China says Wells Fargo banker under exit ban is involved in a criminal case

Al Arabiya21-07-2025
China's foreign ministry said on Monday that Chenyue Mao, the Wells Fargo banker who has been blocked from leaving the country, was involved in a criminal case and obliged to cooperate with the investigation.
Chinese law enforcement authorities have restricted Mao's exit in accordance with the law, Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for the ministry, told a regular press briefing.
The US bank had suspended all travel to China after Mao's exit ban, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters last week.
The case was being investigated and Mao was obliged to cooperate with the investigation, Guo said, without elaborating on the case or how the banker was involved.
'Everyone in China, whether they are Chinese or foreigners, must abide by Chinese laws,' Guo said, adding that China will protect their legitimate rights and interests in investigations.
Mao, who was born in Shanghai and based in Atlanta, currently serves as a managing director at Wells Fargo, specializing in the international factoring business.

Trump says he is not seeking summit with Xi, but may visit China

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he was not seeking a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, but added that he may visit China at Xi's invitation, which Trump said had been extended. 'I may go to China, but it would only be at the invitation of President Xi, which has been extended. Otherwise, no interest!,' Trump said on Truth Social. Aides to Trump and Xi have discussed a potential meeting between the leaders during a trip by the US president to Asia later this year, sources previously said. A trip would be the first face-to-face encounter between the men since Trump's second term in office, at a time when trade and security tensions between the two superpower rivals remain elevated. While plans for a meeting have not been finalized, discussions on both sides of the Pacific have included a possible Trump stopover around the time of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in South Korea or talks on the sidelines of the October 30-November 1 event, the people said. The third round of US-China trade talks taking place in Stockholm this week may lay the groundwork ahead of a leaders' summit in the autumn, analysts say. A new flare-up of tariffs and export controls would likely impact any plans for a meeting with Xi.

Police search for suspect in deaths of couple attacked while walking with daughters at Arkansas park

Police in Arkansas were searching on Sunday for a suspect in the deaths of a couple who investigators said were attacked while on a wooded walking trail with their two young daughters. Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41, were found dead Saturday at Devils Den State Park in Washington County in a suspected homicide, Arkansas State Police said. Their daughters, who are 7 and 9, were not hurt and are being cared for by family members. Officials described the suspect as a white male wearing dark shorts, a dark ballcap, sunglasses, and fingerless gloves. He was seen driving toward a park exit in a black four-door sedan with a license plate partly covered by tape. The car, possibly a Mazda, may have been traveling on State Highway 170 or State Highway 220 near the park in a rural, wooded area with limited cellphone service, police said. Shea Lewis, secretary of the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage, and Tourism, said that rangers had stepped up patrols at Devils Den. 'Our hearts are with the victims' loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,' Lewis said in a statement Sunday. 'The safety of our visitors and staff is our highest priority, and we are working closely with Arkansas State Police and various law enforcement officials as the investigation continues.' Investigators asked potential witnesses to review their photos and videos from the park south of Fayetteville. There was no information about a possible motive. Officials said the victims had recently moved to Prairie Grove, Arkansas, from another state. Their bodies were taken to the state crime lab, where the manner and cause of death will be determined.
