TikTok user accused of Gold Reef City racism allegations makes first court appearance
The case first made headlines in 2023 after an event at Gold Reef City, where Madlanga accused a group of young adults of being racist.
AfriForum's Private Prosecution Unit represents the complainants, Reece Lopes, Milan Kruijer and Jude Fraser-Grant, who were targeted on social media after Madlanga shared TikTok posts, identifying them as the ones who purportedly were racist.
In the posts, published on July 6, 2023, Madlanga claimed that while she and her siblings were waiting in a queue at Gold Reef City, the trio directed monkey sounds at them. The three deny doing so.
In October 2023, the Private Prosecution Unit successfully applied for a protection order against Madlanga, prohibiting her from further harassing or enlisting the help of others to harass the complainants.
The unit has previously stated publicly that false claims of racism should be dealt with as seriously as bona fide allegations of such discrimination.
Madlanga has not denied publishing the posts or accusing the trio of racism. During the protection order hearing, she defended the posts and allegations as 'her truth'.
Despite recording videos of the three people in the queue, she has not yet presented evidence to back up her accusations of racism made during the protection order hearing.
In March this year, Madlanga's attorney, Rupert Candy, told Caxton Local Media that his client will appeal the March 2024 harassment judgment against her. He also provided an affidavit that denies she is guilty of any crimes. She further denies that her conduct was intended to cause serious injury to the dignity of the complainants.
Yesterday, Candy commented on behalf of Madlanga and said: 'Unfortunately for the young complainants and their families, AfriForum appears less concerned about their complaints, and more on how they can score political points out of this. Our client is innocent of all charges, one of which relates to a common law offence that no longer exists in our law.
'Our client reserves her rights to lay counter charges of crimen injuria for the racism that she experienced by the complainants.'
In a written reply, Candy said AfriForum has been engaged in repeated abuse of the justice system, both civil and criminal, in an effort to make an example of this young student, as a warning to all black South Africans that they must stop speaking out against racism.
Candy noted that it was particularly telling that only their client's image appears on social media, suggesting an attempt to portray her as a criminal while the case is still before the courts.
The matter was postponed to July 7 for the docket to be disclosed to the defence and for a trial date to be set.
AfriForum helps principal accused of rape
The AfriForum unit is also assisting Jaco Pieterse, the Bergview College principal, as he pursues criminal charges against several prominent figures for falsely accusing him of being a suspect in a child rape case.
Barry Bateman, spokesperson for the unit, says being falsely accused of a crime can be devastating. 'Too often, people use social media to make false and unconfirmed allegations, fully aware that their claims will unquestionably be accepted as true. It elevates those individuals to the positions of judge, jury and executioner in their own cases.
'Justice will not be found in an environment where people prioritise clicks and likes over the truth.'
He says the Madlanga case, as well as the Bergview College matter, must demonstrate that making false allegations against people has serious consequences. 'The courts must send a clear message that falsely accusing someone on social media of a crime they did not commit will not be tolerated, and the accusers will be held accountable,' concludes Bateman.

EKURHULENI - Police fired rubber bullets at residents who tried to block the eviction of scores of houses in Germiston on Tuesday by throwing stones and torching a municipal building, officials said. After police gained access to the housing complex in Ekurhuleni, a squad of men moved in and hauled furniture and personal belongings out of the homes. Shocked residents accused the government of failing them amid South Africa's housing crisis, saying they believed the homes were part of a scheme to provide houses for black South Africans disadvantaged by the previous racist apartheid system. Two people were arrested for setting alight the nearby offices of the municipal home affairs department, police said, adding they were acting on a June court order to evict people from the complex, which was reportedly home to 450 families. Innocent people and the police were thrown with stones and we had to retaliate to ensure that we dispersed them," Major General Fred Kekana, the deputy provincial police commissioner, told AFP. "Somebody allegedly threw a petrol bomb at the Department of Home Affairs. Two arrests have been made so far," he said. Some residents insisted they had not been issued an eviction order and had been paying rent for years. "Our government is failing us. They are chasing us yet we have titles for these houses," 37-year-old resident Akhona Mbadi, a mother of four children, told AFP. After taking power following the end of white minority rule in 1994, the African National Congress-led government adopted a Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) to provide subsidised housing and other services to black South Africans disadvantaged by apartheid. By 2017 nearly 14 percent of South African households lived in RDP or government-subsidised homes, according to government figures. However, homelessness has risen dramatically from 13,000 in 1996 to more than 55,700 in 2022, according to government statistics.

