Solberg secures first WRC win in Estonia
TARTU: Sweden's Oliver Solberg followed in his world champion father's footsteps as he claimed his first WRC victory in the Rally of Estonia on Sunday. The 23-year-old is the son of 2003 WRC champion Petter Solberg and was making his first appearance in the elite class since 2022.
Solberg made the most of the opportunity handed to him by Toyota, who gave him the chance to drive one of their cars for this rally in the absence of eight-time world champion Sebastien Ogier.
The Swede charged into the lead on Friday and never relinquished it on the high-speed gravel roads. He finished 25.2 seconds ahead of home favorite and 2019 world champion Ott Tanak. Reigning champion Thierry Neuville of Belgium came in third place.
'After everything, so many years trying and trying and trying and dreaming, and me and (co-driver) Elliott (Edmondson) finally made it,' said Solberg. 'I just want to say thank you to Toyota, to the test team who helped me get so comfortable, for all the help this weekend from this beautiful, beautiful team. I've never had such a good time in my life.'
Tanak replaced Elfyn Evans at the top of the WRC standings, moving a point clear of the Welsh driver who ended the weekend in sixth place. – AFP

Local badminton star Shi Yuqi wins China Open men's singles
CHANGZHOU: China's Shi Yuqi hits a return to Taiwan's Chou Tien-chen during their men's singles semi-final at the China Open badminton tournament in Changzhou. – AFP CHANGZHOU: Local badminton powerhouse Shi Yuqi surged to victory in the China Open men's singles final on Sunday, overcoming a slow start and adding to his country's near sweep of the competition. The women's singles title decider, which also featured two Chinese players, saw second-ranked Wang Zhiyi defeat number four Han Yue 21-8, 21-13 in a dominant 39-minute performance. That came just after men's world number three Shi bounced back from a game down to beat Wang Zhengxing 14-21, 21-14, 21-15 in 64 minutes. 'The impact, speed and strength of younger players are definitely better than mine,' said 29-year-old Shi after beating 23-year-old Wang. 'So I can only say that I tried my best to withstand some of his speed.' The victor's hometown of Nantong is a two-hour drive from the competition host city of Changzhou, both in China's eastern Jiangsu province. Shi's latest victory adds to his men's singles crown at the BWF World Tour Finals in December — his second such win in the prestigious competition. In this year's only China Open competition not won by the home country, Indonesia's Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri outperformed Malaysia's Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik 21-15, 21-14 to take the men's doubles title. In the women's doubles, top-ranked duo Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning of China beat fellow countrywomen Jia Yifan and Zhang Shuxian 24-22, 17-21, 21-14 in a battle lasting 69 minutes. Mixed doubles play saw China's Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping defeat compatriots Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin 23-21, 21-17 in 47 minutes. — AFP

Wallabies will not ‘wallow in self-pity' after crushing loss
MELBOURNE: Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt was furious at a controversial late try that cost his team the second Test against the British and Irish Lions, but he also insisted Australia will not 'wallow in self-pity'. Schmidt's men led for 79 minutes in Melbourne on Saturday and thought they had done enough to bank a sensational win and level the three-Test series. But Hugo Keenan's try at the death for a 29-26 victory left them shattered and fuming. Schmidt was adamant the try should not have stood, pointing to a high clean-out in the lead up by Jac Morgan on Carlo Tizzano. But their protests were waved away by Italian referee Andrea Piardi. Schmidt said contact was made above the shoulders, which made it illegal. 'Our perspective is, we felt it was a decision that doesn't really live up to the big player safety push that they're talking about,' he said. 'So that's what we've seen, and we've watched a number of replays from different angles, and so it is what it is. We just have to accept it.' In contrast, Lions coach Andy Farrell saw nothing wrong with the incident. 'I thought it was a brilliant cleanout,' he insisted. Despite Schmidt's obvious frustration at seeing victory snatched from their grasp, he knows he must now lift the team for the third and final Test in Sydney next weekend. It is a dead-rubber, but pride is at stake for his young side who were a level up in Melbourne from their passive performance at the first Test in Brisbane. 