KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Francisco Alvarez is thriving in a minor league uniform, perhaps leaving open only the question of when he will return to the Mets.
The catcher homered for a third time in two games on Sunday for Triple-A Syracuse, where he owns a 1.196 OPS in July.
It has also been noted by Mets officials that pitching prospect Brandon Sproat's consecutive superb starts occurred with Alvarez behind the plate.
Alvarez was optioned by the Mets to Syracuse on June 22 to work on all aspects of his game.

'It's the work ethic, since Day 1 — how positive he has been,' manager Carlos Mendoza said before the Mets lost 3-2 to the Royals. 'Everything has been phenomenal. He is doing everything we are asking him to do, and he continues to put himself in a position where like, 'Hey, you know I am here.' '
Asked if Alvarez was a candidate for recall immediately after the All-Star break, Mendoza said he would be discussing the topic with president of baseball operations David Stearns.

'The good thing is [Alvarez] is doing a lot of the things we are asking him to do,' Mendoza said.
'He's watching the film and driving the ball to all fields and defensively there's been a lot of improvement as well, whether it's receiving, the blocking, we know the throwing has been there. A lot of good things are happening.'
José Buttó, who was placed on the injured list (retroactive to July 1) with an illness, is scheduled to pitch in a minor league rehab game on Tuesday for Single-A St. Lucie, according to Mendoza.
The right-hander will be evaluated afterward for a possible return to the Mets.

Max Kranick was examined Thursday and is deciding his next step — Tommy John surgery is a possibility, according to Mendoza.
Kranick was placed on the IL last month with a right elbow strain.
Mendoza is waiting until later in the week before announcing his starting pitching alignment coming out of the All-Star break.
Among the considerations for Friday's game against the Reds are if David Peterson is used in the All-Star game and how Sean Manaea feels following his 65-pitch appearance on Sunday in his season debut.

Nets' Drew Timme left off both 2025 NBA All-Summer League teams
Despite averaging 25.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game, Nets center Drew Timme did not make first-team or second-team All-Summer League. Brooklyn Nets center Drew Timme played some of his best basketball in the 2025 Las Vegas Summer League when he caught the attention of NBA figures like former center Kendrick Perkins. Brooklyn finished their stint in Las Vegas with just a 1-4 record, but Timme was the main reason for the team's close games. The NBA did not recognize Timme's efforts, though. The NBA announced the first-team and second-team squads for the summer league on Tuesday and unfortunately for Timme and the Nets, the former Gonzaga Bulldog did not make either of the teams. Nique Clifford, Kyle Filipowski, David Jones-Garcia, Jordan Miller, and Terrence Shannon Jr. made up the first team while Ron Holland II, Isaac Jones, Kon Knueppel, Ajay Mitchell, and KJ Simpson composed the second team. Timme, 24, played in three of Brooklyn's five games during their time in Las Vegas and he averaged 25.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game while shooting 55.4% from the field and 64.7% from the free-throw line. Timme led the Nets in points and rebounds per game while being tied for second on the team in assists per game along with players like guard Nolan Traore and forward Tosan Evbuomwan. Of all of the players that played in the summer league, Timme was second behind Utah Jazz forward Kyle Filipowski (29.3 points) in points per game and 15th among Vegas participants in rebounds per game. One could surmise that part of what went into the decision for the first and second teams could have come down to what kind of impact each player made for their respective teams. For example, despite Timme having a solid case for making either of the teams, HoopsHype ranked Timme as the 55th-best player in Las Vegas even with his production in three games. For context, Sacramento Kings forward Isaac Jones was the highest-ranked player in summer league, per HoopsHype, but he made the second-team on the NBA's list.

In signing with Rockets, Dorian Finney-Smith sees ‘great team' with a chance to be special
'I think we've got a great team, and I think we can do something special,' Dorian Finney-Smith says of his choice to join the Rockets in free agency. Houston Rockets forward Dorian Finney-Smith returned to his hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia, last weekend to give back to the community. It was the Finney Family First Foundation's ninth annual free basketball camp and softball tournament, per WAVY-TV, the regional NBC affiliate. In an extended interview with the station, the 32-year-old spoke to a local reporter regarding both his community initiatives and NBA topics, headlined by his new deal with the Rockets. Houston finished at 52-30 and No. 2 in the Western Conference last season, and expectations are even higher after its offseason trade for All-Star forward Kevin Durant. Because the Rockets were able to supplement that acquisition with the signing of quality veteran free agents, such as Finney-Smith and Clint Capela, optimism continues to build. 'I think we've got a great team, and I think we can do something special,' said Finney-Smith, who is widely known around the NBA for his combination of versatile defense and reliable 3-point shooting (41.1% last season). 'I already know who they are. They play hard. Coach Ime (Udoka) is one of the toughest coaches in the league. I've never seen him smile much when you're playing against him. The first time I've ever seen him smile was when we had dinner, like two weeks ago. I like that, because I'm a competitor.' After being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers midway through last season, Finney-Smith said he entered the offseason expecting to stick around. But the right deal was apparently in Houston, and Lakers star Luka Doncic — who Finney-Smith also played alongside for several seasons with the Mavericks — was understanding of the decision. 'He cares,' Finney-Smith said of Doncic. 'When I went to the Rockets, he shot me a text saying, 'I'm happy for you. I'm proud of you. I know you're excited to be back with your kids and family.'' Finney-Smith's family still lives in Dallas after his time with the Mavs, and the ability to sign with another Texas team in relatively close proximity likely worked to Houston's benefit during the negotiations. 'Closer to the family, and an easier transition,' said Finney-Smith, whose deal with the Rockets is worth at least $26 million over two seasons (it can be for as many as four years and $53 million). As for what's next, Finney-Smith said he plans to be present when his children return to school in early August, and then it will be time to prepare for his next NBA chapter in Houston. 'We've got a mini-camp in September, so I'll probably be in Houston in two weeks, trying to look for a place,' Finney-Smith told WAVY-TV. The complete interview, which runs for almost 30 minutes, can be viewed here. More: Rockets announce signing of veteran forward Dorian Finney-Smith
