
Brewery in Mie taps gluten-free, rice-based imitation beer

KUWANA, Mie Prefecture—A brewery here has produced a gluten-free imitation beer brewed exclusively from rice and containing no major allergens or animal-derived ingredients.
Oryvia was developed by brewery Rice Hack, led by President Yasuo Michiguchi, 35, under the concept of a 'beer for all.'
Michiguchi spent nine years creating Oryvia.
Supported by Nobuo Nozaki, 48, a director at Rice Hack and president of Nagoya-based confectionery maker Nozaki Seika, Michiguchi refined his brewing skills through training at a winery and a beer brewery in Australia as well as a sake maker in Fukui Prefecture.
By March this year, Michiguchi had obtained all the needed licenses and permits for liquor sales, alcoholic drink production and related business activities.
Michiguchi's goal was to make an easy-to-drink beverage for any consumer.
With rice as its main ingredient, Oryvia avoids the harsh taste of malt and appeals to drinkers who do not like beer's bitterness.
Oryvia also eliminates gluten from barley and wheat as well as 28 specified allergenic food items or animal-derived materials from its ingredient list.
It is safe to drink for people with gluten sensitivity, allergies and a vegan preference, Michiguchi said.
He came up with the idea amid an overall decline in rice consumption in Japan, which now faces a shortage of the staple.
'The prolonged rice shortage this time has stemmed, at least in part, from farmers' unwillingness to grow the crop due to insufficient consumption in recent years,' he said. 'I wanted to address the issue by using rice as the material for our brew.'
Michiguchi is also looking to take advantage of defatted rice bran from the production process of rice oil--a local specialty in Kuwana--along with broken grains that cannot be sold in the market.
He thereby hopes to reduce food waste, too.
The name Oryvia was inspired by 'oryza,' Latin for 'rice,' and the English word 'beer.'
Five varieties in the Oryvia line are expected to be released this year. The first will be Miyabi, priced at 770 yen ($5.40) after tax, which is scheduled to be released by the end of May.
Miyabi boasts a classic hop-flavored taste, with a flavor so close to genuine beer that one would not notice it is made with rice, Rice Hack said.
The refreshing So bottle and Rin, characterized by a clear aroma, will hit the market around summer, the company said. The sake-like Nagomi and the rich-flavored Jun are expected in autumn and winter, respectively.
They all fall under the 'happoshu' imitation beer category under the liquor tax law.
Rice Hack's brewing facility in the Nagashimacho district of Kuwana has a weekly production capacity of 500 liters. The company is considering increasing output at some point.
'The market for gluten-free products is growing the world over, including increased demand for gluten-free beer,' Michiguchi said. 'Few brewers produce gluten-free beer in Japan now, which means the emerging market holds great potential for growth.'

Share houses thrive offering affordability, modern twists

When Masaya Kobayashi moved to Tokyo after graduating from a college in Kanazawa, he thought about renting an apartment at first. But he discovered that the monthly rent alone would cost around 100,000 yen ($685) along with an additional 300,000 to 500,000 yen in initial expenses. So, Kobayashi, 24, moved into a share house where he lives with other tenants who share common spaces such as a kitchen and living room. 'This place offers me an opportunity for international communications and English learning,' he said. The share house market is expanding in Japan amid rising rents for urban dwellings. The style of multiple people living in a single rental property is gaining popularity even among foreign visitors. Travelers increasingly prefer staying in share houses to conventional hotels, as these accommodations' room charges are rapidly rising. Against this backdrop, modern versions of share houses are steadily emerging to change their traditional image as 'cramped and dirty.' AFFORDABLE, RICH IN EXPERIENCES Kobayashi's co-living complex is a five-minute walk from JR Asakusabashi Station in Tokyo's Taito Ward. The second to fourth floors of the former hotel building were converted into residential spaces in fall 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Eighteen men and women from Japan and abroad are currently spending time together at the establishment. The residents are all in their 20s and 30s. Rents start from 86,000 yen, inclusive of utility expenses. The restroom, shower facilities and kitchen are communal, while the share house alike features private rooms with locks that range from about 4.5 to 7 tatami mats in size. Aspiring residents are required to show their 'willingness to interact with others.' The operator of the shared home stated that it maintains a 1:1 ratio of males to females and Japanese to foreigners. The common living room is furnished with a dining table and a sofa, providing a space for 'takoyaki' octopus dumpling parties and other almost weekly recreational events. Animated conversations in Japanese and English are always exchanged there. CONSTANT RISE IN URBAN RENTS Among the advantages of shared homes are cheaper rents compared with apartments and other such housing facilities. Figures from real estate information provider At Home Co. show the rent for a single-person property of 30 square meters or less in Tokyo's 23 wards averaged 99,083 yen as of March. The rental fee hit a record high for 10 consecutive months. Rents were increased by at least 3 percent year on year in such areas as Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama, Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe and Fukuoka, too. 'Demand for rental properties once declined in the COVID-19 outbreak but has since recovered in earnest,' said an At Home representative. 'Ballooning construction and labor costs have additionally exerted a significant impact, so a sustained uptick in rents is expected from this point forward as well.' Due to the continuous rise in rents in metropolitan areas, shared housing complexes are seeing a surge in demand. A survey by the Japan Shared House Organization found that there were 6,123 such accommodations in 2024 nationwide, up 5.4 percent from the previous year. The number climbed for the third straight year, with there being 2.2 times more share houses than a decade ago. Buoyed by a rise in the number of unoccupied buildings throughout Japan, increasing inquiries are coming from owners who want to turn properties into shared houses. Borderless House Corp., which runs a total of 59 share houses mainly in Tokyo alongside Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe and Sendai, stated that these establishments' average occupancy rate was 90.5 percent in 2024. 'Our share houses are instantly filled as soon as they are put in place' in central Tokyo in particular, explained a Borderless House official. Taking account of the expansion in inbound demand, shared residence operators similarly roll out the red carpet for the growing number of foreign tourists who want to stay in Japan for a month or longer. Share houses specifically enjoy a good reputation among sightseers via their affordable prices compared to the rising hotel rates. The chance to casually experience Japanese culture through interactions with other residents also adds to the appeal of shared houses. Hidamari, which is responsible for 85 shared residential facilities mainly in the metropolitan area around the capital, said that the ratio of non-Japanese residents has lately jumped to 60 percent. The unique amenities make Tomore Shinagawa Nakanobu something between an old-style share house and a rental apartment for single people. Amid the rise of shared homes, a challenge remains: the growing number of reports about conflicts between residents. According to the accounts of the Japan Shared House Organization, trouble often arises over the cleaning of common areas in recent cases. Other frequent sources of problems, for example, include noise and the use of communal spaces in daily life. 'We recommend that prospective residents should check the operator's countermeasures for cleanliness and other issues, as well as the rents,' noted Taku Nakahara, a public relations officer for the organization and a director of Hidamari.

