A 55-year-old Nepali climber dubbed "Everest Man" reached the peak of the world's highest mountain for a record 31st time on Tuesday, more than three decades after his first summit."Massive congratulations to the legendary Kami Rita Sherpa on his 31st successful ascent of Everest, the highest number of ascents by anyone in history," expedition organiser Seven Summit Treks said."Kami Rita Sherpa needs no introduction. He is not just a national climbing hero, but a global symbol of Everest itself," it added.Sherpa first stood on the top of Mount Everest in 1994 when working for a commercial expedition. He has climbed Everest almost every year since, guiding clients.Sherpa, speaking a year ago after he had climbed the 8,849-metre (29,032-foot) peak for the 29th and 30th times, said that he was "just working" and did not plan on setting records."I am glad for the record, but records are eventually broken," he told AFP in May 2024."I am more happy that my climbs help Nepal be recognised in the world."Seven Summit Treks said he completed the climb on Tuesday as the leader of an Indian army team, adding that he "not only reached the summit himself, but also led and guided the last remaining members of the team to the top".- 'To the next height' -Another Nepali climber, Tashi Gyalzen Sherpa, 29, returned to the capital Kathmandu on Tuesday after he made a record-breaking four summits of Everest in just 15 days, completing the last on May 23, according to 8K Expeditions."I feel proud, it was a very difficult task but I made it a success," Gyalzen Sherpa told AFP after landing in Kathmandu, where his family and mountaineering fans welcomed him."Earlier, many pioneers have scaled the Everest many times, but not four times in one season."The records come as the spring climbing season nears its end.More than 500 climbers and their guides have already reached the summit of Everest since the route opened, taking advantage of brief spells of good weather, according to Nepal's tourism department. The season has so far recorded the fewest number of deaths on Everest in recent years. Two climbers, a Filipino and an Indian, have died on its high camps.Nepal has issued more than 1,100 permits for mountaineers this season, including 458 for Everest, earning more than $5 million in royalties. The country is home to eight of the world's 10 highest peaks and welcomes hundreds of adventurers each spring, when temperatures are warmer and winds typically calmer.Earlier this month British climber Kenton Cool, 51, successfully climbed Everest for the 19th time, extending his own record for the most summits by a non-Nepali.Tourist ministry official Himal Gautam, director of its mountaineering and adventure section, said Kami Rita Sherpa's achievement reflected on the country's wider efforts."Kami Rita Sherpa's record ascent has helped to take Nepal's mountaineering sector to the next height," Gautam said.A climbing boom has made mountaineering a lucrative business since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa made the first ascent in 1953.Last year more than 800 climbers made it to the peak of Everest, including 74 from the northern Tibet side.

BCCI quickly shuts down question on India-Pakistan clash during Asia Cup squad announcement

India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and chief selector Ajit Agarkar found themselves in a tricky situation when a reporter put forth a question on the Men in Blue's upcoming Asia Cup clash against arch-rivals Pakistan, which takes place just months after the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar announce India's squad for the Asia Cup at a press conference in Mumbai on Tuesday, 19 August. AP The drama surrounding India's squad for the upcoming Asia Cup finally came to an end on Tuesday with India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and chief selector Ajit Agarkar unveiling the Men in Blue's XV at the BCCI's Mumbai headquarters. The highlight of the selection meeting and the subsequent announcement was Test captain Shubman Gill being named vice-captain of the T20I side, and senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah returning to the shortest format after more than a year. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Also raising eyebrows during the squad announcement was the absence of Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal from the squad, with the latter having played a key role in helping Punjab Kings reach the Indian Premier League final. Pacers Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, the latter having won the IPL Purple Cap earlier this year, also did not find a mention with Harshit Rana getting picked ahead of them. BCCI steps in to stop question on India-Pakistan fixture Another standout moment from Tuesday's press conference was a reporter asking Agarkar for his opinion on India's upcoming fixture against Pakistan in Dubai on 14 September. The decision to group arch-rivals India and Pakistan in the same group just months after the deadly Pahalgam terror attack and the subsequent Operation Sindoor has been heavily criticised on social media. The BCCI, additionally, has been slammed for remaining silent on the matter and for not taking the sentiment of the nation, particularly the families of those who lost their loved ones in the Pahalgam attack, into consideration. 'Looking at this Asia Cup, there is a big game on the 14th, India versus Pakistan. With everything that has happened between the two countries over the last two months, how will you approach that game,' asked the reporter. The BCCI media manager, however, quickly stepped in and responded on Agarkar's behalf, dismissing his query on the Indo-Pak controversy. 'If you have a question regarding the team selection, you can ask that,' the media manager said. Indian and Pakistani teams led by Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Hafeez respectively were scheduled to meet at the World Championship of Legends last month. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The Indians, who had defeated the Pakistanis in the final of the inaugural edition last year, boycotted both matches including the semi-final, in solidarity with the Pahalgam victims as well as the Indian armed forces.

