The Red Sox have broken Alex Cora: ‘We're not getting better'
Alex Cora sounds like a defeated manager.
Boston's World Series champion manager had an absolutely dejected tone after losing a second straight one-run home game Tuesday to the Angels and falling a season-high five games under .500.
The Red Sox (29-34) are a staggering 6-17 in one-run games.

'We keep making the same mistakes, we're not getting better. At one point, it has to be on me, I guess, right? I'm the manager, so, I gotta keep pushing them to be better,' Cora said after the 4-3 loss in 10 innings. 'They're not getting better. They're not. We keep making the same mistakes. I'll be very honest about it, very open about it. You get frustrated, but at what point it's like, OK, what we gonna do, what's going to change? Because we keep doing the same thing.
'We can keep talking about one-run losses. …. It's the same thing. Is it effort, preparation, attention to detail? I have no idea. I watched that game, I was like, 'Wow, this is real.' It's frustrating.'

Boston entered the year with big aspirations after acquiring Alex Bregman and Garrett Crochet, among others, but the Red Sox currently are closer to the AL-worst White Sox than the AL-best Tigers.
They're only four games ahead of the woeful Orioles.
Tuesday's game featured a litany of mistakes that could have prevented a loss to the Angels, especially during Los Angeles' three-run third inning.

The inning began with starter Brayan Bello hitting No. 8 hitter Jo Adell and then walking No. 9 hitter Chris Taylor, owner of a .384 OPS.
Zach Neto followed with an RBI single to plate a run, but center fielder Ceddane Rafaela airmailed his throw home, and it allowed the runners to move to second and third with no outs.
Nolan Schanuel then laced a two-run single for a 3-0 edge.

Cora also lamented his team's inability to get down a bunt and not advance runners when needed, with Boston finishing 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
'You can talk about chances. I can tell you [about] the chances we gave the opposition,' Cora said, per MLB.com. 'We were lucky to be in that game at the end, to be honest with you.'
Boston is now 3-8 since losing Bregman, with the third baseman set to be out for a long stretch with a right quad injury.
The Red Sox could be in a tough spot in their attempt to stay afloat while he's gone unless they promote MLB.com No. 1 prospect Roman Anthony.

Things won't get easier this weekend when they visit the division-leading Yankees, who have a chance to bury their rivals.

'Routine ground balls for double plays we don't turn, we throw to the wrong bases, we miss cutoff guys, (pitching fielding practice)s were horrible,' Cora said, according to MLB.com.
'So, there's a lot of bad right now.'

If they do, they would have plenty of players drawing interest in the trade market. Advertisement MLB insider for the New York Post, Jon Heyman, went on MLB Network and painted the picture for the Red Sox amid the trade deadline speculation. Heyman reported that the Red Sox, while having solid trade pieces, do not want to sell. "They've got some pieces as well," Heyman said. "But as I said, even a few games under .500, they do not want to sell." The Red Sox not wanting to be sellers isn't a surprise, as it would indicate that the team is out of contention for the postseason. Missing the postseason again could also cause Red Sox manager Alex Cora to lose his job. So, with Cora's job on the line and a postseason berth still within reach, the Red Sox do not want to be sellers. Advertisement However, in a situation where they do end up becoming sellers, they would have plenty of assets available. "There would be big interest in Jarren Duran if they do decide to sell," Heyman added. "I'm not saying it's likely they'll sell, but if they do, it should be a very good sale." Both Chapman and Buehler could be moved if the Red Sox fall out of the postseason race. They'd have plenty of teams lining up for those two players, and it'd be an even longer line for Duran. Jarren Duran, Ceddane Rafaela, and Wilyer Abreu make up the Major League talent, but there's also the number one prospect in baseball, Roman Anthony, waiting for a call-up. Advertisement With Anthony sitting in Triple-A, the Red Sox have been speculated to move Duran to pave the way for Anthony. Multiple trade ideas have been made surrounding the potential of a Duran trade. But, a recent trade idea from ESPN's Paul Hembekides had the Red Sox swinging a deal with the Seattle Mariners for multiple MLB-ready pitchers, and one of their top-five prospects. Hembekides proposed an idea that would send starting pitcher Luis Castillo, relief pitcher Matt Brash, and fifth-ranked Mariners prospect, catcher Harry Ford, for just Duran. While Duran is a great player, there are some limitations to his game. His 2024, where he accumulated an incredible 8.7 WAR, is unlikely to be repeated. While he's under team control through the 2028 season, he is already 28 years old. Advertisement Hembekides' trade idea would net the Red Sox three players under team control through at least 2028, including a top 100 prospect and an All-Star starting pitcher. All for just Duran. Boston Red Sox left fielder Jarren Duran (16) runs out of the dugout before the start of a game against the Atlanta Braves at Fenway Canha-Imagn Images Brash is 27 years old and will be in arbitration years from 2026 to 2028. Castillo is under contract for $24.15 million through 2027, with a vesting option for 2028. Ford is a top 100 prospect with at least six more years of control left. Brash has a 0.00 ERA through his first 9.1 innings of work in 2025. In 2024, he threw in a MLB most 78 games, pitching 70.2 innings with 107 strikeouts and a 3.06 ERA. Castillo, in his ninth season in the Major Leagues, has a 4-3 record with a 3.03 ERA. He's struck out 55 batters and walked 23 over the course of 68.1 innings pitched for Seattle. The three-time All-Star is having another solid start to the year and would be a huge boost to the Red Sox rotation if traded. Advertisement Ford, meanwhile, is a 22-year-old catcher who is MLB's 64th-ranked prospect. He has a .321 batting average in Triple-A with six home runs and 28 RBIs, along with an impressive .921. Overall, the Red Sox would land multiple MLB-ready pitchers for the next three seasons, along with a young catcher prospect who's ranked fifth in the Mariners system. All for just Duran. While a great player for the Red Sox, with Anthony waiting in the wings in Triple-A, this haul for Duran would be a hard deal to turn down. Hembekides' trade idea is a wild one, and it would set the Red Sox up for success in 2025 and into the future.