Japanese Cattle Rancher in Hokkaido Commercializes Frozen Milk, Plans to Export to Other Asian Countries

A cattle ranch has commercialized 'frozen milk' in Hokkaido, the kingdom of Japan's dairy products, and is expanding its sales channels. Though freezing milk typically makes for an unpleasant taste once thawed, making use of flash-freezing technology has been a game-changer. Freshness and flavor are not lost even after thawing, and the expiration date can be extended to about half a year compared to the one to two weeks when refrigerated. The cattle ranch plans to export the product to other Asian countries. 'Trustworthiness and branding power of 'made in Hokkaido' products are great. I believe there is demand from high-income consumers,' said Toshifumi Suzuki, 43, who keeps about 90 dairy cows in Hiroo, Hokkaido. The town is in the Tokachi area, where dairy farms are prosperous. Suzuki Farm, where he works, was established by his great-grandfather. When he began working there, the cows were fed enriched feeds made mainly with corn and artificial supplements. However, the cows repeatedly contracted infectious diseases. In 2010, he changed the ranch's feeding, believing the cows would be healthier if they were raised in an environment closer to nature. Once switching exclusively to organic grass, the cows became ill less often and the taste of their milk improved drastically. In summer last year, he was hit with the idea of commercializing frozen milk upon learning about machines that freeze meat and fish extremely quickly to preserve freshness. The machines are developed by Technican Co., a Yokohama-based freezer manufacturer. The process involves immersing food containers in a liquid at minus 30 C, freezing it instantly without causing cell breakdown. Surely, Suzuki thought, the same process serving to preserve the freshness of food could be applied to milk? Usually, thawing milk causes proteins and fats to separate, giving it a rough texture. Therefore, the Tokyo-based Japan Dairy Industry Association does not recommend freezing milk. However, when Suzuki experimented using the quick-freezing method, it was confirmed that freshness and flavor were not lost even after thawing. After an evaluation by a third-party inspection body, Suzuki began selling frozen milk with a six-month expiration period in summer last year. A 180-milliliter bottle of the frozen milk is priced at ¥700, including tax. As it can be enjoyed without worrying about best-by dates, the milk is popular as a thank-you gift under the furusato nozei hometown tax donation system, in which people donate money to local governments of their choice in return for income tax deductions. Also, since it is unlikely that leftover milk will need to be disposed, some customers buy the frozen milk for dairy product events. Suzuki Farm plans to begin exporting to Singapore and Thailand in autumn. 'I want people all over the world to know the true taste of milk beyond the barrier of best-by dates,' Suzuki said. Another cattle ranch in the area sells flash-frozen milk from cows raised exclusively on pasture grass, of which a 180-milliliter bottle is priced at ¥540, including tax. Miyaji Bokujo ranch in Shimizu, Hokkaido, has shipped its frozen milk to a milk shop in New Chitose Airport and a Fukuoka supermarket.

Japan brokerages donating shareholder perks to help kids in poverty
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japanese securities firms are donating the food and beverage gifts they receive as shareholder perks through their trading activities to nonprofit organizations to support children living in poverty amid inflation. The Japan Securities Dealers Association started the program in 2020, and around 2,300 donations had been made by March this year. Under the program, a list of shareholder perks is presented to registered organizations channeling the goods to recipients each week and the organizations then convey their requests to the securities firms. As of April, 61 companies and 48 organizations had registered with the program. Around 11 tons of rice and 8,600 liters of beverages have been donated, with rice and ready-made foods such as curry among the popular products. IwaiCosmo Securities Co. previously distributed shareholder perks to younger employees via a lottery as part of its welfare program, but now donates rice and canned goods to organizations. The Osaka-based brokerage has received feedback that its donations were delivered to single-mother households and served at a gathering of children. "We feel it is significant that goods are being used by people who really need them," a company official said. Monex Inc. has been donating shareholder perks to various organizations across the country since 2024, with an official saying it intends to continue using the program as it is difficult to find recipients on its own. NPO Bridge for Smile, which supports children and young people who cannot rely on their parents, receives donations of food and disaster stockpiles on a regular basis through the program. "As there are some people who only have one meal a day due to soaring rice prices, we are grateful that it helps them survive," said Ryuta Suzuki, a member of the group.
