Administrator of major dark web cybercrime forum arrested in Ukraine

France 2423-07-2025
A suspected administrator of a top Russian-language cybercrime forum, XSS.is, has been arrested in Ukraine with the help of French police and Europol, French prosecutors said on Wednesday.
Industry experts describe XSS.is as one of the longest-running dark web forums.
"On Tuesday July 22, a person suspected of being the administrator of the Russian-language cybercrime forum XSS.is was arrested as part of a criminal investigation opened by the Paris public prosecutor's office," Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said in a statement.
"Active since 2013, this forum was one of the main hubs for global cybercrime," Beccuau said, adding that XSS.is enabled the sale of malware, access to compromised systems, stolen data, and ransomware-related services.
"The forum also operated an encrypted Jabber messaging server, facilitating anonymous exchanges between cybercriminals," the statement added.
An investigation was launched in July 2021 and was handed over to investigating magistrates in November of the same year.
"A judicial investigation was opened on November 9, 2021 on charges of complicity in attacks on an automated data processing system, organised extortion, and criminal conspiracy," Beccuau said.
"The intercepted messages revealed numerous illicit activities related to cybercrime and ransomware, and established that they generated at least $7 million in profits," Beccuau added.
The suspected forum administrator was arrested by Ukrainian authorities with the help of the French police in charge of the investigation and Europol.
French and European authorities are stepping up cooperation on arrests linked to cybercrime, while reports of cyberattacks targeting public entities and private groups are mounting.

Under the Shadow of Drones: Life in Sumy, Ukraine, Amid Fear of Bombing and Occupation

Réservé aux abonnés The 250,000 residents of Sumy, the Ukrainian town near the Russian border, are caught between intensifying drone attacks and the front line – now only 20 kilometers away, following the Ukrainian retreat from the Kursk region. Located in northern Ukraine, the road from Sumy to Bilopillia undulates between fields of golden wheat under a brilliant blue sky, a vivid picture of the Ukrainian flag. But the closer you get to the Russian border, the rarer the crops become. 'From now on, it's the drones that control the area,' says the mayor, Yuri Zarko, at the wheel of his SUV. Caution dictates that you drive at over 100 km/h, despite the potholes, to attempt to evade the Russian FPV drones — the immersion-piloted machines that strike the region relentlessly. A monument reminds us how dangerous the area is: a month earlier, two soldiers perished when their car was blown up by a kamikaze drone. Suddenly, the mayor's car enters a makeshift tunnel: for dozens of kilometers, white nets — 'originally for harvesting cucumbers,' he says with a smile — protect the road. If the rigged machines try to attack or drop an explosive, they get stuck in the nets. After 14 years as the head of the community of communes bordering Russia…

France arrests man who lit cigarette from Unknown Soldier memorial flame

A man who lit a cigarette from a memorial flame at a major Paris war monument was arrested on Tuesday, the interior minister said, calling his actions "indecent and pathetic". "The man who desecrated the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by lighting a cigarette with the memorial flame was arrested in Paris for violating a burial site, tomb, urn, or monument erected in memory of the dead. He was taken into custody and admitted the facts," Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau wrote on X. The video of a man stooping and lighting up from the fire at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier under the Arc de Triomphe, before walking calmly away watched by tourists, caused indignation when it was widely shared on social media. The alleged infraction took place on Monday evening and the man was arrested on Tuesday afternoon, police told AFP. "You cannot ridicule French remembrance and get away with it," Patricia Miralles, minister for veterans and remembrance, wrote on X. The tomb, under the giant arch at the top of the iconic Champs Elysees avenue, contains the remains of a soldier killed in the First World War, laid there as a tribute to France 's dead. "This flame does not light a cigarette, it burns for the sacrifice of millions of our soldiers," said Miralles. "This is an insult to our dead, to our history and to our nation." AFP was not able to determine the origin of the video. Le Figaro newspaper reported that it was filmed by a Latvian tourist on the evening of August 4 and first posted on TikTok. The tourist told Figaro that the man did not appear drunk and seemed to be well aware of what he was doing.

Kyiv buries soldier's wife and daughters killed in Russian attack

Residents held each other and wept as they bid a final farewell to their neighbours, who died at dawn on Friday, when a barrage of Russian drones and missiles pounded the Ukrainian capital for hours. Across a leafy park next to the school, flowers, toys, and portraits of those killed were laid beneath the remains of a nine-storey residential building gutted in the attack, which killed at least 31 people. "It is difficult to imagine the grief of our brother, who lost two little daughters and his beloved wife in an instant," said the military unit of Igor Gumeniuk, the serviceman whose family was buried. Local media reported that Irina and her children Anastassia, 13, and Alina, 10, had fled the fighting in the eastern Donetsk region -- where Russia has concentrated its firepower -- before settling in Kyiv. "Alina and Nastya were sincere, kind and bright girls. We will remember their smiles, their kind hearts, their desire to live and learn," the girls' school that held the ceremony wrote on Facebook. One of Irina's final social media posts from last month showed the family meeting in eastern Ukraine with Igor, an active serviceman. "We were happy together all day for the first time in eight months," she wrote on Facebook, alongside pictures of the family relaxing by a river. Russia has stepped up its long-range drone and missile attacks on Ukraine over recent months as US-led efforts to end the more than three-year invasion appear to stall. Thirty-nine-year-old doctor Roman Moskalenko, whose body was found beneath the rubble in Kyiv, also received a farewell from his fellow medics. "His colleagues remember him as attentive, caring, and professional," Kyiv's Vechirniy media outlet reported.
