Eydon returns to winning form with Aston Park success

Eydon showed his quality at Newbury (Steve Paston/PA) This article is brought to you by our exclusive subscriber partnership with our sister title USA Today, and has been written by our American colleagues. It does not necessarily reflect the view of The Herald.
Eydon served a reminder of his class with an impressive victory in the Sky Sports Racing Aston Park Stakes at Newbury.
Fourth in the 2022 2000 Guineas, the son of Olden Times has had his fair share of injury problems over subsequent seasons, with this just his sixth outing since that Classic appearance three years ago.
Sent off 16-1 in the hands of Oisin Murphy, Eydon travelled well close to the pace before surging clear for taking length-and-a-quarter success, justifying his connections' patience and booking his ticket to a Group One assignment in France in the process.
A big performance!

Winning trainer Andrew Balding said: 'He's been a project – the Eydon project – and every time we felt we had him right, he has gone wrong and this is the first time we've had six weeks without any problems.
'He's had so many issues at home, just lots of little things and one thing after another, and it was the same for Roger (Varian) when he had him. He showed a really high level of form for Roger, he was fourth in the Guineas and is clearly a very talented horse.
'This was always the aim and we were really keen to get him back on a sound surface and we saw the best of him today. Everyone at home has done a fabulous job to get him here in this form.
'He saw the trip out well today and I think the opportunities are there for him over a mile and a half.
'I haven't spoken to Prince Faisal (owner) yet so I don't want to jump the gun, but I thought something like the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud could work for him which gives us plenty of time, he's a high-class horse so it would be great to give him a chance at the highest level again.'

Taylor Fritz brands Perricard mega serve 'bad' for one reason as he shows true colours in Wimbledon interview

Fritz wasn't convinced by Perricard's incredible serve after winning the point against his opponent Taylor Fritz delivered an uncharacteristically colourful interview after edging past Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard to reach the second round of Wimbledon – saying his opponent's record-breaking serve proved something he's always believed. World No.5 Fritz was taken all the way by the unfancied French player, who took their Monday night first-round encounter into a second day after a winner couldn't be found last night. ‌ It went to a fifth set with two tie-breakers fought out along the way but Fritz eventually won out, taking the final set 6-4. ‌ That wasn't before Mpetshi Perricard made some Wimbledon history though. In the opening set, he recorded the fastest serve the competition has ever seen at 153mph. But Fritz, incredibly, won the point. Speaking after the win, a relieved Fritz was asked about it in front of the cameras on No.1 court and said: "Well yeah, I'd been saying to my coaches all week. They kept asking me to body serve, and I said I hate body serving, I never seem to win the point. "So he hits a body serve there, as fast as that, and I win the point. So there's your proof, body serves are bad!" It was meant in good humour as a smiling Fritz lapped up the adulation of the Wimbledon crowd. Fritz doesn't often give much away and that colourful exchange between the BBC interviewer and the American caught the attention of former Australian star Todd Woodbridge on co-commentary. ‌ Follow Record Sport on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for all of the up-to-the minute breaking news, video and audio on the SPFL, the Scotland national team and beyond. ‘Fantasy racing' for York with Japanese superstar in Juddmonte International mix

Last year's Japanese Derby winner travelled to Dubai as something of an unknown quantity having subsequently finished only sixth in the Japanese St Leger, after which he was a close third in the Arima Kinen and won a Group Two. Relatively unconsidered in the betting for the Sheema Classic, he beat Calandgan by a length and a quarter in the Meydan feature, with Rebel's Romance adding substance to the form in fourth. Should he make the journey he may be joined from Japan by Tenno Sho winner Redentor. 🇯🇵 Japan dominating in Dubai Danon Decile powers to Sheema Classic success @RacingDubai #ダノンデサイル — Racing TV (@RacingTV) April 5, 2025 York's chief executive William Derby said: 'It's hugely exciting and I'm thrilled that we've got two entries from Japan. 'Obviously I saw him in Dubai when he won the Sheema Classic, he was devastating that night and he's among the top three (rated) turf horses in the world.' The 10-furlong Group One was again officially the best race in the world last year, when City Of Troy beat Calandagan, and while the winner is now at stud the runner-up could be back for Francis-Henri Graffard who has also entered his hugely exciting three-year-old Daryz. Field Of Gold for the sponsors, Ombudsman, Lead Artist, Detain and the unexposed Nahraan give John and Thady Gosden an enviable hand. Camille Pissarro, Henri Matisse, Los Angeles, Lambourn, Minnie Hauk and Whirl are part of Aidan O'Brien's squad. City Of Troy beat Calandagan in last year's Juddmonte International (Mike Egerton/PA) The 2000 Guineas winner Ruling Court, Almaqam and Anmaat, all entered for the Eclipse this weekend, are engaged. Derby went on: 'It's so exciting for our flagship race, that was rated the Longines best race in the world last year, to have such a potential field. 'We hope success breeds success and with prize-money of £1.25million it's put us on a global stage. 'With Field Of Gold and many others in there it looks like the best turf middle-distance horses in the world could be heading our way, at this early stage, admittedly. 'It was great to see Calandagan finally get his Group One at the weekend having run a blinder behind City Of Troy last year, he could be back again, but his stablemate has been mentioned for the race and he looks very exciting.' All the major races at the Ebor meeting have closed for entries, including a new Group One in the Pattern, the Sky Bet City of York Stakes. 'I'm delighted to see such a strong entry for that,' said Derby. 'There's Lazzat, Inisherin, Quinault, who won on Saturday, and one horse who did catch my eye was The Lion in Winter who would be dropping back in trip. 'The Nunthorpe looks as good as ever and it was so nice to see Jim Goldie and Paul Mulrennan win at Royal Ascot with American Affair. Having won a handicap at our Dante meeting just in May, it would be some story if he can win the Nunthorpe a few months later. 'The Yorkshire Oaks has all the fillies you would expect like Aidan's Minnie Hauk and Whirl among the three-year-olds and then there's David O'Meara's Estrange who looked exciting at Haydock. 'It's that time when you play fantasy racing. I know they won't all turn up, but we're excited about the prospect of some of them turning up.'