Prominent content creator accused of allegedly sexually grooming a teenager

Prior to the incident coming to light, Richards shared a video on Instagram on July 27, saying that he will be taking a break from social media. "Like many of us, I found comfort in online creators, people who made us laugh when the world felt heavy. This one man (Richards) in particular had a big following, was hilarious, relatable and human." She said their digital connection evolved into a personal relationship, and they eventually met in 2021. "Over time we connected, first online, then in a conversation, and eventually we built what felt like a real relationship. We shared stories, encouraged one another, and supported each other's platforms. I introduced him to my son, and in 2021 we met in person." She recounted, 'What started as online fun turned into inappropriate sexual messages sent to my teenage son.' She revealed that these interactions began subtly, often during drunken calls, escalating to sexual conversations that her son struggled to comprehend. "In the beginning, it was calls, especially when he was drunk, first subtle, then disturbing. My son didn't even know how to process it at that time; he thought maybe he (Richards) was joking, but it got worse. By the time my son was 19, the messages became explicit. "I have proof, screenshots and I will be sharing them because the truth matters. So why bring it here to TikTok? Because I met him on this platform and because he has a large audience who deserves to know the truth. I tried to handle this privately, but they weren't men enough to face me. Instead they tried to gaslight me." She said that Richards and his husband used her son's sexuality as an "excuse" for their alleged behaviour. "As if that justifies sexual harassment from a grown, married man ... Sexual orientation is not consent, being bi-sexual is not an invitation for grooming. My son was a minor when this began. This is sexual grooming," she shared. She said after months of prayer, she had decided to share this information on TikTok, but felt it was necessary to warn others about the dangers posed by someone with a large following. "Sometimes we wait to speak up when we feel safe and strong enough. My son lives in France now, making a case internationally has been difficult. More parts will follow because funny people can do dark things to and it's always the people you least expect. "When I found out I was shocked, angry and heartbroken ... This man knew my son was going through a hard time ... You would think he would have been supportive and encouraging, instead he crossed the line ... When my son told me what happen I didn't go public or blast it online. She ended by saying: "This was manipulation and it started slowly with calls, messages and grooming. My son never received an apology, no accountability." The mother then followed up by posting a number of screenshots of conversations which allegedly show Richards telling her son that he is "horny" and was "going to masturbate", among other conversations. The video has now gone viral, leading to various TikTok users adding their voice to the matter. Responding to one creator's opinion video, the mother replied: "💔💔Your words honestly brought me to tears. The love, the care, the strength you've shown - it means the world. Just a kindly correction I just want to share something important. My son isn't bisexual. The person who hurt him assumed he was, and when I confronted them, that was their excuse. "I told them straight: no matter your sexuality, no matter your orientation - there is never, ever a right to hurt someone. This is bigger than just our family. It's about respect, safety and the right to be who you are without fear. Cops and robbers shoot-out in Pinetown
FOUR house robbery suspects were shot and injured in a shoot-out with the police in Pinetown on Tuesday. Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the suspects had just committed a house robbery when they were locked in a shoot-out with the police on Underwood Road in Pinetown on Tuesday afternoon. 'Police responded to a house robbery on Oxford Road at Paradise Valley in Pinetown, and as they approached the house which was being robbed, police identified a white VW Polo which was driving in the opposite direction and immediately attempted to stop the vehicle. Also read: Westville hospital rejects racism claims 'The driver of the vehicle ignored police's instructions and sped off. A high speed chase ensued and on Underwood Road, the suspects opened fire towards police officers. 'Police returned fire and a shoot-out ensued. After the shoot-out, the suspects were found to have sustained gunshot wounds and were treated at the scene before being taken to hospital under police guard. Two firearms, a flat screen TV, jewellery and two high-end brand handbags and home appliances were found in the possession of the suspects. A manhunt is underway for one suspect who narrowly escaped arrest. The suspects will appear in court when they are fit to do so,' said Netshiunda.
