Spurs' Victor Wembanyama says he's been cleared to return following blood clot
'I'm officially cleared to return. … I'll finally be able to play a bit of basketball again,' Wembanyama told the French sports daily.
Wembanyama was the league's rookie of the year two years ago and Spurs guard Stephon Castle won that same trophy this past season. Wembanyama was the front-runner to be defensive player of the year last season when he was diagnosed with the blood clot in his right shoulder in February. He was averaging 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, 3.8 blocks, and 3.7 assists when he was shut down; the only other player in NBA history to finish a season averaging all that was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1975-76.
Wembanyama has traveled extensively in recent months and spent time last month at a Shaolin temple in Zhengzhou, China. The temple is a place that welcomes visitors who wish to study Chan meditation, Shaolin Kung Fu, traditional Chinese medicine, and more.

Commanders are retiring Hall of Fame receiver Art Monk's No. 81 this season
The Washington Commanders said Tuesday they are retiring Hall of Fame wide receiver Art Monk's No. 81 this season. Monk is the sixth player in franchise history to get that honor, joining Darrell Green, Sammy Baugh, Bobby Mitchell, Sonny Jurgensen, and Sean Taylor. The team announced that Monk would have his number retired Nov. 2, when the Commanders host the Seattle Seahawks for a Sunday night game in Week 9. Monk was part of all three of Washington's Super Bowl teams during the organization's glory days and is arguably one of the greatest players in franchise history. He played 14 of his 16 NFL seasons with Washington before finishing his career with the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles. From his debut in 1980 through 1993, Monk caught 888 passes for 12,026 yards and 65 touchdowns during the regular season, and 69 passes for 1,062 yards and seven TDs in the playoffs. An All-Pro pick in 1982 and a three-time Pro Bowl selection, Monk was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008.

Expansion WNBA team brings back the original Portland Fire name
Portland, Ore. – Oregon's WNBA team has stepped back in time for its new name, re-introducing the Portland Fire. The WNBA expansion franchise, which begins play next season along with the Toronto Tempo, announced its name and branding on Tuesday–reviving the moniker of the city's previous WNBA team that played from 2000 to 2002. 'Our feeling is that the fire never died,' interim Fire president Clare Hamill said. 'Fans have been waiting for us to come back and we're back with the Portland Fire.' In addition to the name, the team has a new Rose on Fire logo and a color palette of red, brown, blue, and pink. Portland Trail Blazers owner Paul Allen, the co-founder of Microsoft, who passed away in 2018, was chairman of the original Fire, and the two teams played at the Rose Garden, now the Moda Center. The NBA owned the WNBA teams until 2002, then sold them to affiliated NBA teams or independent owners. Allen declined to buy the Fire, and the team folded. Portland was awarded a new WNBA team last September. The team is run by Raj Sports, led by Lisa Bhathal Merage and Alex Bhathal, who also own the Portland Thorns of the National Women's Soccer League. They paid 125 million for the WNBA franchise. The Fire and the Thorns will share a new joint-training facility in the first such partnership between the two women's leagues. The Fire have already sold more than 11,000 season tickets, surpassing the WNBA's previous best. The team will play at the Moda Center, where the original Fire averaged some 8,000 fans a game. But the launch of the team hasn't been smooth. 'We're pointing everybody to the launch and the pace at which we're moving and just giving everyone confidence that we have our arms around it,' Hamill said. 'We're moving fast and you're going to hear from us a lot.' The team planned to celebrate the name and logo launch with a community party on Tuesday afternoon at the Moda Center.
