because of typographic errors, used the series allotted to some other constituencies.
Every voter's name is in the electoral roll of the polling station, where he/she is an ordinary resident. Having an EPIC of a similar number never enabled any such person to vote at any other polling station. Thus, the issue of a similar EPIC could not have impacted the results of any elections, said the source.
In February, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of manipulating the electoral rolls "with the blessings of the ECI" and enrolling people from Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat as electors in West Bengal. She had also asked her party leaders to find out the "fake voters".

Kolkata: The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal has removed the name of Newton Das from the voter list, officials said on Friday. He was seen participating in the 2024 student movement in Bangladesh. The decision was taken after a thorough investigation by the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) on the directions of the Election Commission of India (ECI). Newton Das, having dual citizenship of India and Bangladesh, was a registered voter in the Kakdwip Assembly constituency in the South 24 Parganas district. He was actively involved in the student 'movement' in Bangladesh last year. Insiders from the CEO's office said the decision to remove Das's name from the voters' list was taken after the election-related senior officials received two consecutive reports from the office of the Kakdwip sub-divisional officer on this count. Sources said that not being satisfied with the first report on the matter, the office of the CEO, West Bengal, asked for a second report from the office of the Kakdwip sub-divisional officer and after studying the reports in detail, it was finally decided to delete Das's name from the voters' list. The controversy surfaced after some whistleblowers highlighted the picture of Newton Das, a registered voter with Kakdwip Assembly constituency, featuring in the students' movement in Bangladesh last year on social media. The whistleblowers also claimed that Das had dual citizenship of India and Bangladesh. Even Tapan Das, a cousin of Newton Das and also a registered voter in the Kakdwip Assembly constituency, confirmed to the investigating officials and to the media persons that Newton had voter cards both in India and Bangladesh. However, since the beginning, Newton denied the allegations of holding Bangladeshi citizenship, though he did not deny having gone to the country and participating in the students' movement there. According to him, he had been a voter of the Kakdwip Assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas district since 2014 and had also voted in the Lok Sabha elections that year. He claimed that he went to Bangladesh in 2024 in order to address some issues relating to his ancestral property there, and during that period, he got involved with the students' movement there. He also claimed that in 2017 he lost the EPIC card, which was issued to him in 2014, and in 2018 he was issued a fresh card. He also admitted that the Trinamool Congress MLA from Kakdwip, Manturam Pakhira, helped him get the new EPIC card. The West Bengal unit of the BJP created uproar on the issue and claimed that Newton's example validates their long-time allegations of Trinamool Congress and the state administration enlisting Bangladeshi nationals in the state's voters list.

Telangana HC extends interim relief to CM Revanth Reddy in defamation case
HYDERABAD: Justice K Lakshman of the Telangana High Court on Thursday extended interim orders in favour of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy until June 27 in a case related to alleged defamatory remarks made by him during a public meeting in Kothagudem last year in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The orders were originally passed on April 25 in connection with a criminal quash petition filed by the chief minister. The CM reportedly accused the BJP of planning to abolish reservations if voted to power and is also alleged to have displayed a morphed video of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The BJP maintains that the remarks and visuals were aimed at damaging the party's image. Kasam Venkateswarlu, a BJP supporter, filed the complaint that led to the present criminal proceedings. The case is currently being heard before the Principal Special Judicial First Class Magistrate for Excise Cases. In his interim order, Justice Lakshman has also dispensed with Revanth Reddy's personal appearance before the trial court. During the hearing, the CM's legal counsel argued that the statements were made in a political context and should not be construed as defamatory. Revanth acquitted in 2023 case Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy was on Thursday acquitted by a local sessions court in Nampally in a case related to the alleged offensive remarks he made against police when he was TPCC chief in August 2023. The court noted that the accused was found not guilty of the offence punishable under Sections 294 B (uttering any obscene song or words in or near a public place), 189 (threat of injury to any public servant) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC. The accused was also acquitted under Section 248(1) CrPC. According to the complaint, the then TPCC chief, during a press meet organised at Gandhi Bhavan in Hyderabad on August 14, 2023, threatened to strip and beat up the Mahbubnagar police. Political leaders should reflect on how inappropriate it is to criticise the police by making baseless accusations and humiliating allegations, the complaint said and added, 'In recent times, some political leaders are trying to demoralise the Telangana police with such cheap words for their personal popularity.' However, due to lack of evidence, the court acquitted him.

Telangana should write to Centre, seek CBI probe into KLIS irregularities: BJP leader DK Aruna
HANAMKONDA: BJP vice-president DK Aruna on Thursday demanded that the state government write a letter to the Centre, seeking a CBI inquiry into the alleged irregularities in the execution of Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS). Speaking to the media after attending a photo exhibition marking 11 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government at the Centre, held at Hunter Road in Hanamkonda district, she said: 'Ahead of the Assembly elections, Rahul Gandhi and A Revanth Reddy said that the Congress, if voted to power, would expose corruption perpetrated by KCR in Kaleshwaram project and send him to jail. Why is Revanth Reddy now hesitating to seek a CBI inquiry?' 'Just one individual, an executive engineer, was found to be involved in a scam worth hundreds of crores. One wonders how many people were involved in this scam and how much public money was looted during the BRS regime,' she alleged. Asserting that the BJP stands by its claims on Kaleshwaram project, she said: 'We are going to prove that irregularities occurred in execution of the Kaleshwaram project.' The Mahbubnagar MP also slammed CM Revanth Reddy for not taking any action against those responsible for the alleged phone-tapping case. 'Revanth Reddy said that those involved in the phone-tapping will be punished by the government. But till now there is no action,' she said, asking: 'Why don't you hand over the phone-tapping case to the CBI?'
