Harvey woman faces long road ahead after tree falls on home

HARVEY, La. (WGNO) — It was a rainy morning as 88-year-old Joyce Robillard, and her son, Marvin, left the house around 6 a.m. to run some errands.
When they returned home, they found that the large tree in their backyard had split in half and crashed into their house.
'When I looked up at the roof and I didn't see a tree, I said 'Oh my god, the tree has fallen.' I didn't know what to expect to see when I came in,' Robillard said.

The tree caused severe internal damages to the home as well, destroying decorations and furniture.
Also, due to the holes in the roof, rainwater was able to get into the house, causing water damage.
'Water was running everywhere in the kitchen. My neighbor came in next door, and he tried to put the tarp up, but he couldn't get behind there because there is so much stuff that had fallen down,' Robillard said.
While the damage is severe, Robillard says she's thankful her glass backdoor didn't shatter.
She says if that had happened, the damage could have been far worse.

'Oh, I'm very happy. I wouldn't have come in. I would've been too afraid to come in,' Robillard said.
Robillard says now she'll be forced to move out for the time being until the damage is repaired.
Thankfully, she already has a team helping with the recovery.
'We want to try to cut the tree get the weight off the house. That's the most important thing, get this weight off and then I'll get with some of the members to see if we can access with brother Troy to secure this wall. This is the most important thing to get the weight off the house right now,' Westbank Combined Male Chorus President Timothy Kennedy said.
A GoFundMe account has been set up in Robillard's honor.Trump announces trade agreement with UK

Erin becomes first hurricane in the Atlantic this season

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Erin has become the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic Season. Sustained winds are now at 75 mph. This puts the storm at Category 1 strength. Its current movement is to the WNW at 18 mph. Further strengthening is forecasted to occur over the weekend. By Sunday, Erin will likely become a major Category 3 hurricane. Potentially a Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 140 mph by Monday. Thankfully, impacts to the U.S. are not anticipated. Most weather models are taking this storm back out into the Atlantic basin next week, away from the east coast. Heavy rainfall is expected along the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico through Sunday. Tropical storm force winds may also be seen in these locations. Next week, rip currents are likely along the U.S. Atlantic Posts Hot Saturday with afternoon storms ICE officers, impersonators accused of abusing women More than 30K wireless power banks recalled over fire, explosion risk Border Report Live: Coast Guard joins border mission from air, land and sea 3 babies have died of congenital syphilis in New York: What is it? Heat Advisory returns plus an Extreme Heat Warning starts off the new week!

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – As if Sunday wasn't hot enough, gear up for a toasty start to the new week. Sunday's Heat Advisory ended at 8 p.m. leading to a brief 'cool down' through the overnight, But it'll warm up pretty fast early on come Monday eventually getting up to 96-degrees with mostly sunny skies and a few scattered showers in the forecast. Another Heat Advisory will be in effect for your Monday starting at 10 a.m. and running until 8 p.m. There will also be an Extreme Heat Warning in effect starting at 10 a.m. through 8 p.m. on Monday for the following areas: St. James, St. John The Baptist, St. Charles, St. Bernard, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Jefferson, and Plaquemines parishes in addition to Harrison, Hancock and Jackson counties. When you put the forecasted temperatures together with the expected 'very humid' conditions, we will surely have Heat Index values nearing or even surpassing the 110-mark. I may sound like a broken record at this point because I can't stress the importance of heat safety and the following simple tips: (a) stay hydrated, (b) limit your time outdoors especially during the peak hours of the day and (c) check-in on family and friends who don't particularly do well in the dangerous heat. With what's currently expected for Tuesday in terms of the temperature and level of humidity, there's a pretty good chance that we could see another Heat Advisory for that day as well. Then getting back to rain chances, Sunday night will be pretty quiet: Then giving an overview for the rest of the week in terms of showers and storms, we will see greater chances every day after Wednesday — and these are also the days where we could see some relief temperature wise too!Latest Posts New technology helping to crack down on illegal dumping in New Orleans WATCH: LSU HC Brian Kelly recaps Day 1 of fall camp Trump goes off on Josh Hawley over insider trading bill Democrats ramp up pressure on Trump, GOP over Epstein files with arcane gambit Man arrested in connection with fatal New Orleans hit-and-run Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
