
After the Bell: Purpose, paycheques and cold mornings
I would imagine that if, like me, you live on the Highveld, you are finding getting up in the mornings a little difficult at the moment.
The first clue hits me every morning. As I reach for my phone, there is a blast of cold air under the three blankets that I've been under all night. And there is nothing about my phone that is intrinsically worth it.
What I really want from it is to find out what happened overnight. How the world changed (and what happened in Washington…).
I realise that I'm a little addicted to news. And while this can be problematic (my wife gets suspicious if I look at my phone for more than two minutes), generally speaking it's an addiction I'm happy to live with.
This is because I know I am incredibly lucky. I wake up with purpose every morning. I see journalism as a sense of mission, as something that is important.
I was reminded a little bit of that while I was speaking to Johann Kotzé, the CEO of AgriSA, on The Money Show on Wednesday night.
He told the most wonderful story about how he still remembers walking behind the plough on his father's farm. He was just five years old. And the smell of the earth, the soil that his father picked up for him to touch, all of that is still with him.
No matter where he is in the world, the moment he smells rain he is reminded of that moment.
When the disinformation about farmers and land is flying, it must be really useful for him. It gives him a reason to keep going, to keep up the good fight as he sees it.
I've often been struck by the sense of mission, of passion, that people who work for NGOs have. They will put in hours and hours of really hard work, often unpaid, because they have a sense of purpose.
Companies try to harness this, of course. They try to give their workers a sense of mission.
I know we are all motivated by different things, but I think there are some things many of us have in common.
Many of us will perform for a team. No one wants to be the person who lets a team down. It goes back to the moment you were no longer the person picked last to play soccer against the other side.
And that sense of a team can involve thousands of people. It's why so many companies spend so much time and money on workshops and get-togethers, and strangely dangerous Christmas parties.
If you're Shoprite, you want to feel like a winner. If you're Pick n Pay, you want to feel like the contender. You could have class, you could be somebody. And you get those things by working with the rest of the team.
I do wonder if some teams are harder to motivate than others.
I mean, if you're leading a group of people in the online gambling space, I'd expect it to be tougher to motivate them than say a group of pediatric nurses.
That said, money works.
There are millions of people, probably the majority of our workers, who aren't lucky enough to have that purpose at work. Instead, their purpose is about money.
They are working to live. But more importantly, they are often working for other people to live.
Nothing can give you purpose like family. I know so many people who literally work every hour of the day just to give their children a slightly better chance in life.
If I were a boss interviewing for positions, I might well favour single parents just for this reason. You know that they are going to add value to your company and won't cause any trouble simply because they will rely on their salary so much.
And it is obvious that this is what motivates the online gambling crowd.
I do think that some people are able to make work fun though. I've been in a position where I look forward to arriving at the office because I know there will be commentary and gossip about the events of the day.
And if you can harness that, you really can get a lot of value out of people.
Most people, though, will rely on the money. It's easy, it's simple, you know how to assess what you are offering when compared to your competitors.
But money might only take you so far. People will work for it, but you have to pay for it.
What you really want is people who will give you a lot more value than you pay for, because they believe in the cause.
You need something to get them out of bed in the morning.

