This symbolic gesture marked the end of centuries of Butler family stewardship of the castle, a lineage that traced back to the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland. The onlookers included then Minister for Finance Charlie Haughey and, surprisingly, Mick Jagger and Marianne Faithfull, who were seeking refuge from the British press following a recent drug scandal.

Rock 'n' roll luminaries aside, the event signified the closing chapter of one of Ireland's most prominent Anglo-Norman dynasties. Arthur Butler was descended from Theobald Walter, the first Chief Butler of Ireland (c. 1150- c. 1206). The Butlers were among many families whose roots in Ireland began with the 12th century Anglo-Norman invasion. Over the following eight centuries, these families brought a new form of governance, feudalism, to Ireland and became deeply embedded in Irish political, social, and cultural life.
Who were the Normans?
The Normans originated from Viking marauders who eventually settled in northern France, in a region now known as Normandy. There, they adopted Christianity, spoke Norman French and integrated into local aristocratic networks. Their success as colonisers stemmed from their ability to blend local customs with a distinct Norman identity, creating a hybrid culture.
For instance, after William the Conqueror's 1066 invasion of England, Norman Romanesque architecture became widespread. Gradually, they incorporated local English elements, as seen in the west front of Ely Cathedral. Meanwhile, the English St. George became a celebrated figure across the Norman world. This pattern of cultural integration was a hallmark of Norman expansion.

The Anglo-Normans arrive in Ireland
By the time the Normans arrived in Ireland in 1169, they had adopted so many 'English' customs that Irish annalists described them as Sasanach, Saxons. In Ireland, as elsewhere, they intermarried with aristocratic families and adopted local customs, while bringing Norman innovations. The creation of counties Dublin, Kildare, Louth and Meath would form the core of what became known as the Pale, where English Common Law was eventually adhered to.
The Normans built impressive stone castles, like Trim Castle in Co. Meath. Gradually, walled towns emerged that hosted markets. Drogheda, Kilkenny and Waterford all owe their medieval layout to the Normans. New town charters outlined the mutual obligations between citizens and corporations. Gothic architecture (which replaced the earlier Romanesque style) adorned Irish churches (see Duiske Abbey in Co. Kilkenny and St Patrick's and Christ Church Cathedrals in Dublin).
Within Norman territories, however, the cultural boundaries between English and Irish were porous. The famous 1366 Statutes of Kilkenny (which were originally written in Norman French) banned Normans from dressing like Irish lords and speaking Irish. Yet, contemporary Irish legal (Brehon) tracts contain Anglo-Norman terms like jury, guarantor and seneschal, showing us how both cultures influenced one another.
The Norman legacy in Irish culture
Perhaps the most fascinating legacy of the Normans in Ireland was the cultural hybridity they fostered. Many Anglo-Norman lords adopted Irish customs and patronised Gaelic poets and scholars. One notable example is Gearóid Iarla, or Gerald fitz Maurice FitzGerald (1338-1398), a descendant of Maurice Fitzgerald, a key figure in the original Anglo-Norman invasion.
Gearóid Iarla composed poetry in Irish, drawing on Irish mythology while also engaging with French courtly poetry. In the 1600s, Seathrún Céitinn, of Anglo-Norman descent (his father was James fitz Edmund Keating) authored Foras Feasa ar Éirinn, a compendium of wisdom about Ireland and a seminal history that drew on native traditions and celebrated Irish culture.
Meanwhile, in Dublin, descendants of Normans had adopted St George as the city's patron saint. By the 1500s, the annual St George's Day pageant had become a major civic event. Actors portrayed St George and his legendary battle with the dragon – played by a mechanical dragon maintained by the city corporation.

A recent project between Maynooth University, the Royal Irish Academy, and the Virtual Record Treasury of Ireland has recently published online a manuscript that describes the distinct identity of an Anglo-Norman community in 17th-century Wexford. Allegedly, they still wore the same style clothes and spoke 'old Saxon English' like their 12th century ancestors. Despite their deep integration into Irish society, many Anglo-Norman families retained elements of their original identity.
More Irish than the Irish themselves?
The question of whether the Anglo-Normans became "more Irish than the Irish themselves" has long been debated, particularly during periods of Anglo-Irish political tensions. In reality, Anglo-Norman lords had to navigate a complex web of local allegiances, dynastic ambitions, and obligations to the English Crown. A telling example is that of George Darcy of Dunmoe, Co. Meath. The Darcys could trace their origin to John Darcy, Viceroy in 1324 who ordered the arrest of Alice Kyteler for witchcraft (fun fact).
Their story is not one of simple conquest or assimilation, but of enduring influence, adaptation and cultural fusion.
During the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, it is purported that both King James II and his rival, William of Orange, were hosted by Darcy on successive days. When asked where his loyalties lay, Darcy allegedly replied "who will be king I do not know; but I'll be Darcy of Dunmoe." This anecdote encapsulates the balancing act performed by many Anglo-Norman families: rooted in Ireland, yet navigating the shifting tides of English and Irish politics.
So, what have the Anglo-Normans ever done for us? Well, apart from counties, the Pale, feudalism, fortified towns, English Common Law, corporations, stone castles, gothic architecture, markets, 'Foras Feasa ar Éirinn', St George pageants, and Norman French – not much, really! Yet what appears from this brief analysis, is that their story is not one of simple conquest or assimilation, but of enduring influence, adaptation and cultural fusion.

