A screenshot shared online in late May 2025 authentically showed a Truth Social post by U.S. President Donald Trump wishing a happy Memorial Day to "the scum that spent the last four years trying to destroy our country."

Following Memorial Day, a federal holiday honoring service members who have died while serving in the U.S. armed forces, a screenshot (archived) circulated online that appeared to show a Truth Social post by President Donald Trump in which he wrote an all-caps message wishing a happy Memorial Day to, among others, "the scum that spent the last four years trying to destroy our country."
The screenshot also appeared on Facebook (archived), Bluesky (archived), Reddit (archived) and TikTok (archived), while similar claims were posted on Threads (archived) and Instagram (archived). Snopes readers also emailed to ask whether the image showed an authentic post.
In short, the message was posted on Trump's Truth Social profile (archived) and was still live at the time of this writing. Therefore, we have rated this claim as true.

Some social media users criticized the president for failing to directly pay respect to fallen soldiers in his message.
However, Trump did memorialize the nation's fallen soldiers at a later address at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
Snopes has addressed numerous claims relating to Memorial Day in the past, including a rumor that the federal holiday was created by former slaves to honor dead Union soldiers who fought in the American Civil War.

Opelousas Museum launches Neighborhoods Project
OPELOUSAS, La. () — Historic preservation has always been a priority as Opelousas continues to evolve. Now, Patrice Melnick with the is continuing that mission with the Where We Live: Opelousas Neighborhoods Project. 'The main idea of the project is to highlight the neighborhoods, and they have names like the Brickyard and the Oil Mill and Garland, and they're commonly known, but they don't appear on maps. So, we want to raise the profiles of the neighborhoods especially the profiles of the people who lived there,' Melnick said in an interview with News 10. The way the museum plans to accomplish that goal is by having residents take pictures in their neighborhoods along with written stories about their memories. Southern Tier resident seeks answers in Chautauqua County cold case
CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY, N.Y. (WIVB) — Questions are being raised about the possibility of an accused murderer being responsible a cold case from 1978 that took place in Chautauqua County. There are over 20 unsolved cases in Chautauqua County involving women who have gone missing or were murdered. 'There's a lot of work to be done, a lot of files to be read,' said Chautauqua County Sheriff Jim Quattrone. 'It's slower than we would like it to be, but it is important for us to give the loved ones of these victims — offer them some hope, not giving them false hope, but let them know that they're not forgotten and that we're seeking justice.' Southern Tier resident DJ Abram is making it his mission to figure out what happened in one of those cases that occurred almost 50 years ago. Abram helps run the Facebook page 'Who Killed Beth Ann Patterson Brown?' Brown was murdered in 1978 in Brocton, N.Y., after leaving a popular town bar. Abram said the community deserves answers, not only for this cold case, but for the other cases in the county. 'There's somebody walking around who's responsible for this and it's heartbreaking for the families,' he said. Police have not confirmed to WIVB News 4 if they're looking into whether accused killer Richard Fox has any connection to Brown's case. Abram said Fox did grow up in the area where Brown's murder happened. Fox is accused of murdering two Buffalo women whose bodies were found in 2021 near the Chautauqua County Rails to Trails bike path. He's also a person of interest in a case in Niagara Falls, where police discovered human remains in a basement in the Falls. 'He was around 14, 15 at the time. Being that this happened in the middle of the night, being near a bar, I can't imagine a 14, 15-year-old would be hanging around a bar,' Abram said. 'It was a very brutal murder. Is it possible? It certainly is possible, but it doesn't seem likely in my mind.' Last year, Congressman Nick Langworthy helped secure $100,000 in federal funding to help Chautauqua County crack these cold cases. 'I was honored to secure $100,000 for the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office as part of last year's appropriations process to support their Abducted, Missing, Murdered, and Unidentified Women's Initiative,' Langworthy said. 'This funding is about more than numbers — it's about justice, remembrance, and action. We owe it to the women who have vanished, to those whose lives were stolen, and to their families, to ensure their stories are not forgotten, their cases are fully investigated, and that every effort is made to deliver the answers and accountability they deserve. I salute Sheriff Quattrone for his vision in opening a cold case effort to bring just to these families and victims.' Student Loans: Ed Dept pauses plan to garnish Social Security checks
(NewsNation) — The Trump administration has paused a plan to garnish the Social Security checks of those who have defaulted on their student loans, an Education Department official told NewsNation on Monday. 'The Department has not offset any social security benefits since restarting collections on May 5, and has put a pause on any future social security offsets,' Ellen Keast, a department spokeswoman, said in a statement to NewsNation. The announcement will come as welcome news to hundreds of thousands of older Americans with defaulted student loans, after the Education Department warned in May that federal benefits would be subject to offset as soon as this month. Social Security plans to add AI to phone systems: Reports In May, the Education Department resumed involuntary collections on defaulted federal student loans for the first time since March 2020. As part of that process, hundreds of thousands of older borrowers were expected to be at risk of having their Social Security checks garnished. But on Monday, Keast said Social Security offsets have been paused, and that the Trump administration is 'committed to protecting social security recipients.' 'In the coming weeks, the Department will begin proactive outreach to recipients about affordable loan repayment options and help them back into good standing,' Keast said. This year, an estimated 452,000 people aged 62 and older had student loans in default and were likely to experience the renewed forced collections, according to a January report from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Social Security increase missing? Here's what to do The Education Department did not say whether the garnishment pause applied only to Social Security benefits or also to other federal benefits. NewsNation has asked for clarification. The Social Security Administration (SSA) did not respond to NewsNation's request for comment. When the Education Department initially announced the restart of involuntary collections, it warned that the Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA) would begin administrative wage garnishment 'later this summer' after sending required notices. Last month, a federal judge blocked the Trump administration's plan to move the $1.6 trillion student loan portfolio to the Small Business Administration, keeping the Education Department in charge of managing those loans, CNBC reported.