'I've told the team how proud I am of them. This group is growing. To stand up and deliver what they did against some of the world's best players, I was just immensely proud,' said Schmidt. 'They were broken at the end, but one of the things you've got to do is keep resolve and keep going forward. 'We can't, and we won't, wallow in self-pity because we didn't get the result. 'It's a blow in the short-term, but you can't get more motivated than what the players demonstrated here,' he added. 'I always felt we had the game to challenge them, and we showed that. I think their experience allowed them to stay in the contest and execute their plan.' Schmidt was installed to restore Australia's reputation after they slumped to 10th in the world following a horror 2023 World Cup under Eddie Jones. His results have been a mixed bag so far, and he said it remained a work in progress. 'We're trying to build consistency and a brand of rugby we enjoy playing,' he said. 'We're learning.' Australia hired former All Blacks lock Tom Donnelly Sunday as an assistant to head coach Joe Schmidt for the upcoming Rugby Championship. The 43-year-old replaces England's Geoff Parling who is leaving his Wallabies job after the British and Irish Lions tour to become Leicester Tigers' coach. 'Watching from afar, the journey the team is on and the improvement they are making is exciting,' said Donnelly, who worked with Super Rugby side Western Force last season. 'I'm looking forward to rolling up my sleeves and doing my part to continue the ongoing growth of the team.' Donnelly played 15 Tests for New Zealand and nearly 100 Super Rugby games, along with three seasons in the France's Top 14, before transitioning to coaching. Australia beat WI by three wickets in fourth T20I match
BASSETERRE: Cameron Green hit an unbeaten 55 and Josh Inglis added 51 to lift Australia to a three wicket win over the West Indies on Saturday in the fourth match of their Twenty20 International series. West Indies were 205 for nine after being sent to bat first after the visitors won the toss, but took five wickets after the midpoint to keep the pressure on Australia chasing 206 to win. The Aussies seized a 4-0 lead in the five-match series and can complete a sweep by winning Monday's finale at Warner Park. Green struck his half-century off 35 balls with three sixes and three fours while Inglis had one six and 10 fours in 30 balls and Glenn Maxwell had 47 runs off 18 balls, hitting six sixes and a four. But a night after Tim David bashed Australia's fastest T20I century off only 37 balls, he was rested from the Aussie lineup and the chase had some tense moments. Australia's Mitchell Marsh was out lbw for a second-ball duck from West Indies left-arm fast-medium pace bowler Jediah Blades. Inglis entered to partner with Maxwell but flew out to deep backward square, caught by Sherfane Rutherford off a ball from Romario Shepherd to start the seventh over, leaving the Aussies on 66 for two. The visitors reached 129 for two at the drinks break but on the next ball to start the 11th over, Maxwell was caught by Jason Holder at long on from a Akeal Hosein delivery. Blades bowled Mitchell Owen for two thanks to Rutherford's deep cover grab and two balls later Blades got his third wicket, sending off Cooper Connolly for a duck on Holder's mid-off catch, the Aussies stuck on 134 for five. Holder took Aaron Hardie for 23 on a long off catch by Shimron Hetmyer to open the 17th over with the Aussies still 21 runs from victory. A drive by Green deflected off Shepherd's fingers and into the stumps of Xavier Bartlett out of his ground, his seventh wicket gone for nine and the Aussies two runs from victory. Green, however, scored runs off the next two deliveries and Sean Abbott pushed Australia across the line, scoring the final run with four balls to spare. West Indies managed only a top score of 31 as Aussie fielders shone. Bartlett bowled out Brandon King for 18 when he chipped out midwicket to Hardie and removed Shai Hope for 10 after Maxwell made a diving catch mid-on. Maxwell made a one-handed grab to retire Roston Chase for nil off a Hardie delivery, leaving West Indies on 42 for three only one ball into the fifth over. Rutherford went out for 31 when caught by Marsh at backward point off a nice delivery from Adam Zampa to make it 67 for four. Owen made a diving catch at deep backward point to retire Hetmyer on 16. Maxwell struck again for the seventh wicket, flicking the ball before going over the boundary so Green could make the catch and send off Shepherd on 28. Green then caught Matthew Forde for 15 to put the West Indies on 184 for eight. Rain hit with four balls remaining but after a 55-minute delay, the hosts scored two final runs. – AFP