A woman on board had fallen and suffered a back injury. And it was evident that transferring the casualty to the lifeboat was not going to be straightforward. It was decided to assist the yacht in moving alongside the pier, where more volunteers from the station would be waiting with a rigid basket stretcher. Advertisement The stretcher was lowered to the yacht and casualty was placed into it and made as comfortable as possible. With the tide quite low, there would have been a considerable risk to the casualty in hauling the stretcher up the harbour wall, so it was decided to transfer the stretcher to the lifeboat instead. The lifeboat then made its way back around the pier and was recovered back to the station. The casualty was then handed over to the care of the National Ambulance Service who transferred her to hospital for further assessment. "There was some great teamwork and some excellent decision making on display in this shout to ensure the casualty got the best care possible." The vessel was making their way to Boatstrand Pier before it got into a struggle. The lifeboat was requested to launch by the Irish Coast Guard at 12.20pm after a report that a yacht was in difficulty in rough seas. There was an easterly wind, Force 4–5 at the time which was creating challenging onshore conditions. The volunteer lifeboat crew including Helm Alan Kelly, Joe Foley, Shane Walsh, and Rian Kelly, quickly made their way to the scene in the inshore lifeboat. The lifeboat crew assessed the situation and decided the safest course of action was to establish a tow and safely bring the vessel which couldn't make any onboard progress to Boatstrand Pier where they were assisted by Bunmahon Coast Guard. Speaking following the call out, Liam Harty, Helvick Head RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager, said: "We would like to commend the sailors for wearing life jackets and having access to phone communication for raising the alarm. 'GOOD OUTCOME' "This resulted in a good outcome today and we wish both of them well. "The wind direction and sea state were challenging today so the quick actions of the yacht's crew in calling for help, combined with their use of life jackets, played a major role in their safe recovery." The secret to growing your best hydrangeas ever
It's hard to think of a plant that sums up late summer and autumn quite like the hydrangea. You only have to walk down any road or glance into a front garden at this time of year to see them in their full summer glory, dripping with big blooms in every shade from soft pink to vivid blue. They're as much a part of our landscape as old stone walls and grassy lanes, bringing a gentle sense of familiarity that feels like home. Whenever I ask my garden design clients about any particular plants that they may like or dislike, I am normally met with quite a vague response, such as 'I really like most plants' or 'there's not really any that I do or don't like'. But say the word hydrangeas and people's reaction is immediate. They will either say 'I love hydrangeas' or 'No, I don't want any in my garden'. Why such strong feelings, I have no idea, perhaps it's because they remind us of the past, for they are a really traditional plant in many Irish gardens. Our mild, damp climate suits them perfectly, which is why they've become such a fixture of gardens here. The classic type most people know is Hydrangea macrophylla, with its lush mopheads. Mopheads give you those big, rounded balls of flower, while lacecaps are a bit more delicate, with tiny true flowers in the centre surrounded by a ring of showier bracts. Both thrive in part shade and moist soil, flowering from midsummer well into autumn. Then there are the paniculata types, with long, cone-shaped heads of white flowers that often turn to pink as they age. They cope with more sun than mopheads and are ideal if your garden is a bit more exposed. Varieties like Limelight and Vanille Fraise are particularly worth keeping an eye out for. The hydrangea du jour right now is Hydrangea Annabelle, grown for its enormous white heads that seem to glow and change shade as the sun moves through the day. One question that always comes up is how to keep hydrangeas blue. It all comes down to soil. In acidic ground, aluminium is more available to the plant, which gives you those striking blue flowers. In neutral or alkaline soils, the same plant will flower pink. If your soil is naturally on the limey side, you can try feeding with aluminium sulphate or growing in pots of ericaceous compost. Just remember that it's far easier to keep them blue in containers than to change an entire border's pH. Looking after hydrangeas is fairly straightforward. Watering is crucial, especially in dry spells, as their big leaves and heavy blooms lose a lot of moisture. A good mulch in spring will help keep roots cool and damp. When flowers fade, you can deadhead by cutting just below the old heads, though I would suggest leaving them on through winter for a bit of winter interest and to protect next year's buds from cold snaps. Come early spring, trim back to a pair of strong buds. With paniculata and arborescens types, you can be a bit braver and cut them back harder in late winter, as they flower on new wood. There's something special about old hydrangeas in walled gardens or running along the sides of old houses. They seem to carry stories with them, year after year, tying us to the gardeners who came before. They maintain interest through late summer and give that connection between summer, giving that reliable backbone when many early summer flowers are starting to fade and the more muted space of winter. Hydrangeas also work well with other plants. They look lovely with hostas and ferns in shadier spots, or underplanted with hardy geraniums for a softer, more natural feel. If you're planting a new hydrangea, take the time to prepare the ground well with plenty of organic matter. The more work you do before planting to improve the soil, the greater the dividends in the longer term, as a really humus-rich soil, which will conserve moisture, will mean less watering in the dry periods. Plant it at the same depth it was in the pot, keep it well watered in its first season, and it will reward you for years. So now, while they're at their absolute best, is the perfect moment to enjoy hydrangeas in all their glory. Whether it's a deep blue mophead glowing in a shady corner, a frothy paniculata turning pink as the days shorten, or a pure white Annabelle, standing proud by the garden gate, they bring a quintessential charm that few other plants can match. They anchor a garden, linking us to the past while promising colour and beauty for many summers to come.

