Captain Itoje humbled by honour of a lifetime

By James Toney
Maro Itoje has a reputation for choosing his words carefully – and he has just one to describe The British & Irish Lions squad he'll lead in Australia: tough.
Itoje's leadership potential has been talked about since his schoolboy rugby days, and it has only been reinforced by two tours of duty with the Lions – in 2017 as the youngest player in New Zealand, and four years ago with a series of standout performances against the Springboks.
Thoughtful and articulate, with an intense work ethic his schoolteachers once described as 'scary', he's a captain straight from central casting and the perfect choice for the raging furnace of a tour Down Under.
'The philosophy of the team and the style we play is down to the coaching staff, but I want this team to be tough,' he said.
'I look at this forward pack and I just see a group of really tough men. I want us to be tight, I want us to have each other's backs. I want us to play with the passion and energy that you expect of a Lions player.

'Our role is to make sure we give people something to cheer about. I want players to enjoy it – this is a unique experience. Who knows if this will be your last opportunity to wear this shirt? You never know what will happen. We just have to work hard and give all of ourselves. If we do that, with the talent we have, it will be a great tour.'
Itoje was missing from training on Monday, leading to intense speculation among his Saracens team-mates that he'd already had the call-up. The truth was he was at his brother's wedding – not finding out that he'd become the 47th captain in Lions history until just 24 hours later.
'I've been talked about as a captain contender since I was 21, and more often than not, I haven't got it,' added Itoje, who was only named England captain ahead of the recent Six Nations.
'I've learnt you can't take speculation as gospel – just because people are saying something, it doesn't make it true.

'I never want to be presumptuous and just try and focus on what I can control. It means an awful lot; it's a tremendous honour. It's felt very humbling and surreal. It's been incredible and I'm very excited to get going.
'You never want to be the reason why it leaks, so I kept the circle as tight as possible: my fiancée, my brother and sister, mum and dad.'
Itoje spent the night before coach Andy Farrell confirmed his 38-strong touring party having dinner with his predecessors – a red thread that dates back to Robert Seddon, who led the team to New Zealand on the boat SS Kaikoura in 1888.
And he claims that his captains in 2017 and 2021, Sam Warburton and Alun Wyn Jones, have given him a blueprint for the weeks ahead.
'Both had very different personalities. Sam wasn't the biggest talker, but he led through his actions – he was always putting his body on the line and was among our best players. His record speaks for itself,' he said.
'Alun was all pride, passion, and energy. He wears his emotions on his sleeve, he's very eloquent and very smart. Both were selfless guys and did what they had to do.
'It was just an amazing dinner, spending time with some of the giants of our game. It was the first time I've spent really good quality time with these people. The message from all the captains was: enjoy it, trust yourself, and remember to lean on the quality people you have around you.'

Coco Gauff graciously dismissed Aryna Sabalenka's French Open insult

Coco Gauff won her first career French Open title Saturday because she outplayed the world No. 1-ranked Aryna Sabalenka. However, instead of conceding she was outplayed, Sabalenka said after the loss Gauff won "not because she played incredible, just because I made all those mistakes." She also said the windy conditions played a factor (as if Gauff didn't have to play in the same conditions) and Gauff would have lost to Iga Swiatek (who didn't even make the final). Advertisement Simply put, Sabalenka was a sore loser, though she did at least attempt to atone for it on her Instagram story the following day, saying "Coco stepped up and played with poise and purpose. She earned that title. Respect." But Gauff didn't seem to take it too hard. During an appearance Monday on CBS Mornings, the 21-year-old dismissed Sabalenka's post-match comments as being high on emotions: "I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt." "I was a little bit surprised, but at the end of the day it was tough conditions and a tough match," Gauff said. "And for me, I know when I step on the court -- I'm from Florida. I've played in the wind a lot -- and I know when I play on a windy day, you're not going to win by hitting winners. You're not going to win by playing pretty tennis... And also when you're playing Aryna, she's such a tough hitter, so you know she's going to hit winners, so you kind of have to make her make those mistakes. So, I think everything that I did was for a reason and for a purpose. That's how I needed to play today. I knew that mentally going on to the court that's what I needed to do. And if it went her way, I would've credited her as well." Gauff showed real maturity there. Seems like other players should take notes. Diego Lopes, Yair Rodriguez trade barbs over avoiding fights – with more than each other

