Posts falsely claim low-cost carriers to introduce standing seats in 2026

"Standing seats in planes: A new reality of budget airlines beginning 2026," reads a Malay-language Facebook post on May 18, 2025. It describes the seats as "a cross between bicycle seats and a standing position" and claims they are being introduced to reduce cost and increase capacity. The post features three images of the vertical, saddle-like seats designed to allow passengers to sit in a semi-upright position. The false claims spread after British tabloid Daily Mail published an article titled "Is this the future of travel? Low cost airlines could launch standing only seats as early as next year" on May 21, 2025 (archived link). The report claims that the SkyRider standing chairs, made by aircraft seat manufacturer Aviointeriors, can increase passenger capacity by 20 percent. Similar posts were shared elsewhere on Facebook. But Aviointeriors clarified in an Instagram post on May 23 that the "standing seats" were merely prototypes dating back to 2012 (archived link). "Designed as a bold response to one of the aviation industry's most pressing challenges, while maximizing space and ergonomics it was never meant to be taken at face value," the company said. A check on Aviointeriors' website also shows the SkyRider standing seats are not part of the company's catalogue (archived link). When contacted by AFP, the EASA confirmed that it had not received applications to certify standing seats in commercial aircraft. "Such seats would pose significant technical challenges, particularly in terms of emergency evacuation," it told AFP, adding that the design of a plane's fuselage does not allow for passengers to stand near windows. "Any airline wishing to introduce this type of seat will face significant challenges, both in terms of aircraft reconfiguration and in demonstrating compliance with strict safety and evacuation requirements." Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair also told AFP that the airline was not considering introducing the seats. However, its head Michael O'Leary said in 2009 that he would not have any problem introducing standing seats on planes, but pointed out that such a move will likely be rejected by the European Union for safety reasons.

Legendary Coronation Street duo reunite after 11 years and fans can't believe it

Two Coronation Street legends have reunited 11 years after last appearing on the cobbles together, and fans can't believe it. It comes as Katherine Kelly, who played the role of Becky McDonald, posted a reunion picture with Julie Hesmondhalgh, best known for the character Hayley Cropper. Hayley was the first transgender character on a British soap and throughout her time in Weatherfield, formed close friendships with Fiz Brown (Jennie McAlpine) and Carla Connor (Alison King), as well as Becky. After first joining the ITV programme in 2006, Becky formed an unbreakable bond with Hayley and her husband, Roy, and they remained a tight-knit family-like trio until she departed for Barbados in 2012. Then sadly, after 16 years, Hayley's time came to an end on Corrie when she decided to end her life after battling with terminal pancreatic cancer in 2014. However, Katherine's recent Instagram post has left fans rather excited, as it appears the pair are working together once more. As well as a picture of the actresses hugging with huge smiles on their faces, Katherine also shared a picture of Julie in a recording booth and another of a recording studio set up with equipment. Katherine captioned the photos: 'A day spent with one of my FAVOURITE human beings deserves a place on the grid @jhesmondhalgh.' One fan commented: "Icons! And the 'Reunited' song comes to mind.' Another wrote: 'This photo has made my day, all we need is David in the middle x' Someone else said: 'What ever this is I can't wait to watch.' Also on social media, this Corrie viewer put: 'HAYLEY AND BECKY REUNION AHHH MY GODDDDD.' While this person added: 'Always Hayley n Bex to me but both great actors post Corrie.' Man City signs Reijnders from AC Milan to complete $150M spending spree

Manchester City concluded a $150 million spending spree ahead of the Club World Cup by announcing the signing of Netherlands midfielder Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan on Wednesday. The 26-year-old Reijnders moved for an initial fee of 55 million euros ($63 million) and is the second midfielder — after France playmaker Rayan Cherki — to join City in the special June 1-10 transfer window created to allow sides in the 32-team Club World Cup to reshape their squads. City paid Lyon $41 million for Cherki and also signed Algeria left back Rayan Aït-Nouri from Wolverhampton for $42 million. After deciding not to push to sign Florian Wirtz — the Germany playmaker is close to joining Liverpool, according to reports in the British media — City has spent around the same amount on three players. Add this latest splurge to an outlay of more than $200 million in the winter transfer window and City has already spent at least $350 million on players in 2025 to provide manager Pep Guardiola with a squad capable of reclaiming the Premier League title from Liverpool. Breakthrough season Reijnders has just been named as the best midfielder in Serie A after a breakthrough campaign in which he scored 15 goals and added five assists across all competitions for Milan, which endured a dismal season and failed to qualify for Europe. He joined Milan from AZ Alkmaar in 2023 for a fee of around 20 million euros (then $22.4 million) and recently signed a contract extension through to June 2030. That's the length of his contract at City, too. City is releasing De Bruyne to end his 10-year stint at the club and now has Reijnders and Cherki to link up with Rodri in an enticing midfield set-up. Reijnders said he was 'ecstatic' to be joining City. 'It is also a dream come true to play in the Premier League,' he said. 'This league has seen many of the best Dutch players perform through the years and it's an inspiration to follow in their footsteps.' City director of football Hugo Viana said Reijnders — who specializes in being a ball-carrying midfielder — will add 'extra energy, composure and creativity to our midfield.' City announced the transfer of Reijnders a day after the special transfer window closed but appears to have signed him in time for him to play in the new-look, 32-team Club World Cup, which starts on Saturday. City is in the same group as Juventus, Al Ain and Wydad Casablanca and its first match is on June 18. ___ AP soccer:
