Qatar launches 100% tax penalty exemption initiative

Dubai: Qatar's General Tax Authority has announced a six-month financial penalty exemption initiative, offering businesses a 100 per cent waiver on tax-related fines as part of its commitment to fostering economic growth and strengthening the country's investment environment.
Effective March 1, the initiative is open to companies that meet compliance requirements, including registration on the Dhareeba Tax Portal, updating taxpayer data, and ensuring the timely submission of all tax returns and financial statements.
Participating businesses must also pledge to maintain full tax compliance for the next three years—2026, 2027, and 2028—by adhering to reporting deadlines and paying taxes on time.
Throughout the initiative, eligible businesses may apply for penalty exemptions through the Dhareeba Tax Portal.
Applications will be reviewed case-by-case, with decisions communicated directly through the portal. The initiative aims to ease financial burdens, promote transparency, and enhance tax system efficiency.
Commenting on the program, Khalifa bin Jassim Al Jaham Al Kuwari, President of the General Tax Authority, said, 'The launch of this initiative is part of the General Tax Authority's ongoing commitment to enhancing Qatar's business landscape and strengthening the national economy's competitive edge.
From alleviating financial strain on companies to improving tax system efficiency and fostering sustainable growth, this initiative reinforces Qatar's position as a regional and global investment destination.'
He added that the General Tax Authority is keen to balance tax compliance with corporate support, ensuring fiscal policies align with business needs.
'We encourage all taxpayers to take advantage of this unique and unprecedented opportunity, which provides them with the necessary time to achieve more efficient compliance, further solidifying our collective commitment to building a prosperous economic future for the nation,' he said.
The General Tax Authority has published a comprehensive guideline on its website detailing the initiative's conditions, application process, and eligibility criteria. Taxpayers can also seek assistance through the Authority's call centre or email.

This initiative is aimed at making sure travellers can enjoy comfortable and safe transportation as they celebrate the Eid. With an increase in people wanting to travel during this festive time, the SRTA is stepping up its services to ensure everyone can move smoothly between different areas in Sharjah and beyond. Engineer Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, the head of the SRTA, highlighted the importance of being well-prepared during holidays. He noted that during the Eid holiday in 2025, which runs from June 5 to 8, there will be a noticeable rise in public transport users. To handle this, the SRTA has made plans to operate 180 buses on various routes, aiming to complete around 5,600 trips over the four days. During peak times, buses will come every 5 minutes instead of the usual 45-minute wait. This means shorter waiting times and more convenience for everyone traveling. The authority is committed to making travel easy for people visiting family or exploring popular destinations, both within the emirate and outside it. They are also increasing staff at busy bus stations, especially the Jubail Bus Station, which will be open from early morning until late at night to accommodate the larger number of passengers expected during this busy holiday. The Authority has improved bus services in Sharjah City for the Eid holiday, making travel easier for everyone. They are running a total of 1,144 bus trips each day across 12 different routes, using 104 buses that connect to 543 stops around the city. During the Eid Al Adha holiday, there will be a special boat service operating between Sharjah and Dubai. Abdul Aziz Al Jarwan, who is in charge of transport at the local authority, announced that there will be four daily trips. These boats will leave from the Aquarium Station in Sharjah and arrive at Al Ghubaiba Station in Dubai, working together with Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority. Al Jarwan shared that the Authority is working closely with the Omani transport company, Mwasalat, to run international route 203. This route connects Sharjah with Muscat, the capital of Oman, and offers two flights each day. This service is expected to encourage tourism between the two countries, especially during the Eid holidays. Passengers can board at Jubail station and travel to Al Athaiba station, making stops along the way. Tickets can be purchased online through Mwasalat Oman's website or at their service points. WAM

He noted that Route 22 will not be in service during the Eid holiday because the Souq Al Haraj market is closed. To make things easier for passengers, they have made some changes, including quicker arrival times and more ticket sales points at bus stations and inside buses, to minimize delays and crowding. To manage passenger flow, especially at the Jubail station, the teams have stepped up their preparations. They have increased the number of staff on duty and are providing the necessary support to ensure smooth operations. They are also allowing people to book bus tickets in advance and are keeping a close eye on how things are running to maintain a high level of service. Maritime transport During the Eid Al Adha holiday, there will be a special boat service operating between Sharjah and Dubai. He highlighted that the call center plays a vital role in connecting with the community, gathering and analyzing feedback to improve services in the future.

Egypt Licenses 16 Fintech Firms to Boost Nonbanking Sector Digitisation

Sixteen companies have received fintech licenses from Egypt's Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA) to support the digital transformation of the nonbanking financial sector, FRA Chairperson Mohamed Farid said on Monday (May 26). Four companies are currently registered to offer outsourcing services, with more expected to follow. Speaking at the Caisec25 information security and cybersecurity conference in Cairo, Farid said around 110 institutions now meet the FRA's cybersecurity requirements. He noted, however, that the FRA oversees more than 3,500 entities across various financial activities. The four outsourcing firms operate under a dedicated FRA registry and provide electronic identification, verification, and authentication; digital customer onboarding; electronic contracting; and digital record storage and retrieval. Farid said the FRA aims to build a secure environment that strengthens the nonbanking sector's role in the economy. 'As the regulator of the nonbanking financial sector, which includes capital markets, insurance, and financing activities, the Authority places significant importance on cybersecurity,' he said. 'This involves developing policies and systems to protect customer data and ensure market stability.' He added that the FRA recognises cyberattacks and data breaches as major threats. 'The accelerating pace of digital transformation creates opportunities but also increases cyber risks,' he said. 'This requires urgent development of policies and systems that support sound fintech governance.' Farid also pointed to rapid developments in artificial intelligence, saying institutions must be prepared to manage associated risks and recover from disruptions. 'We need a resilient nonbanking sector that can use technology effectively while handling risks efficiently.' He said building technical capabilities must be matched by improving workforce skills. 'The human element remains central. Specialists in cybersecurity must ensure continuous and comprehensive training for staff.' This follows a recent push by the FRA to digitise financial services, driven by executive decisions under Law No. 5 of 2022, which provides a legal framework for using technology in nonbanking finance.
