Netflix fans keep watching Nicolas Cage's 'underrated' sci-fi thriller with 'mind blowing ending'

Netflix viewers can't get enough of what's being hailed as the 'best sci-fi horror film in the last 30 years' featuring Nicolas Cage, a movie that has given audiences sleepless nights.
Knowing first hit cinemas in 2009 with the versatile Cage taking on the lead role. It's a genre-bending piece, blending elements of science fiction, horror, thriller and drama, directed by Alex Proyas as his follow-up to I, Robot, which starred Will Smith.
The plot revolves around a time capsule unearthed at a school half a century after its burial. Consequently, a boy named Caleb Koestler ends up with a cryptic document from a schoolgirl, filled with an unusual code.
Caleb's father and professor John, portrayed by Cage, deciphers it as an encoded message predicting every major disaster over the past 50 years, reports Surrey Live.
The document also predicts three more impending disasters, including a worldwide cataclysm. When his warnings are ignored, John recruits the help of the prophetic author's daughter and granddaughter in a desperate bid to prevent the ultimate catastrophe.
Despite only scoring a 35% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is finding a new audience and gaining appreciation years later due to its availability on Netflix. As of now, it has climbed the ranks of the most-watched films among UK subscribers on the platform, sitting in fifth place, even outperforming the Super Mario Bros Movie.
One enthusiast, commenting on the retro trailer on YouTube, remarked: "Highly underrated movie. Far better than most destruction, end of world movies." Another viewer shared their foresight regarding its future popularity: "I honestly don't see how this film isn't viewed for its masterful execution. I humbly believe that this film will someday be reappraised as being a seminal work in the disaster genre."

Intriguingly, Wendy Rush, the wife of the late Titan innovator Stockton Rush, is the great-great-granddaughter of the devoted Straus pair. According to her LinkedIn, Wendy holds the role of director of communications at OceanGate, reports the Irish Star. Tragically, the Titan's voyage claimed the lives of Stockton Rush, Paul-Henri Nargeolet, Hamish Harding, Shahzada Dawood, and Suleman Dawood, when it imploded underwater in 2023. Since tying the knot in 1986, Wendy and Stockton shared an extraordinary connection to the Titanic's history. With three expeditions to the site of the RMS Titanic wreckage, which lies deep in the North Atlantic, Wendy continues to honour their legacy. Wendy's maiden name reflects this lineage. Born Wendy Hollings Weil, she descends from Minnie Straus Weil, the progeny of Isidor and Ida Straus. The German-born couple, long-time American residents, were already in their golden years – 67 and 63 respectively – when tragedy struck on the Titanic. Documents at the National Archives reveal that the venerable Strauses were travelling back from a trip to Germany with Ida's maid, Ellen Bird, and Isidor's valet, John Farthing, when the catastrophe occurred. Isidor launched his successful retail venture by leasing space in Macy's in 1888. By 1896, he and his brother Nathan had taken full ownership, and he even served as a US Congressman. Ida's loyal maid, survivor Ellen, later recounted the last wrenching moments she spent with the couple. She recalled Ida, in the midst of chaos, entrusting her luxurious mink coat to Ellen, stating she would have no further use for it. In later years, Ellen endeavoured to present the cherished mink back to the Straus heirs, but they respectfully refused it. While searchers recuperated Isidor's body, Ida's was claimed by the ocean. An inscription at their New York mausoleum poignantly reflects their love: "Many waters cannot quench love - neither can floods drown it."

Netflix release first look at Liam Payne's final music project before his death
Netflix has released a first look at Building the Band, a new music competition series featuring the late Liam Payne as a guest judge. The series, which matches singers to form bands without seeing each other, was announced by Netflix in September, before Payne died on 16 October after falling from a third-floor hotel balcony in Argentina. A first-look clip released on Wednesday (11 June) does not show Payne, but Netflix confirmed he appears in the series alongside fellow guest judge Kelly Rowland. Netflix said in a statement the former One Direction star's family reviewed the series and is 'supportive of his inclusion'. The show was one of Payne's final projects.
