Marchand shatters record as US, Australia win more world gold
Racing in the semi-finals at the world championships, the 23-year-old Frenchman wiped more than a second off the previous record of 1:54.00 set by Ryan Lochte in 2011.
Marchand beat Michael Phelps's long-standing 400m medley record at the world championships in Japan two years ago.
'Actually I can't believe it right now,' said Marchand, who won four individual golds in front of his home fans at the Paris Olympics a year ago and was the face of the Games.
'I knew I was going to be close to my PB (personal best) because I felt really good today and preparation has been pretty good.
'But 1:52 is unbelievable for me.'
Marchand took an extended break from swimming after Paris and only returned to competition in May.
He is focusing on the individual medley events in Singapore and had said he was gunning for Lochte's record.
Marchand got his world championships campaign under way yesterday morning, clocking a time of 1:57.63 in the heats.
He said he would go all-out for the record in the semi-finals rather than conserve his energy for Thursday's final.
In yesterday's finals, Tunisia's Ahmed Jaouadi won the 800m freestyle thanks to a perfectly timed attack.
Jaouadi made his move midway through the race and eased away to touch the wall in 7min 36.88sec, ahead of German pair Sven Schwarz (7:39.96) and 400m champion Lukas Maertens (7:40.19).
Jaouadi, who finished fourth at last year's Paris Olympics, clocked the third-fastest time ever.
'At some point I saw that the rhythm wasn't that fast so I decided to just go and make the move,' said the 20-year-old.
Ireland's Olympic champion Daniel Wiffen finished last. Australia's Olympic champion Mollie O'Callaghan was just as emphatic in romping to victory in the women's 200m freestyle in 1:53.48.

Djokovic withdraws from ATP Cincinnati Masters
Novak Djokovic withdrew on Monday from this week's start of the ATP Cincinnati Masters, with the pullout coming a year to the day from his Paris Olympic gold medal victory. Tournament officials confirmed the news to The Athletic, meaning the 38-yearold Serb will have played no matches between his Wimbledon semi-final loss to Jannik Sinner and the US Open start in three weeks. World number one Sinner, who like Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz skipped the current ATP Toronto Masters in order to rest and recover from Wimbledon, has been in Cincinnati since the weekend. Sinner and his team posted a golf course selfie to social media on Monday, one day after an opening practice session at the pre-US Open event.

Naser Locks In for Europe Sprint Swing
TDT | Manama Bahraini 400m star opens August in Krakow before Diamond League push Bahrain's Salwa Eid Naser is set for a high-stakes month on the track as she prepares to race in four key European meetings ahead of next month's World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. The 27-year-old 400m specialist, who took Olympic silver in Paris last year and won world gold in 2019, opens her August campaign this Saturday in Krakow, Poland, where she'll run the rarely contested 300m against Olympic bronze medallist Natalia Kaczmarek. From there, Naser returns to her signature distance in three Wanda Diamond League meets: in Chorzow (Aug 16), Lausanne (Aug 20), and Zurich, where she'll aim to secure a third Diamond Trophy. Currently ranked fifth in the 400m Diamond League standings, Naser is well-positioned for the finals and heads into this four-race stretch with a season-best of 48.67 seconds, clocked earlier this year in Jamaica. With Tokyo's global stage looming and Bahrain counting on her firepower, Naser's European run will be the final tune-up in what's shaping up to be one of the most competitive 400m seasons in recent memory.
