TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — As the investigation into Sunday's Clearwater ferry crash unfolds, 8 On Your Side has uncovered new revelations about the man who authorities said was operating the other boat.
Florida Fish and Wildlife officers said, Sunday night, a 37-foot recreational center console motorboat ran up and onto the Clearwater ferry, killing one and injuring several others.

Now, take a look at a story News Channel 8 covered almost six years ago.
It was Labor Day, 2019, when officials said a motorboat struck a pontoon boat, leaving two women badly injured.
'That owner turned out to be Jeff Knight,' Brandon Volk said.
Volk represented the two women in court.
They sued Knight, alleging he was negligently operating his vessel when the accident happened.
'There were some severe injuries and significant traumas,' Volk said.
News Channel 8 reporter Nicole Rogers asked, 'What was the outcome of the case in 2019?'
'The parties ended up settling for a confidential sum,' Volk explained.
Knight was cited at the time for careless operation of a vessel and collision of a vessel, but both charges were later dismissed in 2020.
News Channel 8 On Your Side also obtained court records from a 2012 lawsuit that alleged a man fell off of Knight's yacht, hit his head and drowned.
That case was later dismissed.
Neither Knight nor anyone else have been charged in connection with Sunday's collision, but the investigation is still underway.
FWC officers said it will be up to the State Attorney's Office to decide whether or not anyone will face charges related to Sunday's collision.
News Channel 8 reached out to the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney's Office and was told that they will not be able to make a decision on charges until they have all the facts.

Wolfe said the driver told him the manager would be available Monday to discuss the issue. However, Wolfe said he left multiple messages with no response, so he called Better Call Behnken for help. 'Contact me, and let's get this worked out.' Behnken left a message, and hours later, the manager called back, saying this fell through the cracks, but he would make this right. Thursday evening, Wolfe sids a check for the full amount was hand-delivered to his home. Behnken will follow up after Wolfe is able to cash the check. The tow truck manager told Behnken this was an honest mistake, and he would take care of covering the costs of the damages. Advertisement Two former Indiana players — Haris Mujezinovic and Charlie Miller — originally filed a lawsuit against the university last October. Since then, at least three other ex-athletes have joined the lawsuit, and 10 additional men are planning to "pursue litigation," their attorney told ESPN. Bomba, who served as the team's physician for roughly 30 years, is accused of regularly giving players rectal exams during physicals. Rectal exams were not considered standard protocol for healthy, college-aged men at the time the exams were allegedly being performed, per ESPN. The former players believe those exams constitute sexual misconduct. They also allege university officials — including legendary coach Bob Knight — were aware of the exams and did nothing to stop them. Players claim they complained about the exams to Knight and former head athletic trainer Tim Garl, who continued to refer players to Bomba. Knight died in 2023. Garl served as the team's head athletic trainer for 45 years. Indiana declined to renew his contract in April. After the initial lawsuit was filed, Bomba was found competent to be questioned about the allegations. He took part in that deposition in December, invoking his Fifth Amendment right multiple times. It determined that while Bomba did perform those exams, he did so in a "clinically appropriate manner." The investigation added there was "no evidence to suggest that Dr. Bomba achieved sexual gratification," per ESPN. At least two men reportedly considering filing suit contradicted those findings, with one claiming Bomba "fondled his genitalia" during a physical. Another man said Bomba performed a rectal exam on the man when he was a minor in high school. Indiana argued in court filings that the allegations by the ex-players fall outside the state's two-year statute of limitations regarding sexual-assault claims, per ESPN. In May, a magistrate judge allowed the plaintiffs to continue gathering records regarding the lawsuit. It's possible a presiding district court judge could dismiss the claims, however.

Animal control officer is mauled by dog during welfare check in Fort Lauderdale
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WFLA) — A Broward County Animal Control officer was hospitalized last week after she was attacked by a dog and suffered serious injuries. The attack happened in the 700 block of Southwest 14th Terrace around 7 p.m. Thursday. According to NBC affiliate WTVJ, the animal control worker, Martina Bernard, was doing a welfare check on an American Staffordshire terrier mix when the dog began to maul her. Police said that a neighbor called 911 after hearing a woman cry for help and seeing the dog with its teeth around her neck. Body camera video shows officers arriving at the scene to find Bernard laying on the ground in the backyard with her face covered in blood. The dog's owner is also seen in the video holding down the dog, which had been stabbed in an attempt to remove it from Bernard. The officer can be heard asking the woman where she was bit, to which she responds, 'All over my head, my face, my breast, my neck.' Bernard was rushed to Broward health Medical Center for treatment.
