Powerful solar winds squish Jupiter's magnetic field 'like a giant squash ball'
A massive solar windstorm in 2017 compressed Jupiter's magnetosphere "like a giant squash ball," a new study reports.
The discovery stemmed from an unusual temperature pattern scientists observed in Jupiter's atmosphere using the Keck Observatory in Hawai'i. Normally, Jupiter's powerful polar auroras inject significant heat into the gas giant's upper atmosphere near the poles.
These spectacular lights resemble those seen on Earth, where they're generated when energetic particles interact with our planet's magnetic field, but Jupiter's auroras are believed to proceed through a different mechanism and are far more intense and energetic.
When scientists from Reading University in England detected unexpectedly high temperatures stretching across half of Jupiter's circumference — reaching over 930 degrees Fahrenheit (500 degrees Celsius), significantly higher than the typical atmospheric background temperature of 660 degrees F (350 degrees C) — they were baffled.

"Typically, temperatures decrease gradually toward the equator, reflecting how auroral energy is redistributed across the planet," the team wrote in their paper, which was published today (April 3) in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.
As "there are no known heating mechanisms capable of producing a feature with these temperatures outside of the auroral region," the team proposed that the superheated region was likely "launched" toward the equator from the poles.
To figure out how this might have occurred, the researchers combined ground-based observations from the Keck telescope with data from NASA's Juno spacecraft, which has been exploring Jupiter and its moons since 2016. They traced the cause of this sudden heat displacement to a dense burst of solar wind that compressed Jupiter's enormous magnetosphere — a magnetic bubble surrounding the planet, shaped by its own magnetic field. (Earth has one, too! In fact, life would not be possible without it.)
"We have never captured Jupiter's response to solar wind before — and the way it changed the planet's atmosphere was very unexpected," study lead author James O'Donoghue of the University of Reading said in a statement. "This is the first time we've ever seen a thing like this on any outer world."
The compression of the magnetosphere by the solar wind appears to have intensified auroral heating at Jupiter's poles, causing the upper atmosphere to expand and spill hot gas typically confined to the poles down toward the equator, team members said.
"The solar wind squished Jupiter's magnetic shield like a giant squash ball," O'Donoghue said. "This created a super-hot region that spans half the planet. Jupiter's diameter is 11 times larger than Earth's, meaning this heated region is enormous."
And such solar wind events are believed to hit Jupiter two to three times per month!

Scientists had previously thought that Jupiter's fast rotation would shield it from such effects, keeping auroral heating confined to the polar regions due to barriers created by the planet's strong winds. However, the new findings challenge that assumption, revealing that even the solar system's largest planet is at the sun's mercy.
"We've studied Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus in increasing detail over the past decade. These giant planets are not as resistant to the sun's influence as we thought — they're vulnerable, like Earth," O'Donoghue said in the statement.
"Jupiter acts like a laboratory, allowing us to study how the sun affects planets in general," he added. "By watching what happens there, we can better predict and understand the effects of solar storms which might disrupt GPS, communications and power grids on Earth."

How China is battling the chikungunya virus

After thousands of cases of the debilitating chikungunya infection were found across the southern Guangdong province, public health officials have been creative in their efforts to contain it. 'Compulsive killers' China employed hardline tactics during the Covid-19 pandemic and this time the authorities are using similar "patriotic public health" measures like mass testing, mandatory quarantines, widespread surveillance and citywide lockdowns. But they are also using more novel methods. The virus is transmitted by infected mosquitoes, so China is using giant "compulsive killers", known as elephant mosquitoes, whose larvae "devour" the Aedes mosquito, which passes chikungunya to people, said The Telegraph. A single larvae can consume a "staggering" number of mosquito larvae, up to several thousand, according to a paper published last year in the Journal of Tropical Medicine, and their "compulsive killing" and "predatory prowess" extend beyond "direct consumption" – after killing the mosquito larvae they "leave them uneaten". Mosquitoes aren't the only creatures being used. Researchers at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangdong have "deployed 5,000 larvae-eating fish, which consume the larvae that hatch in the city's lakes". Insecticide is being widely used and Chinese state television has shown masked soldiers spraying it "around city streets, residential areas, construction sites" and other areas, said The Associated Press. After "unusually" heavy rain and high temperatures "worsened the crisis", officials began using drones to "try to find standing water, where mosquitoes lay eggs". Meanwhile, community workers in red vests are going "door to door" to inspect homes, said The New York Times, and, according to local social media, they're ordering residents to empty all containers of water, including water bowls for their dogs. 'Bend over' The virus was first identified in Tanzania in 1952, and has since spread to 110 countries. It's most commonly found in sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia and South America. It took its name from a Swahili dialect and translates approximately as "to bend over" – a reference to its debilitating symptoms. It is rarely fatal but it can cause fever, a rash and joint pain. It can also lead to severe illness in vulnerable groups such as newborn babies, the elderly and people with underlying medical conditions. Another 1,387 cases of chikungunya virus were confirmed in China last week, said the Daily Mail. NASA's Perseverance rover spies mysterious 'helmet' on Mars (photo)

NASA's Perseverance rover has stumbled across a curious, volcano-shaped rock on the surface of Mars that looks rather like a weathered battle helmet. Captured by the rover's Mastcam-Z instrument on Aug. 5, 2025, the rock displays a pointed peak and pitted nodular texture that evokes an image of armor forged centuries ago. On Earth, similar nodule textures can form through chemical weathering, mineral precipitation or even volcanic processes. Perseverance found a similar rock in March 2025. And it's these spherules that have scientists intrigued. "This hat-shaped rock is composed of spherules. This rock's target name is Horneflya and it's distinctive less because of its hat shape (which looks to me to be generally consistent with the pyramid shape we often see in of wind-eroded float blocks on the surface of Mars) and more because it's made almost entirely of spherules," David Agle, a spokesperson for the Perseverance team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, told Scientists think that in some rocks seen on Mars, these spherules form when groundwater passed through pores in sedimentary rocks. But they're not sure if all of them formed this way; Perseverance's science team will have its work cut out for it analyzing more rocks to search for answers to this Martian geology mystery and other burning Red Planet questions. The Mastcam-Z instrument, a pair of zoom-capable cameras on Perseverance's neck-like mast, allows scientists to capture high-resolution stereo images and spot unusual features like this spherule-covered "helmet" rock from a distance. Perseverance has uncovered a growing gallery of odd rock shapes, from donut-like meteorites to avocado-like stones. These types of images are examples of a phenomenon known as pareidolia, which describes the human brain's tendency to impose a familiar pattern on otherwise random visual data — whether that's a face in the clouds, a rabbit in the moon, or a medieval helmet on the Martian surface. For now, the helmet rock remains a compelling snapshot of Martian history. Features like this help scientists piece together the Red Planet's environmental history, showing how wind, water and internal processes may have sculpted the landscape over billions of years. Perseverance is currently exploring the northern rim of the Jezero Crater, having successfully completed a challenging ascent to the crest known as "Lookout Hill" late last year.
