Denis Law honoured with commemorative plaque at birthplace

STV News08-05-2025

Denis Law is set to be honoured with a commemorative plaque at his birthplace in Aberdeen.
The Aberdeen-born striker died on January 17, aged 84, more than three years after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia.
Law, who spent most of his career at United, cemented his status as a Scottish football legend after becoming the joint top scorer for his country's team with 30 goals from 55 caps.
Aberdeen City Council confirmed the commemorative plaque was 'unanimously agreed' will be sited at his birthplace at 6B Printfield Terrace.
The Denis Law Legacy Trust made the application on Wednesday.
Aberdeen City Council's Finance and Resources Committee approval goes against normal criteria for plaques, which is that the person should have died at least 20 years ago and have been born more than 100 years ago.
Denis Law, who was Scotland's only winner of the prestigious footballing award Ballon d'Or, has already been commemorated in the city with murals painted on Clifton Court in March.
Finance and Resources convener councillor Alex McLellan said Law demonstrated his 'strong and caring commitment' to younger generations by creating a legacy trust.
'The positive support and opportunities that Denis Law has given through the trust is an enduring way to celebrate our much-loved and much-respected local football hero,' he said.
'Denis Law has been an inspiring role model to so many people as well as being an exceptional footballer – he was and continues to be a hero in Aberdeen and abroad and we are very happy to agree to a commemorative plaque.'
Aberdeen City Council co-leader councillor Ian Yuill said the committee agreement shows the 'depth of feeling' to Denis Law.
'It is fitting he is recognised for all his achievements, not just those on the football pitch,' he said.
Denis received the Freedom of the City in November 2017, with more than 15,000 people lining the streets of Aberdeen as he led the annual Christmas lights switch-on parade.
Denis and his friend Sir Alex Ferguson feature in Provost Skene's House, which showcases people with links to Aberdeen and the North East who have transformed the wider world.
The bronze statue of Denis was unveiled by The King himself in the heart of his home city in Marischal Square, beside Provost Skene's House. Sir Alex Ferguson was at the ceremony to watch the unveiling.