This must be our starting point: Coach Filippelli after Anantjeet's golden hit

CHENNAI: Skeet shooter Anantjeet Singh Naruka was locked on to the task at hand, gunning down clay pigeons at will in the late afternoon at the Shooting Plaza in Shymkent on Wednesday. With the gold in sight, the 27-year-old was a picture of determination as he inched closer and closer to his goal at the ongoing Asian Championships in Kazakhstan. There were some blips for the Indian with veteran Mansour Al-rashidi of Kuwait, his closest challenger, testing his will. Anantjeet had faced a somewhat similar challenge in the last edition and had narrowly missed out on the yellow metal. Despite Al-rashidi's pressure, the Jaipur shooter remained ice cool and flipped the script this time around to earn himself a gold medal, India's first in the senior category in the ongoing continental meet. Anantjeet was spot on from the word go and had just three misses in the 60-shot marathon final, finishing with a tally of 56. Al-rashidi was just one behind. Qatar's Al-Ishaq Ali Ahmed AO was the third-best in the six-man final. Foreign coach Riccardo Filippelli, who has been the force behind some of the top skeet shooters from the country, was closely following the final unfold. The Italian, a former champion shooter himself, is naturally stoked with this outcome. "The competition was very complicated because of the strong wind and terrible organization. Anantjeet had been receptive from the very beginning and did a camp in Italy before this competition," he told the The New Indian Express from Shymkent. "I can only say that he (Anantjeet) was fantastic in everything... had great preparation and had a great attitude. His performance in the final was impeccable. I'm proud of him because in addition to being a champion, he is an extraordinary guy. This must be our starting point." Anantjeet had returned with a tally of 119 in the qualification in the morning to qualify for the finals. Even though the skeet shooters have been playing second-fiddle to the rifle and pistol colleagues, Anantjeet's gold-medal outcome is not a massive surprise. Despite not making the finals in the World Cups earlier this year, Anantjeet has been a one of the competitive shooters from the shotgun category in the last few years or so. During the said phase, he has a World Cup final medal to his name and is also a Asian Games silver medallist. Even though Filippelli officially took charge of the national skeet team this year, he was no stranger to the Indians. He had helped Anantjeet secure the Paris Olympics ticket last year in the last edition of the championships. His association with veteran Mairaj Ahmad Khan (not part of this event) also goes a long way back and Maheshwari Chauhan, who finished fourth in the women's category, has also taken lessons from him before he joined the team officially. Filippelli's working ethos is to inculcate strong team spirit. "In the last few years, we have grown a lot, the guys are always with me and believe in my 'team' project because not being a team, I think it is difficult for us to win. We have a lot of talent in India and I have identified a few who I think will bring us many medals in the future," he noted. Technique aside, the coach wants his wards to embrace a winning mentality. "I believe deeply in technique but above all, (taking) the right approach and a winning mentality and only by working closely with my players, can I convey these values. Everyone must believe in our project — our federation and our Olympic committee." Senior pro Mairaj is not part of this event but had words of encouragement for his younger counterpart. "Winning gold is not easy and the Asian Championships is important for us. This is a sure sign that things are improving. We have a new coach and a young team. Winning at this age bodes well for him." The gold medal is certainly a good sign for Anantjeet and the rest of the shotgun unit. Bronze for Saurabh, Suruchi Saurabh Chaudhary and Suruchi Singh captured a bronze medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team competition. They shot a combined tally of 578 in the qualification stage before going on to beat Chinese Taipei's Liu Heng-Yu and Hsieh Hsiang-Chen 17-9 in the bronze-medal match.

Jake Paul vs Gervonta Davis rules were revealed weeks ago: ‘10 min rounds, no restrictions'

Jake Paul will take on Gervonta 'Tank' Davis in November this year. This comes after the YouTuber-turned-boxer's bout with Anthony Joshua was canceled, The Ring reported on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Netflix appeared to accidentally post about the Paul vs Davis bout. The post has been deleted. It is being reported that the blockbuster fight will take place at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. Kake Paul attends Ukraine's Oleksandr Usyk and Britain's Daniel Dubois's undisputed world heavyweight boxing title bout(AFP) Have the rules of the Jake Paul vs Gervonta Davis bout been set? Technically, no. But Paul's previous statements have given fans a hint at how the fight will look. The 28-year-old, earlier this year, claimed that a fight between him and Davis was close to being made official. "That was on the one yard as well, but he has to rematch Lamont Roach. 'He wants to get that back. Then we will be back in discussions with Mr. Gervonta. But this is the nature of boxing, you have massive fights on the one-yard line and then they fall through,' he said on the Ariel Helwani Show. He added that the fight would be sanctioned as an exhibition event. Speaking about the rules, Paul revealed: 'It would be an exhibition, 10 three-minute rounds. No restrictions, just the fact we couldn't actually get it professionally sanctioned.' When asked what weight the clash would be contested at, the 'Problem Child' replied: "195." Reporter Mike Coppinger said that the November fight could look like the Logan Paul (Jake's older brother) vs Floyd Mayweather match in 2021. 'When Floyd Mayweather faced Jake's brother Logan in an exhibition, Mayweather couldn't weigh more than 160 while Logan was capped at 190. Would expect some similar exhibition rules for weigh in here,' the reporter wrote on X, platform formerly known as Twitter. "Gervonta Davis was slated for a title fight rematch with Lamont Roach in August while Jake Paul was in talks for a major step-up against Anthony Joshua, the former heavyweight champion. Instead, they will meet each other in what amounts to a show that will no doubt do big business, but is less fighting than it is entertainment given the weight disparity and exhibition rules."
