Thai-language comedy-fantasy A Useful Ghost has won the top prize of the Grand Prix in Critics' Week, an independent sidebar of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.
Directed by Thai film-maker Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke making his feature debut, it follows March (played by Thai actor Witsarut Himmarat), who is grieving the death of his wife Nat (Thai actress Davika Hoorne). After her reincarnation as a vacuum cleaner, they rekindle their relationship.
The film is produced by companies from Thailand, France and Germany. Singapore-based Momo Film Co is also a co-producer, with support from the Infocomm Media Development Authority's (IMDA) Singapore Film Commission (SFC).
The Cannes Film Festival, held in France, opened on May 13 and will end May 24.
Ms Tan Si En, founder and producer at Momo Film Co, says her team is deeply honoured by the recognition A Useful Ghost has received at Cannes' Critics' Week.
'This award is a celebration of the creative synergy between Singapore and our international partners. It shows the power that South-east Asian stories have to resonate globally. Our mission has always been to champion new voices and perspectives from the region, and this win affirms our collaborative approach,' she says in a press statement.
In 2023, Malay-language horror film Tiger Stripes (2023), the debut effort by Malaysian director Amanda Nell Eu, won the Grand Prix at Cannes' Critics' Week, marking the first time that a film from South-east Asia had won the prize.
Tiger Stripes is co-produced by firms from Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan and Singapore. Singapore-based Akanga Film Asia co-produced it, with support from the SFC.
Other made-with-Singapore projects at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival include the drama Renoir, directed by Japanese film-maker Chie Hayakawa and co-produced by Akanga Film Asia. The Japanese-language film will compete for the top festival prize of the Palme d'Or.
Before The Sea Forgets, a short film by Vietnamese film-maker Le Ngoc Duy, was also selected to screen at the independent sidebar event Directors' Fortnight. Singapore-based production houses 13 Little Pictures and WBSB Films are co-producers.

987FM DJ Germaine Tan and Zouk CEO Andrew Li have announced their engagement after romantic Maldives proposal

SINGAPORE: This past Sunday, June 1, came with some heartwarming news—987FM DJ Germaine Tan is engaged to her boyfriend of two and a half years, Andrew Li! As reported by CNA , Li, the CEO of Zouk Group, proposed in the most dreamy way possible: on a secluded sandbank during their romantic Maldives getaway. Photo: Instagram/Germaine Tan Before the trip, Tan revealed to CNA Lifestyle that she had her 'suspicions'. 'He mentioned he'd set up a photographer for us one day,' said Tan. 'That definitely got me thinking a proposal might be coming, since I'm usually the one pushing for photos!' He went all in As the sun began to set, casting beautiful golden colours across the ocean, Li got down on one knee and asked Tan to marry him. She shared that he then confessed, telling her he'd known all along that she was the one he was meant to marry. He poured his heart out to her, saying, 'The way you love me—so fiercely and wholeheartedly—it pushes me to be the best version of myself. You're everything I've ever dreamed of in a soulmate, a partner, and a wife. 'Say 'yes,' and I'll spend the rest of my life showing you just how happy I can make you.' Tan was so deeply moved by his words that she broke down in tears, completely overcome with emotion and was 'full-on bawling.' The couple actually first crossed paths on a random Thursday night at Here Kitty Kitty, a cocktail bar managed by Zouk Group. No clue who he was 'Honestly, I didn't think much of it that first night, but we had a blast dancing,' Tan recalled. 'He went all out with his boyband moves, trying to impress me. After that, he left a comment on my Instagram—and then slid into my DMs.' Tan confessed she had no clue who Andrew Li was when they first met. 'I went into it with no preconceived notions about him,' she said. 'He later admitted that the moment he saw me taking photos at the bar that first night, he thought I was the perfect mix of gorgeous and adorable—and that's what made him want to get to know me.' 'Li has truly helped me conquer so many challenges throughout our relationship,' Tan shared. He helped her heal 'He's truly pushed me to grow in ways I never thought possible, and he's even helped me heal from past traumas,' Tan shared. 'A year before we got engaged, he said, 'Our relationship is my top priority right now, and I'll do anything to make it work.'' And he really proved it. 'We're in the best possible place.' According to Tan, her father, who founded the supermarket chain Hao Mart, shares a great relationship with Li. 'My dad always makes sure to snag the seat next to Andrew at family gatherings,' Tan shared. 'That way, he can talk his ear off about business and the economy—you know, all the stuff no one else really wants to hear about.' Tan recalled a conversation with her dad where she'd asked if Andrew would need to get his blessing to marry her. Her dad's reply? 'No need! I approved him ages ago!' Her colleagues, including fellow Yes 933 DJ Hazelle Teo, and actresses He Ying Ying and Chantalle Ng, have all been sending in their congratulations. Right now, the couple is pouring their energy into planning a wedding that brings all their loved ones together to celebrate what matters most—love. As Tan lovingly shared, 'We're beyond excited to start this new chapter, build a life side by side, and one day grow our own little family.'

Actor Zhang Yaodong spotted serving diners at his Tampines zi char stall after staff resigns

Almost a year after his scandal, former Mediacorp actor Zhang Yaodong seems to be moving on pretty well. While the 47-year-old Malaysia-born actor never responded to allegations of him impregnating various women, he did reveal in November that he has two daughters, and deeply regrets not having been there for them throughout their childhood. In February, it was revealed that Zhang is no longer managed by Mediacorp's talent management arm The Celebrity Agency. So what has Zhang, who is nominated in the , been up to lately? The actor was recently spotted manning a seafood zi char (cooked dishes) stall in a Tampines Industrial Park coffee shop. A diner named Xia Tian De Yu Er on Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu, had noticed Zhang working the cash register and took to the platform to share about it. "The food stall I eat at every afternoon turned out to be run by him. I only saw him coming to help because his staff resigned," wrote the diner. They also remarked that Zhang, who helped to take orders and serve customers, "looked better in person" and praised him for being polite. It appears that the diner's post-scandal impression of Zhang had changed after meeting him in person. "Actually, it's very virtuous for one to admit their mistakes and correct them," the diner wrote. Netizens seem to agree too. Though there are still those who continue to condemn Zhang, many are now defending him and urging others to not rain on his parade. "There's nothing wrong with him making an honest living," wrote one netizen. This is in fact not Zhang's first F&B venture. He has a catering business and he and his friend Terence Cao once opened a roast meat stall in a food court but shuttered it after two years, causing Zhang to lose a six-figure sum. Zhang's parents, who were from a town named Selayang in Selangor, started out as hawkers before opening a coffee shop. The actor was said to have helped out there when he was young.
