GDOT and RCSO warn the public to heed traffic laws ahead of '100 Deadliest Days'

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – After multiple deadly crashes in recent weeks, law enforcement and the Georgia Department of Transportation are urging the public to obey traffic laws as we head into the summer. The hotter months are just around the corner, which means the roads are about to get even busier. But law enforcement is warning the public after seeing an uptick in traffic violations. 'The one thing I've noticed a lot in Richmond County and in Columbia County when I'm driving is that people do not like slowing down at yellow lights,' said RCSO Captain Mike Lewis. 'People do not like slowing down at yellow lights. When the light turns yellow, that doesn't mean speed up to make it through the intersection.' The Richmond County Sheriff's Office has responded to 3 deadly crashes just in the last 2 weeks—including one on Peach Orchard Road that killed 8-year-old Camden Poole. The Georgia Department of Transportation says the summertime also brings a higher chance of crashes in work zones. 'We have a lot more road construction and highway maintenance happening in the summer months, so our crews are out on the roads more often, and you have greater chance of work zone crashes as a result of that,' said District 2 Communications Specialist Will Volk. Data from GDOT shows nearly 100 deadly crashes happened across the CSRA last year alone. The more common causes are following too close and failing to yield—that's why they and law enforcement are sharing important tips so you can stay safe. 'Avoid distracted driving, put the cell phone down—that's a big one. Taking your eyes off the road even for a few seconds can cause someone to suddenly break. If you don't see that, you can rear-end somebody,' Volk said. 'Green light means go, yellow light means slow down, and red means stop. If more people did that, it would cut down a lot on our vehicle accidents, and especially would cut down on our fatalities as well,' said Lewis. Volk added, 'Most crashes are preventable. So, when you're behind the wheel and you're thinking about doing these dangerous driving behaviors, just think. These kinds of things can send somebody to the hospital, or could send somebody to the funeral home. Are you okay with that? Make sure you ask yourself that question before you do these things.' Law enforcement says it's also a critical time to follow the rules of the road, as the '100 Deadliest Days' for teen drivers starts in less than 2 weeks. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Why 90,000 South Africans booked local cruises in 2024/2025

Local cruises among South Africans are gaining popularity, with over 90,000 travellers embracing ocean-bound getaways in the 2024/2025 summer season. Image: File picture As more South Africans are looking for holiday experiences that combine value, adventure, and comfort, one travel style is steadily gaining favour, local seasonal cruises around South Africa's east and west coasts. The 2024–2025 summer season saw over 90,000 South Africans embrace this rising trend, heading off on ocean-bound getaways across the region. Travellers set sail from local ports to explore the tropical coastline of Mozambique, Reunion and Mauritius, and the desert-meets-sea coastline of Namibia on the MSC Musica, the 3 200-passenger liner that cruised South African waters for the last season. With itineraries designed to appeal to a wide variety of preferences—from laid-back beach breaks to cultural explorations—cruising continues to make a strong impression on both new and returning guests. According to Ross Volk, Managing Director of MSC Cruises South Africa, anticipation is already building for the 2025–2026 season. "We are very pleased to see our loyal customers return to cruise with us every new season and we appreciate their support. 'It is also great to see new travellers discovering cruising as an alternative holiday which offers good value for money. The demand for cruising locally continues to show growth," he says. Four main routes operate out of Durban and Cape Town. The Durban-to-Mozambique voyage remains a top choice for South Africans, while the Cape Town-to-Walvis Bay journey has proven especially popular among international visitors. Additional routes include Durban-to-Mauritius and Durban-to-Cape Town, each offering unique cultural and scenic experiences. The upcoming season will be marked by the return of a popular MSC Opera to local waters. After completing a Mediterranean stint, MSC Opera will begin her second season here with 37 sailings scheduled between November 2025 and April 2026. 'We have made two exciting additions to the upcoming season,' Volk shares. 'An extension to the season, which will offer guests the opportunity to book an additional departure in November, and we have introduced Mamoudzou as a new destination. Mamoudzou is a beautiful city on the coast of Mayotte, another great destination for our guests to discover.' With familiar favourites and new destinations on the horizon, the upcoming cruising season promises to be even more popular with South African cruisers. IOL Travel Video Player is loading. Who is Jeff Knight? Legal history of boater FWC says was involved in Clearwater ferry crash

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — As the investigation into Sunday's Clearwater ferry crash unfolds, 8 On Your Side has uncovered new revelations about the man who authorities said was operating the other boat. Florida Fish and Wildlife officers said, Sunday night, a 37-foot recreational center console motorboat ran up and onto the Clearwater ferry, killing one and injuring several others. Attorney for boater involved in Clearwater ferry crash explains client's side of events Now, take a look at a story News Channel 8 covered almost six years ago. It was Labor Day, 2019, when officials said a motorboat struck a pontoon boat, leaving two women badly injured. 'That owner turned out to be Jeff Knight,' Brandon Volk said. Volk represented the two women in court. They sued Knight, alleging he was negligently operating his vessel when the accident happened. 'There were some severe injuries and significant traumas,' Volk said. News Channel 8 reporter Nicole Rogers asked, 'What was the outcome of the case in 2019?' 'The parties ended up settling for a confidential sum,' Volk explained. Knight was cited at the time for careless operation of a vessel and collision of a vessel, but both charges were later dismissed in 2020. News Channel 8 On Your Side also obtained court records from a 2012 lawsuit that alleged a man fell off of Knight's yacht, hit his head and drowned. That case was later dismissed. Neither Knight nor anyone else have been charged in connection with Sunday's collision, but the investigation is still underway. FWC officers said it will be up to the State Attorney's Office to decide whether or not anyone will face charges related to Sunday's collision. News Channel 8 reached out to the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney's Office and was told that they will not be able to make a decision on charges until they have all the facts. National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week: G DOT bringing awarness around safer work zones

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – This week is National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week. Georgia Department of Transportation is working with other transportation departments nationwide to bring awareness to safer driving in work zones. The CSRA knows its fair share of road work zones, and G-DOT wants to use this week to highlight the safety of those construction zones. As we head into the spring and summer months, more workers will work on Georgia's roads for maintenance or construction. This year, G-DOT has a theme it wants you to remember to help keep you and those construction workers safe. 'There's actually a slogan for this year's campaign. Respect the zone so we all get home. And that sums it up really well,' said Will Volk, District 2 Communications Specialist, Georgia DOT. G-DOT says work zone safety is a shared responsibility. They hope the slogan reminds drivers to slow down, not be distracted, and pay attention to any construction or maintenance workers, first responders, Highway Emergency Response Operators, Coordinated Highway Assistance & Maintenance Program, or tow truck drivers. 'Do not speed through these work zones because they're just out there. They could have to go into the travel lane at some point to do this work, and if it pops out and you're going too fast, you might not have enough time to react. The same thing goes for distracted driving,' said Volk. 'We may have about five, six signs out. Big arrow board, but a lot of times they really don't see it, and that's because they are a little distracted,' said Tarrod Jackson, Forman, Routine Maintenance in Richmond County, Georgia DOT. ' So, we ask that everybody be aware of us on the road. We are performing a public service and want to see our families at the end of the day too.' In 2024, there were 12,345 work zone-related crashes in Georgia, which resulted in over 4500 injuries, 11 fatalities involving motor vehicles, and 7 pedestrian fatalities. 'People have been injured. People have died, unfortunately before here in Georgia. We don't want that to happen. The target is zero deaths, and we just need everybody to, you know, work with us,' said Volk. As you enter a work zone, stay alert and prepared for any circumstance you may encounter. Just like you, these workers are trying to get home to their families. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Jean Silva makes case for title shot after UFC 314 finish of Bryce Mitchell

Jean Silva argues why he should be next for UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski. Silva (16-2 MMA, 5-0 UFC) remained unbeaten in the octagon when he ran through Bryce Mitchell for a Round 2 submission this past Saturday at UFC 314 in Miami. With the win, the Fighting Nerds member debuted in the UFC featherweight rankings at No. 11. Silva took to X to explain his case for a shot at newly crowned featherweight champion Volkanovski (27-5 MMA, 14-4 UFC), who defeated Diego Lopes to reclaim the vacant belt in Saturday's main event. 'I don't think anyone is going to give me anything,' Silva said. 'If it's not a title shot, then it better be a fight that puts me right there. But let's look at the facts: Volk said he wants to stay active and face the best in the division. I've already proven that I deserve it and that I'm the best. Diego Lopes got a title shot with five wins and one loss, with two of those wins by decision, while I have five wins, all by finish. This is the fight that makes sense. I deserve it, and I'm ready! 'I faced the biggest knockout artist at lightweight and knocked him out. I took on one of the best grapplers in the division and submitted him. I beat a guy who had never been knocked out, and I knocked him out. And I also faced a multi-time world kickboxing champion and knocked him out, too. If I don't deserve a title shot, I don't know who does. I trust the UFC, Dana White, Hunter (Campbell), and Sean Shelby. I'm ready for whatever they decide.' Silva also took a dig at frontrunner Movsar Evloev, whom Volkanovski mentioned as a possibility before and after UFC 314. 'I'm thinking here after I respectfully said that I wanted to face Volk next that a bunch of guys that nobody cares about showed up and start to talk about that fight too. I'm definitely in the right way.' I'm thinking here after I respectfully said that I wanted to face Volk next that a bunch of guys that nobody cares about showed up and start to talk about that fight too. I'm definitely in the right way. — Jean de Lord Silva (@Jeansilvamma96) April 15, 2025 For more on the card, visit MMA Junkie's event hub for UFC 314.
