Cup-winning LAFC coach Steve Cherundolo to depart at end of season

Reuters18-04-2025

April 18 - LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo is leaving the club at the end of the 2025 MLS season, the franchise announced Friday.
A member of the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame, Cherundolo was a defender on three World Cup teams. But he made his biggest career splash in Germany, where he spent 15 years playing for Hannover 96 in the Bundesliga before beginning his coaching career there.
He said in a team news release that he will move back to Germany.
"It is an honor to be the head coach of LAFC," said Cherundolo, 46. "After much reflection and discussion with my family, we made the decision that at the end of this year we will return to Germany. I love Los Angeles and LAFC, but this move is in the best interest of my family, even as it will ultimately take us away from a team, city, organization and fan base that I am proud to represent.
"I am looking forward to continuing our work with the players, coaches and staff to make the 2025 season a success as we keep fighting to win trophies."
LAFC are 4-4-0 (12 points) and in seventh place in the Western Conference ahead of their match Saturday against the Portland Timbers.
LAFC hired Cherundolo to replace Bob Bradley as coach in January 2022, with the club winning the MLS Cup and the Supporters' Shield that season. He also won the 2024 U.S. Open Cup title and reached the 2023 CONCACAF Champions Cup final.
His record with LAFC is 87-43-26 in all competitions. In Major League Soccer, it's 58-31-21 in the regular season and 8-3-1 in the playoffs.
"Steve has been a tremendous leader for LAFC and has proven to be one of the top coaches in our league," said LAFC co-president and general manager John Thorrington.
"What he has achieved during his tenure speaks for itself, and we are extremely thankful to him for his continued dedication and hard work. We support his decision to focus on his family with this move at the end of the season. For the remainder of 2025, our goals have not changed. We remain committed to winning trophies this season. We believe we have the people to make that happen, and there will be no better way to close this chapter than with another trophy for LAFC."

Friday briefing: Lamine Yamal stars for Spain and ‘no crisis' for Sarina Wiegman

England boss Sarina Wiegman named her squad for Euro 2025 – insisting there was no 'crisis' in the Lionesses' camp. Russell Martin was announced as the new Rangers manager and Wales geared up for their next World Cup qualifier in Cardiff on Friday night, when Scotland and the Republic of Ireland will both play friendlies. Lamine Yamal stars as Spain edge Les Blues An all-time classic in the Nations League semi-finals 🤯#NationsLeague — UEFA EURO (@UEFAEURO) June 5, 2025 Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal scored twice as holders Spain beat France 5-4 in an entertaining heavyweight clash in Stuttgart to book their place in the Nations League final against Portugal. Goals from Nico Williams and Mikel Merino in the space of three minutes midway through the first half had put the European champions in control. Yamal, 17, slotted in a penalty soon after the restart, with Pedri then swiftly clipping home a fourth before Kylian Mbappe pulled a goal back for France from the spot in the 59th minute. After Lamal showed more fine close control to slide in a second goal, Lyon winger Rayan Cherki marked his debut off the bench when he crashed in a volley with 10 minutes left. A late own goal from Dani Vivian saw France claw back another before Randal Kolo Muani headed in during stoppage time. Spain, though, held out to make a third straight Nations League final, which will be played in Munich on Sunday. Sarina Wiegman shuts out the noise England boss Sarina Wiegman insisted there was no 'crisis' as she named a 23-strong squad for Euro 2025 following a tumultuous month for the Lionesses. It has been a far from settled few weeks as England prepared to defend their European crown, opening the campaign against France in Zurich on July 5. Both goalkeeper Mary Earps and attacker Fran Kirby had announced their retirement from international football, while defender Millie Bright pulled out of the tournament to prioritize her mental health, with Chelsea later confirming she had undergone minor knee surgery. Sarina Wiegman feels 'happy and excited' as focus sharpens ahead of Euro 2025 (Martin Rickett/PA) Wiegman, though, dismissed the idea the Lionesses camp is unsettled. Chelsea striker Lauren James, recovering from a hamstring injury, has been included in the squad, alongside 19-year-old Michelle Agyemang. 'We're going with this 23 to the Euros and I'm comfortable, happy and excited. For me it doesn't feel like a crisis at all,' Wiegman said. 'There is always noise, so we expect noise before we go into a tournament. The difference is in my first tournament, the attention and visibility with the women's team has increased. 'We have to deal with it and move on and focus on football.' Craig Bellamy wants Wales in focus Wales head coach Craig Bellamy wants his team in the right mindset against the rank outsiders (Adam Davy/PA) Wales boss Craig Bellamy says one of the world's worst football teams Liechtenstein have given him sleepless nights ahead of their World Cup qualifier. Liechtenstein – ranked 205th out of FIFA's 210 nations – have not won a competitive game since September 2020, and lost their opening two World Cup qualifiers in March. Bellamy, though, warned against any sense of complacency from his side in Cardiff on Friday night. 'We've prepared for Liechtenstein as we did for Turkey and everyone else – it doesn't matter who we play against,' the Wales boss said. 'I was up late last night. I didn't sleep well. Does that tell you something? I treat every team the same.' Russell Martin ready for Ibrox challenge Russell Martin is ready to meet the challenges head on at Ibrox (Steve Welsh/PA) New Rangers head coach Russell Martin has told sceptics he is looking to prove them wrong. News of the former MK Dons, Swansea and Southampton manager's three-year deal at Ibrox has not gone down well with some supporters. However, former Scotland defender Martin, who had an unsuccessful loan period at Rangers in 2018, is ready to meet the challenges head on. 'My whole career has been based on proving people wrong, really. At every level I got questioned,' former Norwich captain Martin, 39, said. 'I got to the Premier League as a player, I wasn't convinced I could do it, but I managed to establish myself there for a little while, played international football, which I'm incredibly proud of. 'So it's the same again as a manager – I had to prove people wrong at every opportunity.' What's on today? England manager Thomas Tuchel will speak to the media ahead of Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Andorra (Bradley Collyer/PA) England boss Thomas Tuchel will hold a press conference on Friday afternoon ahead of the World Cup qualifier against Andorra in Barcelona. Wales later take on Liechtenstein in their Group J fixture in Cardiff, while Scotland play a friendly against Iceland as do the Republic of Ireland when they host Senegal. Ahead of all that on Friday morning, England under-21s coach Lee Carsley will name his squad for the upcoming European Championships in Slovakia.

