Manipur Shows Signs Of Recovery: Zero Cross-Firing Cases In 3 Months, Record Arms Seizures, Peace Talks

Last Updated: Officials credit this improvement to enhanced coordination among central forces, proactive roles by community leaders, and growing willingness of rival groups to engage in dialogue With zero exchange-of-fire cases in the last three months, record recoveries of arms, and a weakening of underground armed networks, Manipur appears to be slowly emerging from the shadow of prolonged ethnic unrest and insurgency. According to a senior official, a series of breakthroughs in peace talks, major seizures of illegal weapons, and a significant decline in violence have raised cautious hopes of a new beginning for the troubled northeastern state. Essential items have started moving from Imphal uninterrupted and reaching all areas, a senior official said. Over the past three months, the government of India has facilitated three rounds each of peace talks with representatives of both the Meitei and Kuki communities, historically at odds since ethnic violence erupted in mid-2023. According to senior officials, the talks have been 'constructive", with all stakeholders agreeing to continue dialogue. While joint meetings between the two communities have not yet taken place, a key shift is evident—most stakeholders from both groups are now participating in separate dialogue platforms, unlike earlier rounds, a source said. The government is hopeful about convening a joint meeting by the end of this year, a step seen as crucial for achieving lasting reconciliation. Record Recoveries of Illegal Weapons The most significant recoveries have occurred in the last month. The biggest haul took place on the night of June 13-14, when Manipur police and security forces recovered 328 weapons from five districts in the Imphal Valley. In the third-largest seizure, security forces recovered 203 weapons during operations in early July. 'From the midnight of July 3 to the morning of July 4, 2025, security forces conducted coordinated search operations across the hill districts of Tengnoupal, Kangpokpi, Chandel, and Churachandpur, acting on specific intelligence inputs. The joint teams—comprising Manipur Police, Assam Rifles, Indian Army, and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs)—uncovered large caches of arms, ammunition, explosives, and other warlike materials from concealed locations," Manipur police said. Crackdown on Extortion and Insurgency Networks Security forces have intensified operations against criminal and extortion networks. To date, over 600 extortion-related cases have been registered, with more than 320 arrests made. Dozens of underground operatives affiliated with various militant outfits have also been apprehended, signalling a systematic effort to dismantle insurgent financing and logistics chains. Violence at a Historic Low In a major milestone, the last three months have witnessed only one isolated firing incident and no exchange of FIRs between hostile groups—the lowest level of violence since tensions began in 2023. Officials credit this improvement to enhanced coordination among central forces, proactive roles by community leaders, and the growing willingness of rival groups to engage in dialogue. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Trump's tariff may overshadow Rubio's first official trip to Asia, seeks to strengthen ties with ASEAN

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to meet with South East Asian counterparts on Thursday, in his first official trip to Asia since he took office in January as President Donald Trump's higher tariff threats looms large while America seeks to boost its relations with the Indo-Pacific countries to counter China's influence in the region. Rubio will visit Kuala Lumpur and meet 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) whose ministers are gathering there this week and have bilateral talks with Malaysian government officials, the US State Department said. Rubio is also set to take part in meetings involving ASEAN and its partners. Rubio's Southeast Asia trip is being seen as part of an effort by the US to renew its focus on the on the Indo-Pacific and look past the conflicts in the Middle East and Europe which has consumed much more time and effort of the Trump administration, as Rubio balances dual responsibilities as secretary of state and national security adviser. However, Trump's recent tariff measures are certainly going to play a spoilsport for the US secretary of state as the higher levies have been imposed on six ASEAN members, including Malaysia which will come into effect on August 1. Trump announced a 25% tariff on Malaysia, 25% tariff for Brunei, 20% tariff for Philippines and 20% tariff for Vietnam. Rubio is also set to come face-to-face with Russia and China's foreign ministers, Sergei Lavrov and Wang Yi, at the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia but there was no confirmation whether Rubio would meet either of them as he would be in Kuala Lumpur for 36 hours only. The US and Russia have been at loggerheads due to the Ukraine war. Trump on Tuesday expressed his exasperation with Russian President Vladimir Putin saying, 'I'm not happy with him, I can tell you that much right now' as Moscow ramped up its heaviest blow on Ukraine since the war started in February 2022, Associated Press reported.
