Five legends, one page: How Patrick Ryan secured a sports memorabilia masterpiece

Getting an autograph from just one of sports' 'GOATs' is a challenge. Now imagine securing signatures from Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Wayne Gretzky and Lionel Messi – and to make it more impressive, getting them all to sign the same item. Then imagine doing it in just one year. That's exactly what super collector Patrick Ryan pulled off, creating a one-of-a-kind piece that spans a century of sports greatness. On June 29, 2024, Ryan claimed a nearly 100-year-old autograph album at auction, its prize possession a page signed by Ruth. That single purchase would spark an extraordinary quest – one that would produce one of the most remarkable pieces of sports memorabilia ever assembled. 'When I bought the Babe Ruth signed album page … it just looked kind of empty and it looked lonely,' Ryan told CNN Sports. That's when he realized he had an upcoming opportunity. Brady was scheduled to attend a Sotheby's and Fanatics sports card auction the following week. 'I said, you know what, maybe there's some ways to spruce up this Babe Ruth autograph,' Ryan said. Brady was the first modern legend to join Ruth's signature. Ryan brought the album page – and a gift – to the auction. 'It was a ticket to the 1981 NFC Championship game, which he famously attended to watch the Dwight Clark catch,' Ryan said. When Brady got up to leave, Ryan presented the ticket before asking for the favor. 'His eyes definitely lit up when he saw what I was having him sign.' From there, Ryan began plotting the rest. Gretzky's signature came next through mutual friends during the NHL Winter Classic in Chicago. A few months later, Messi signed during a private session with Icons, an autograph company. The final piece was Jordan. Ryan kept details private but said, 'Michael has a lot of respect for … the other guys that are on this piece of paper, and I think that's what motivated him to want to make sure it got done.' Remarkably, Ryan secured all five autographs within a year. When it came time to share the finished 'GOAT' page with the world, Ryan knew he wanted Brady to be the one to reveal it. Brady had been the first living legend to sign the page after Ruth, and his connection to the memorabilia world through his investment in trading card stores made him the perfect choice. The reveal took place at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago. Standing face-to-face with the seven-time Super Bowl champion, Ryan handed him the slabbed album page without explanation. Brady turned it over, took in the sight of all five autographs, and his eyes widened. A smile broke across his face as he leaned in to study it more closely. 'To me, the fact that Tom didn't know what I was showing him really was the icing on the cake because we got a really genuine reaction from him,' Ryan said. 'For him to react the way he did was definitely special.' The moment, captured on video, quickly approached a million views online. Now authenticated by sports memorabilia experts PSA and Beckett, the page features five autographs in distinct shades of blue ink: Jordan, Ruth, Brady, Gretzky and Messi. Ryan says the item is not for sale. 'Most of the autographs were gifted to me, so that would be inappropriate to sell it,' he said. Instead, he plans to eventually place it in a museum. 'I think it will live on in a museum whenever my time here passes … so I'll be able to enjoy it for a long, long time.' In the meantime, he's open to displaying it at events or locations meaningful to the athletes. 'A few museums have reached out. … I'm more than willing to have it on display where these athletes would want it,' Ryan said. Ryan has been a collector since age 7, when he sold baseball cards by the roadside. For him, this piece is more than just ink on paper. 'The fact that I've had so many people reach out … that's been really fun,' he said. 'The whole process has been very rewarding, but I'm always looking for what's next in my journey as a collector.' Still, having five of the greatest team-sport athletes in history on one page – and seeing Brady's stunned reaction to the completed piece – gave Ryan perspective. 'It's such a unique piece. … I'm becoming very focused on making sure other pieces in my collection are directionally in that way,' Ryan said.

Watch: Vikings' Donovan Jackson lays out two Patriots defenders in practice

The Vikings revamped their offensive line this offseason, and they used their first-round draft pick to complete the overhaul. They signed Ryan Kelly and Will Fries, then drafted Donovan Jackson to give them three new faces on the interior offensive line. Of course, like anytime you have a new group together, there can be growing pains. His NFL debut against the Texans included a PFF grade of 55.9 and just 12 snaps played, so joint practices this week with the Patriots will be critical. Needless to say, he kicked things off with a bang based on the film that got out on one play. Jackson showcased this ability to be a mover in college while at Ohio State. Anytime a team can add a college offensive lineman who can be a lead blocker like that, it is an invaluable asset. For the Vikings, and the way they like to run the ball in zone concepts, this is a prime example of why he is just going to get better with time for Minnesota. Inside a Jersey guy's historic ‘Jeopardy!' run — and what he's buying with his winnings

For Scott Riccardi, watching 'Jeopardy!' was a family custom, guessing along with his parents and grandparents. Little did he know he'd go on to put his name in the game show's record books, as one of the winningest 'Jeopardy!' contestants ever. The engineer and Rutgers University graduate began his 16-game winning streak on July 3, earning $455,000 in winnings and securing the No. 8 spot on the regular-season earnings list. His 16 wins earned him a place on the 'Leaderboard of Champions,' tied for tenth with previous winner Ryan Long. In a recent interview with NJ Advance Media, Riccardi, 26, recalled the highs and lows of rewatching his historic run. 'The interview portions are probably the toughest for me to rewatch because you're just so nervous and it's difficult to suddenly have to be yourself for 30 seconds to a minute in the middle of this intense trivia where you're just really trying to focus,' said Riccardi. 'It was really fun to relive all this, considering that I had a hazy memory of exactly how things played out for the most part. It's one of the biggest experiences of your life, but the intensity is so overwhelming that you often find yourself forgetting some of the smaller details.' In terms of strategy, Riccardi stuck to the principles of betting big and answering first. He explained that during the competition, it's a game of timing; hearing the clues and buzzing in, even if the answer didn't come to him immediately. His plan worked for the most part: There were very few points during his streak where Riccardi didn't have the answer or ran out of time on a question. 'I would say a good 80% of the time it's just a sense of me knowing the answer and trying to get in first, hoping to get the rebound if someone else gets it wrong,' said Riccardi. 'I think there are quite a few examples looking back at that run where it feels like there are two really convincing possible answers for something. In many cases, I just waited for someone else to get in and hopefully eliminate one of those wrong choices for me.' Riccardi will be back to compete in the Season 41 Tournament of Champions in January (with an airdate to still be determined). To qualify, a contestant must win five consecutive games during the regular season. In terms of preparation, he is sticking to the plan that got him in the winner's circle 16 times before. 'I'm honestly treating prep for this just the way I was for the regular show,' said Riccardi. 'I'm continuing to work on identifying any blind spots and differentiating between things that are easy to mix up.' What does Riccardi plan to buy with a portion of those winnings? It turns out he's a long-time percussionist, so purchasing a marimba is in his future. 'I've had a few marimba companies message me directly as soon as it was mentioned on the show, which was really surreal,' said Riccardi. The main thing is logistics because they're so big and hard to move around. Once I've got a good space situation figured out for it, it'd be cool to have a nice five-octave marimba and vibraphone while I'm at it.'
