L.A. is rolling out 3,000 bus shelters to help protect riders from extreme heat
Temperatures in Los Angeles continue to rise—the number of annual extreme heat days has tripled over the past century, and average summer temperatures have increased more than one degree Fahrenheit in the past 20 years.
To provide some relief from the sun, StreetsLA is deploying 3,000 bus shelters across some of the highest-ridership areas in L.A. Some of the city's most vulnerable communities live in these neighborhoods and yet green space with natural shade is scarce. Since the shelters started being rolled out, an average of 63,800 riders are seeing the benefits every weekday.
'It became a very human-centric effort of understanding who the transit riders are and understanding their needs,' says Carlos Madrid III, senior associate principal at SOM LA studio, the architecture firm that designed the project.
Inspired by California modernism architecture, the shelters are simple and functional, with clean lines and a clear indoor-outdoor connection.

Flooding possible as storms return to North Texas on Wednesday
More rain and thunderstorms are on the way to North Texas on Wednesday. First Alert Weather Days are in effect for the threat of more heavy rain leading to flooding concerns Wednesday and Thursday. The Wednesday morning commute will be a wet one – rain will move north towards the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex around 7 a.m. Widespread severe weather isn't likely. Showers will linger around lunchtime. The evening commute will be dry before another round of rain arrives around 8 p.m. In fact, over the next several days, a forecasted 1 to 5 inches of rain accumulation will be possible. This has prompted the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center to issue a slight risk, level 2 out of 4, for the risk of excessive rainfall for both Wednesday and Thursday. The Storm Prediction Center highlighted the area of concern to the southeast of the metroplex. Hail one inch in diameter and wind gusts of 60 mph will be the primary threat, while the tornado threat is low. A flood watch is in effect now until Thursday evening for parts of North Texas, including Tarrant, Dallas, Parker and Rockwall counties. Wise, Denton, Collin and Red River counties aren't included in the watch. Please remember "Turn Around, Don't Drown." Do not try to drive through water-covered roadways, as it is very hard to estimate how deep the water is, and you could put yourself in a life-threatening situation. The slow-moving upper-level low-pressure system that has been creating the active weather pattern will shift to the east this weekend. This will allow conditions to clear, just in time for Father's Day.

Besides the smoke, today looks to be the pick of the week as we will be in the Goldilocks zone. I think for most, temperatures won't be too hot or too cold. They'll be just right. This means it will feel fantastic when you're outside. Conditions in Pittsburgh on June 11, 2025 KDKA Weather Center Morning temperatures were in the 50s this morning, and it may be a while before we see temperatures this cool again. Noon temperatures will be in the mid-70s. While your next good chance to see rain comes on Saturday, I actually bring back a small isolated rain chance on Thursday and another isolated rain chance on Friday. Most will be completely dry on Thursday, and the Friday rain chance comes after sunset. Saturday's rain and storm chance looks to arrive in the early afternoon and will stick around for the rest of the day. Our setup with a broad area of low pressure moving our way from the western Gulf and merging with a Canadian cool front could bring significant rain our way. This was the first tornado in Clarion County since 2017 and only the county's 15th confirmed tornado ever. The biggest weather story today is probably the presence of Canadian smoke as a thick smoke plume continues to track to the east. This morning, the plume with be the thickest with things improving for the afternoon and evening hours. Wildfire smoke in our area as of Wednesday morning KDKA Weather Center Smoke is expected to remain well above the surface, so air quality is unlikely to be significantly impacted.