SA practising damaging politics of the zero-sum game
While there are many prisms through which you can attempt to understand our politics, one may be to examine whether people see the entire process as a zero-sum game. There may now be mounting evidence that more politicians and voters believe every single issue must be reduced to winners and losers. Anyone with much experience of life will be aware that, as a general rule, when life improves for one person, it often improves for another. This happens in an economy all the time. It is well known that one restaurant in one city block might be popular enough to bring in a certain number of customers. But a group of competing restaurants in the same place are much more likely to bring in a much bigger number. In other words, you are more likely to be successful through sharing space with other restaurants. Growing an economy might well rest on this. One cannot just make a product and sell it on your own. You need to be part of a chain that enables your market and ensures you have both suppliers to help you make your product, and customers to buy it. People who are thinking over the longer term will often make decisions that will cost them in the short run, because they expect to gain in the longer run. Last week, Moneyweb reported that some suppliers to Pick n Pay were actually giving it goods at lower than usual prices. While this costs them in the short run, they don't want a situation where Checkers becomes so dominant they only have one person to sell to. This means that they are helping someone to regain market share. In the case of South Africa, with its incredibly diverse constituencies, and defined by its inequality, the idea of people helping one another might well be more important than in many other places. Winners and losers The nature of our economy requires everyone to be working in the same direction. Instead, what we have is people simply fighting really hard not to be the losers, and others not the winners. Currently, 50 proposals to change the Labour Relations Act are going through Nedlac. While labour analyst Andrew Levy says it's not clear if they really change the balance between workers and managers, several groups and unions have already held a protest against the proposals. They believe that their members might soon lose out, and managers might win. This kind of situation happens all the time in our society. In our politics, the coalition sometimes appears to be reduced to fights between the ANC and the DA that are literally about ensuring one wins and the other loses. Because this is all happening in public, and they are representing constituencies, it can give the impression that those constituencies are really fighting to ensure they are not seen to lose. This transactional approach, and the damage it can cause, is wonderfully, and horrifically, illustrated by the Trump administration's approach to trade. One of the most important dynamics of the past 30 years has been the rise of China as a manufacturer of trade goods. It has made these goods at a cheaper price than many other places, and sold them. This has exported deflation around the world – the price of a cheap bicycle has declined dramatically in real terms since the 1980s. This is largely because companies in different countries have traded with each other. And both parties have become very rich doing so. Trump appears to believe that if one country is getting rich, the other must be losing out. The overwhelming evidence is that this is not the case. Instead, both parties win through these transactions. In some ways, such is the impact of the US, that this example might well be having an impact on our politics. At the same time, another important aspect of how life really works is being lost. In many cases, there is no clear 'winner' and clear 'loser'. Often it is entirely grey, with very little difference in shade. The NHI stand-off In our politics now, it seems that everything must become a life and death situation, that there will be armageddon if someone does not get what they want. Given our inequality, this can sometimes appear as if it is a life-and-death struggle between classes. The NHI might be a useful example: those who support it say the rich are trying to condemn the poor to death, those who oppose it say the rich will lose everything they have. Instead, this is something that should really be negotiated between representatives of constituencies. And there should be a solution that everyone can live with. There are many reasons why we are in this situation. Our racialised inequality must be an important reason. Those who are poor have everything to gain and nothing to lose, while those who are rich have everything to lose and nothing to gain. But this may also be the result of deliberate political strategy. Just as politicians have created abortion as a political issue in the US, by forcing people to take a position, so our leaders often do the same. Both the ANC and the DA benefit from continuing the fight around the NHI. They both get to demonstrate to their constituencies that they are fighting for them. And because the struggle for voters is now so difficult and so intense, the stakes rise each time, and so it is more likely that politicians will behave in this way. All of this feeds an artificial intensity in our politics.

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) reached a major milestone on Wednesday, with the FTSE/JSE All Share Index (ALSI) hitting 100,000 points, 1,000 times its starting level of 100 points in January 1960. Over the past 65 years, the ALSI has delivered annualised returns exceeding 11%, despite a very topsy-turvy economy, withstanding the global economic crisis in the mid-2000's, as well as the impacted on the Covid-19 pandemic. The FTSE/JSE All Share Index (ALSI) began its journey in 1960 at just 100 points. Over the decades, it has weathered global shocks and economic shifts and has been bolstered by commodity booms and resilient corporate earnings, steadily climbing to close at a historic 100,180… — JSE (@JSE_Group) July 23, 2025 Between 2020-2025, the index rebounded strongly from the lows of the pandemic, largely driven by commodity booms in gold and platinum, resilient corporate earnings and improved investor sentiment. Sibanye-Stillwater seals R1.45 billion deal to buy U.S-based Metallix
Confirmation coming through on Monday morning from Sibanye-Stillwater that it's acquired U.S-based Metallix for around R1.45 billion. Sibanye-Stillwater, one of the world's largest platinum producers explained that the acquisition will complement its existing US recycling operations. Metallix produces recycled precious metals, including gold, silver and platinum group metals from industrial wasre streams in North Carolina. Speaking to Stephen Grootes on The Money Show, Peter Major, director of mining at Modern Corporate Solutions says the move aims to boost Sibanye-Stillwater's U.S recycling operations by adding a long-established precious metals recycler to its portfolio.
