Three months of Pride events return to North East this summer
The North East will once again host a summer of Pride celebrations, following a successful run of events last year.Sunderland, Gateshead and South Tyneside will host separate Pride festivals from June until the end of August.Peter Darrant, chair of the charity Out North East, said organisers were looking forward to "delivering three memorable months of events". The series of events will begin in Sunderland on 7 June, and will come to a close on 30 August with a concert in Gateshead.
David Alexander, principal and chief executive of Gateshead College, said this year's event was taking place in a "very special year", marking the 80th anniversary of college.He said the 2024 event had been "truly inspiring" and brought together "so many people from our communities in a celebration of diversity".
Pride In Sunderland will launch the summer of celebrations on 7 June at the city's Bridges shopping centre.Events taking place across the month include drag bingo film screenings and Carl Austin-Behan OBE talking about his life as an advocate for LGBTQ+ military veterans.The Sunderland festival will culminate with a concert in Keel Square on 28 June.Pride will then move to South Tyneside in July, with a dog show and a concert among the planned activities.
The Gateshead festival will kick off on 2 August at the Metrocentre, taking Pride activities into their third month.Highlights of the festival will include a town centre takeover, a bowling tournament and the 5k-colour run.
Local authorities have welcomed the return of Pride celebrations.Councillor Alison Smith, portfolio holder for corporate services and equalities at Sunderland City Council, said she was "proud to see another great celebration".Councillor Tracey Dixon, leader of South Tyneside Council, said the local authority was "delighted" to see the event's comeback. "Events like these allow people of all backgrounds to come together in unity, solidarity and friendship, embrace and celebrate our wonderful LGBTQ+ community and promote a culture of acceptance, inclusivity and diversity," said Dixon. Councillor Martin Gannon, leader of Gateshead Council, said it was going to be "another really exciting month" for the town.

Drag Race star reveals how Supreme Court trans ruling affects drag queens now
RuPaul's Drag Race star Kitty Scott-Claus has revealed how the Supreme Court ruling on transgender people has affected drag queens. The series three finalist spoke about how her fellow drag queens and other members of the LGBTQ+ community have felt 'dehumanised' by what the ruling means for toilet access. In April the Supreme Court ruled that the definitions of 'sex' and 'woman' in Equality Act 2010 refer to 'biological sex'. The Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) then recommended in a interim guidance that 'trans women (biological men) should not be permitted to use the women's facilities' in public spaces. Speaking at festival Mighty Hoopla yesterday, Kitty Scott-Claus told Metro how the ruling has changed how she feels when working in drag. 'If I'm in drag going to the toilet now I'm like, 'Well, what do I do?' 'Because normally I would just go to the ladies toilets if I'm presenting as a woman. 'If this is happening to me in drag, for our trans and non-binary siblings it so how invasive and dehumanising.' Kitty said many of her fellow drag artists feel the exact same way, but are aware that other members of the LGBTQ+ community are also struggling. She added: 'Everyone just thinks it's the biggest joke. 'It feels like a joke that we're gonna wake up from and be like, 'Oh, well. That was a disaster.' 'Stuff like this makes me so proud to stand with charities like Not A Phase and to stand with our trans siblings. 'We need to show our support for them now more than ever.' Reflecting on pride marches set to hit the UK during Pride Month, Kitty said they should return to their roots of being 'protest' events. 'We need to remember, like, Pride started as a protest,' she said. 'It is a protest. It is to show we're here, we're proud, we're queer.' The drag star was speaking during Mighty Hoopla, where she interacted with fans in 'Grindr's Gaybourhood' area of the festival. She spent most of the afternoon standing on a large Grindr bus, which will travel around Europe to promote inclusivity. The dating app's head of marketing and communications, Tristan Pineiro, told Metro: 'Festivals like Mighty Hoopla bring everyone together. 'We are continuing to show up and be proud and unapologetic. 'That is our way of furthering the cause. We're not going anywhere.' Mighty Hoopla is a two day pop festival, popular with the LGBTQ+ community, running over the weekend May 31 and June 1. The festival went ahead after fears it would be cancelled after the High Court backed a campaign by some residents claiming that the application for permission to hold the events had failed to meet all requirements. Speaking about the decision, Kitty said she was relieved that festival goers were still able to gather. 'Queer inclusive spaces shutting down all over the place and I think it's a sign of the times. 'We need these spaces. They're so important now more than ever.' Michelle is taking on a "strange" yet "exciting" new stage role, with the soap giving her some time off for it. As a result, Michelle is taking some time out of the show with Cindy heading away from Walford. It will be over the summer and she will be absent from filming for a month, while it's not known yet how Cindy will leave and how long for. But fear not, Cindy will be bringing plenty of drama for fans in the meantime and when she heads back to the show. Speaking exclusively to The Mirror at the British Soap Awards 2025, Michelle told us all about what's ahead on the soap. She said: "Well I'm going off in the summer. I'm doing my one woman show at the Edinburgh festival, called Motorhome Marilyn. "I don't think she's anything like Cindy. It's a play about a woman impersonator lookalike who lives in a trailer and dresses as Marilyn Monroe. But she's 60, it's kind of strange. "It's about failure, lost dreams, and feeling like life has passed you by. She's an interesting character. I'm really excited to play it. EastEnders have let me have a month off so I'm very excited." On what's ahead, she teased: "There's good, fun stuff, especially Pride. We've got Pride coming up. That's good, and there's fun stuff coming up with Elaine and Cindy about George." Michelle isn't hoping for a new love interest for Cindy any time soon. She explained: "It's good there's no man in her life at the moment. She has got the business, she's getting more empowered as a business woman and I think it's good. I hope they don't put someone with her too quickly. "I think she needs to find her feet again. I'm liking this fun side to Cindy and them bringing that out." There's drama ahead with love rival Elaine Peacock too, involving Cindy's ex George Knight. She told us: "It's really fun, there's a lot of strong women on that show we all get along which really helps. She's got a big family, she's got a lot going on. She doesn't like her daughter-in-law, her daughter-in-law doesn't like her. "But that's life, she wishes she could get on with her daughters a but more. But they're grown ups now." Michelle also defended her character's dark ways, adding no one was perfect. She revealed to us: "She's complicated, she's complex, she's chaotic but she's passionate. At least she's not boring. We need imperfect people, we don't wanna see perfect people on TV all the time. She's a bit of a mess."