Drive for 600kg MS/cow through breeding & grass in Co. Tipperary
The Derinsallow Herd in Co. Tipperary are driving for 600kg milk solids (MS)/cow this year through effective breeding and grassland management. Jim and Brenda Murray's herd on the Tipperary/Offaly border near Birr was the centre of attention at the Irish Holstein Friesian Association's Focus Farm Walk. The event highlighted six different farms from across the country, all of whom displayed their farm system and were IHFA herds. Yet, every system was different, as every farmer had their own way of making money and milking cows. IHFA chief executive, Laurence Feeney said: "Irish dairying is built on the black-and-white cow, and the Holstein Friesian breed also displays huge variation, and this means that there is a black-and-white cow to suit all farming systems". The six herds and farm systems on display on the day were as follows: Jim and Brenda Murray - Derrinsallow Herd, Co. Tipperary; TJ and Ryan Meegan - Munta Herd, Co. Louth; Maurice Harty - Ballylongane, Co. Kerry PJ Brennan - Monataggart Herd, Co. Waterford; Henry and Sam Dudley - Dekeana Herd, Co. Tipperary - Agriland visited the Dekeana Herd a couple of weeks ago and talked to Sam about his system on 'The Dairy Trail' podcast. Click here to listen Michael McNamara - Barna Herd, Co. Cork. The host farmer, Jim Murray was the first to explain to attendees how he farms, with grass and breeding the focus. He said: "An ounce of breeding is worth a tonne of meal". Jim and Brenda Murray are currently milking 72 cows through a 12-unit parlour with help from their two daughters when they are home. The calving season started on February 6 and finished up on April 22 this year with a calving interval of 362 days, reflecting strong fertility performance from the herd. In 2024, the herd produced 7,155kg of milk/cow with 4.42% fat and 3.66% protein, which added up to 576kg of MS/cow. Jim commented that they already 30kg of MS/cow ahead from this time last year and he is predicting that they will break the 600kg MS/cow mark with an extra 150kg of milk/cow. Jim Murray talking to attendees about his farm system Jim believed that this improvement is stemming from the better weather conditions, grass growth, and the improved genetics coming through the herd. The farmer believes that everyone should have more heifers than what is recommended. "To improve your herd, have too many heifers and pick from the best". Jim also mentioned that "everyone should be thinking of joining the genotyping programme" as it gives a true reflection of the breeding in your herd. In terms of the breeding programme on the farm, Jim uses eight genomic bulls in an effort to improve fat and protein in the herd as well as the health sub-index. Jim uses SireAdvice to match up bulls to cows as he said "no two cows are the same". He matches high solids percentages to high yielders and put more milkier bulls to low yielders with high percentages and is aiming to move from a milk sub-index of €80 to €100. Keeping things simple and utilising as much grass as possible is extremely important to the Murrays, as they only fed 1t of concentrates/ cow last year despite the challenging conditions. The conformation average of the herd is 81 points and the average parity of the herd is 3.67 with a lifetime value/day of €3.51, proving that the cows are doing the business. A number of cows were highlighted on the day for having strong dairy traits, capacity, and udders Aine Murray - who is one of two daughters involved on the farm as well as a research officer with Teagasc - explained how focused the Murrays are on utilising grass and converting it to a profitable milk output. Aine explained that a couple of years ago they upped the amount of grass walks on the farm from 20 to 30 a year. They also began updating soil tests on a regular basis and using them effectively towards a nutrient management plan. From the soil test results, the Murrays have been able to go out spreading with targeted applications, which lead to more grass grown in economically sustainable fashion. The farm is now reseeding more and more every year, targeting paddocks that are underperforming, with 20% less tonnage grown/year then the rest. Aine Murray talking about the grassland management on the farm and the steps to incorporating more clover The farm is currently growing around 14.5t DM/ha each year. According to Aine, "Any paddock growing around 12t DM/ha will be earmarked for reseeding." Every reseed will be targeted with at least 2kg/acre of clover as a lot as Aine claimed that a farm with 20% of an average clover content, it will lead to a 30% increase in milk solids, can reduce nitrogen inputs by up to 100kg N/ha and increase profits by €504/ha. A big change on the farm was also an upgrade of the farm infrastructure, as the paddock sizes were increased to allow for optimal clean outs and more access points added to allow for grazing in more challenging conditions. Between a range of different measures to improve grazing and grass intake on the farm, the Murrays are achieving eight to nine grazings in each paddock per year and are now ready to break that 600kg of milk solids/cow target.