Albania and Serbia face each other in a World Cup qualifier that's about more than just football

When Albania and Serbia face off in a 2026 World Cup qualifier on Saturday, the match in Tirana carries more weight than just the score. This clash is one of the most politically charged and emotionally intense rivalries in European football, rooted in deep historical and ethnic tensions, especially relating to the Kosovo conflict and broader Balkan history. With national identities deeply entwined, organisers are working to ensure the echoes of past confrontations are kept at bay. The last time the two teams met on Albanian soil was in 2015, when Serbia won 2-0, despite Serbian fans being banned from the match. Both nations are in the same European qualifying group alongside England, Latvia, and Andorra. The 2014 Belgrade brawl fresh in memories A 2014 game between the teams in Belgrade was abandoned when a drone carrying an Albanian flag sparked a full-scale brawl. Albania was awarded a 3-0 victory after a ruling said the match couldn't be continued due to the hostile environment at the stadium. That clinched Albania's qualification to the 2016 European Championship — a first for the team. That match had already been considered high risk. Kosovo, which has a majority Albanian population, declared independence from Serbia in 2008 — a move Serbia does not recognize. Football, often a mirror of nationalism and politics, reflected this deep divide. As Tirana braces for the latest showdown, memories of that night — and the nationalistic fervor it unleashed — hover just beneath the surface. Serbia's tense ties with Kosovo Serbia and Albania remain at odds over the status of now-independent Kosovo, and fan rivalry is still intense. North Macedonia or southern Serbia. For players, this is a contest overshadowed by history, politics, and national pride — a reminder that sometimes sport is anything but just a game. Albania defender Elseid Hysaj, who was part of the 2014 match, said the chaos "should not be repeated." 'We should be calm and be conscious that we are football players," he said. 'We are here to please the fans and give our best for the victory.' Organisers remind fans it's a game Armand Duka, president of the Albanian Football Federation, called on Albanians to see the match as a sports event 'where the team gets support and positive energy from the fans to achieve the goal.' 'We want to give the message: let's live it as a sport festivity,' Duka told The Associated Press. There will be a heavy police presence, road closures, and searches of fans entering the stadium. Serbian fans are barred, which "will contribute to a quieter environment,' Duka said. The sides have taken steps to forge a better relationship. Albania and Serbia will co-host the men's Under-21 European Championship in 2027 in a project that aims to overcome political tensions. 'Players do not bear the burden of history or of the political tensions,' Duka said. 'They compete on the pitch to win, to give the best for the jersey they represent and, above all, to build the bridge of respect through the game.' Nationalists and soccer fans at odds Although political tensions have somewhat subsided in recent years, nationalists and soccer fans on both sides are deeply at odds. Both Albania and Serbia have faced sanctions from European soccer's governing body because of politically-charged incidents involving fans. Serbia's populist President Aleksandar Vucic, however, recently added fuel by telling Serbia coach Dragan Stojkovic at a big rally of his supporters that Serbia must win. 'Go there and beat them,' he said, addressing Stojkovic who was in the crowd. Stojkovic and some players have tried to ease tensions, saying it is just another match. 'Everyone says that the first game is very important," Stojkovic said of Serbia's opener in Group K. 'We are very focused on starting the way we want to and we will prepare to play the best we can in that sense, with all due respect to Albania.'

How three substitutes - and nine goals - cost Paddy Power 'millions upon millions' in one of the 'worst days in bookies' history' after Spain beat France 5-4

Paddy Power punters will have arrived at work with a spring in their step on Friday morning after Thursday's action-packed Nations League clash between Spain and France. Fans were eagerly anticipating the semi-final showdown between two of the world's top footballing nations with an array star attacking players on show. And it didn't disappoint in the slightest as a nine-goal thriller played out at the Stuttgart Arena. European champions Spain tore through the back-to-back World Cup finalists with goals from Nico Williams and Mikel Merino giving them a 2-0 lead at half-time. Lamine Yamal and Pedri netted a Kylian Mbappe penalty. Pedri then made it 5-1. However, the French almost pulled off a miraculous comeback with goals from Rayan Cherki, Dani Vivian and Randal Kolo Muani seeing the game end 5-4. And the incident-filled encounter was exactly what the bookies did not want to see. It wasn't just the goals that saw punters cash in but the impact of the 10 substitutions. Paddy Power have offered Super Sub - where a bet stays alive and rolls on to the substituted player if they're taken off - for 973 matches over the last 18 months. This was the most that the initiative ever cost the gambling company. For example, Mail Sport understands that Vivian coming on for Robin Le Normand and immediately committing a foul won punters somewhere in the region of half a million pounds. Samu Aghehowa's shot on target after replacing Mikel Oyarzabal would have also cost Paddy Power a small fortune. Gavi came on for Mikel Merino in 91st minute and was booked in 97th, costing the business around £200,000. A Paddy Power spokesman said: 'I thought the Nations League was supposed to be boring? I wish it bloody was! 'But fair play to the punters. They've come in, taken advantage of Super Sub and absolutely pulled our pants down, leaving us licking our wounds at Power Tower today.'