Diego Lopes, Yair Rodriguez trade barbs over avoiding fights – with more than each other The drama between Diego Lopes and Yair Rodriguez has ramped up. After getting into a heated confrontation at the UFC 314 pre-fight press conference in April, it seemed things died down until now. Lopes, a former UFC title challenger, took to Instagram on Monday to accuse "El Pantera" of turning him down for this year's Noche UFC event in September. "Hey, Yair Rodriguez, I just learned that you got a call from Hunter (Campbell), and you turned down to fight me at Noche UFC," Lopes wrote on Instagram in Spanish. "Where's the man that was in front of me at the press conference?" During their UFC tenure, Lopes and Rodriguez appeared to be friendly toward each other until that UFC 314 fight week in April. Rodriguez, who fought and defeated "Pitbull" on that card, went off on Lopes, accusing him of jumping his friend, Marco Beltran, whom Lopes submitted and had beef with outside the UFC. Rodriguez also criticized Lopes for representing Mexico. Lopes is from Brazil but has been living and fighting out of Mexico for many years. Tension has been high between the two since, and this latest back-and-forth proved that it's not settled. It didn't take long for Lopes to get a response from Rodriguez on Monday, as hours later Rodriguez posted a video on his Instagram, confirming that he did reject the fight but due to injuries from his fight against Patricio Freire. "This damn sport is tough. I'd love for things to be different because it's become a circus, to be honest," Rodriguez said in Spanish. "The p*ssy Diego Lopes is saying that I don't want to fight against him, and that's not the case at all. I'm a little disappointed with UFC with the fact that they offered me a fight with, because they just offered to fight him. Let's take a step back first. What happened? When I had the chance to fight Diego, he said no because I was coming off a loss, but now that he's coming off a loss, he wants to fight me. I don't think he's very consistent with what he says. I obviously don't have any problem fighting him. If you ask me, I'd rather fight him in the damn street because a fight against him in the UFC doesn't do much for me. I'm not going to get paid more. It does absolutely nothing. It won't put me in a better position either because he's coming off a loss. "I'm also still injured from the last fight, so before anything, I first have to see where I'm at with that. I went to see a doctor, and he recommended surgery. Obviously I'm avoiding that at all cost, but let's see where this situation takes me. I just wanted to come on here and clarify the situation. I have not turned down the fight, and I'd be more than happy to fight against this damn sh*t-head and his entire team, who can all suck it. So just that. I want you guys to understand my position because I'm already getting attacked, and what else can you expect. People always come and attack when you're down and hurt. But that's it. Let's see what happens with my health and if I can avoid the surgery." Rodriguez went on to accuse Lopes of turning down a fight himself. He claims rising contender Jean Silva is looking to fight Lopes, and Lopes is trying to avoid him. "In the meantime, I'd like to see Diego stop running from Jean Silva and have a showdown with him," Rodriguez said. "He's running from him. But yeah, let's see what happens with my health, and we'll take it from there." Lopes didn't stay quiet about Rodriguez's rebuttal. He made a second post on Instagram addressing the claim of avoiding Silva. "Let's look at the facts," Lopes wrote in Spanish. "After the fight against Volk, UFC contacted me asking how my health was. I gave them all the recommendations that the doctors gave me, which was that I'd be ready for September. They offered me Aaron Pico, I said yes. Two days later, I was offered Jean Silva, I said yes. When UFC changed Noche UFC to San Antonio, (UFC offered) Yair Rodriguez, I said yes. I also offered to fight Movsar Evloev and Lerone Murphy. If you have any doubts, ask Dana (White), Hunter (Campbell), or Sean (Shelby) if I've ever turned down a fight. The day that I turn down a fight would be because I have a serious health problem, and it's impossible for me to fight. My career was built accepting fights. There's a reason why I have 33 professional fights."

Bears rookie Luther Burden reacts to Packers releasing Jaire Alexander

The Chicago Bears are kicking off anew new era under new head coach Ben Johnson, where they have the firepower in place to become an explosive offense in the NFL. Quarterback Caleb Williams will get to work with an offensive guru in Johnson while getting upgraded pass protection along the interior offensive line and plenty of weapons, including receivers DJ Moore, Rome Odunze and second-round rookie Luther Burden III. Advertisement While Chicago will battle some tough defenses, notably in their own division, they appear to have caught a break following the Green Bay Packers releasing former Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander. Burden had a hilarious reaction to Alexander's release, commenting "Uh oh" under the NFL's Instagram post. Following Alexander's release, the Packers appear to have the worst secondary in the NFC North, which certainly has Burden (and his Bears teammates) salivating ahead of their pair of 2025 matchups. While Alexander wasn't necessarily at his best last season -- he only appeared in 14 games over the past two years due to injury -- there's no doubt Green Bay's defense was better with him in the game. In that span, the Packers were 10-4 with Alexander and 10-10 without Alexander. Advertisement As Green Bay's secondary gets worse, Chicago's weapons have gotten better. In addition to Moore, Odunze and Cole Kmet, the Bears added rookies Burden and Colston Loveland to produce in a Ben Johnson-led offense. With Chicago defeating Green Bay for the first time in seven years in last season's finale, it certainly feels like the Bears-Packers rivalry is a rivalry again.