Man Utd 'agree deal' for popular star to stay after nine Old Trafford exits

Manchester United have already announced a number of Old Trafford exits this summer but could soon see an out-of-contract start extend his stay at the club under Ruben Amorim Manchester United have agreed a deal to extend Tom Heaton's stay at the club, according to reports. The 39-year-old goalkeeper has made just three appearances for the Red Devils in a four-season spell. Heaton's contract is set to expire at the end of the month but the parties are set to agree an extension of a further year in the coming days. The shot-stopper is seen as a 'highly valued part of the goalkeeping group and wider squad'. ‌ United have already announced the exits of senior stars Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof at the close of their contracts this summer. The club confirmed on Monday that they were in talks with Heaton over a fresh deal. ‌ The Old Trafford side also announced the departure of academy players however. Hubert Graczyk, Jack Kingdon, Sam Murray, Tom Myles, James Nolan and Tom Wooster have all been released. Heaton is in his second spell with United having come through the club's academy. The veteran went on loan to Swindon Town, Royal Antwerp, Cardiff City, Queen's Park Rangers, Rochdale and Wycombe Wanderers before departing the club to join Cardiff in 2010. The goalkeeper made his name in a stint with Burnley between 2013 and 2019 and made 200 appearaces. After a two-season stay at Aston Villa, Heaton returned to United in 2021. A coaching position has been touted for the ex-Clarets star and that is said to be a long-term option. For now Heaton's services are deemed to be required around the squad in a goalkeeping group that includes Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir. Last summer, Heaton was called upon by England boss Gareth Southgate during the Three Lions' campaign at Euro 2024 in Germany. The veteran was tasked with being a training goalkeeper to assist Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale and Dean Henderson. ‌ Speaking after extending his deal by a single year last July, Heaton revealed he was relishing his role at the club. "I am delighted to continue my stay at my boyhood club," Heaton told club media. "I still feel in great shape and I am ready to offer whatever the squad needs throughout the season ahead. "In addition to on the pitch, I'm learning so much off it for my next steps, whatever that may be. But, first and foremost, I want to push the squad to build on our successes from last season." Two of Scottish football's Italian contingent could be set for moves this summer in what could be a busy transfer window for Scots abroad. It was a hugely successful season for a number of Scottish players in Italy, with Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour winning Serie A with Napoli and Lewis Ferguson lifting the Coppa Italia with Bologna. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad However, down in the second tier of Italian football, there was another Scottish success story - with left-back Josh Doig playing a big part in Sassuolo winning Serie B and earning immediate promotion back to the top flight. Josh Doig helped Sassuolo win promotion back to Serie A this season. | Getty Images Doig has been a regular for Sassuolo this season after joining them from Hellas Verona 18 months ago, and now the 23-year-old is being linked with a move to Juventus. According to reports in Italy, new Juve manager Igor Tudor's transfer priority is new wing-backs and the Croatian coach has been impressed by Doig's development since moving to Italy from Hibs three years ago. Doig is currently with the Scotland squad ahead of their friendly away to Liechtenstein on Monday night and could win his first cap if selected in Vaduz. But his form with Sassuolo, where he has been one of their chief attacking outlets down the left flank, has caught the eye of Tudor, who is expected to play a 3-5-2 formation at Juventus next season. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Doig's price-tag He has also been linked with Bologna wing-back Dan Ddoye, who is also on international duty right now with Switzerland. And if Tudor was to launch a bid for Doig, it could cost Juventus upwards of £12 million to land him, as he contracted to Sassuolo until 2028. Doig came through the youth ranks at Hibs and was part of the team under Jack Ross that finished third in the Premiership during the 2020/21 campaign. He was sold to Verona in the summer of 2022 and then moved on Sassuolo, although he nearly signed for Marseille in France before the transfer fell apart at the last minute. Another former Hibs player could be on the move in Italy, with midfielder Liam Henderson weighing up his future after his contract at Empoli expired last month. A Celtic academy graduate, Henderson was part of the Hibs team that won the Scottish Cup in 2016. He made the move to Italy in 2018 with Bari and has remained there ever since, playing for Verona, Lecce, Palermo and Empoli. It now appears, though, that the 29-year-old could be on his way back to British football. It has been reported that English Championship side Bristol City are weighing up a move for the out-of-contract deep-lying midfielder. Swansea City had also been suggested as a potential suitor, but cold water has been poured on that link by Welsh media outlets.

Plymouth Argyle striker Ryan Hardie should be given a chance to play for Scotland, according to one of his teammates, after hitting double figures for the second season in a row in the English Championship. Hardie, 28, netted ten times for the Pilgrims this season, although it was not enough to stop them being relegated to the third tier of English football. The former Rangers youngster scored 12 goals the season before and Victor Palsson, one of his clubmates at Home Park, is surprised Hardie has not been given the call. It was his form in West Lothian in the 2018/19 campaign that earned the Stranraer-born hitman a move to English football, first with Blackpool and then Plymouth, where he has been for the past five years. Palsson, who scored for Iceland in their 3-1 win over Scotland on Friday night at Hampden, labelled Hardie 'rapid' and revealed that it is one of his ambitions to play for the national team. "He's a good player,' explained Palsson. 'He's a great finisher, an absolute great finisher. He's so quick, he's rapid. So, yeah, those are his strengths. Hopefully we can hold on to him. But he's done really well now. Two years in a row in the Championship, double-figure goals. 'You know, he's a great professional and obviously he wants to play for his country and, you know, I think he's done enough to get a chance in a friendly. He's my team-mate and Ryan's done really well and hopefully, you know, we'll see him play for Scotland in the future.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Scotland head coach Steve Clarke called up Che Adams, George Hirst, James Wilson and Kieron Bowie into his squad for the current international window. He has also used Lyndon Dykes, Lawrence Shankland and Kevin Nisbet in recent squads. Meanwhile, Palsson has revealed that Iceland had 'blood on the teeth' when they realised the uncertainty created in the Scotland team by an early injury to goalkeeper Angus Gunn and the appearance of rookie replacement Cieran Slicker. Victor Palsson heads the ball past Cieran Slicker to make it 3-1 for Iceland. | SNS Group Gunn was replaced just minutes into Friday's match at Hampden after injuring his ankle. With no other option, Clarke turned to 22-year-old Slicker, who is yet to make a senior appearance for club or country. The 22-year-old went on to have a nightmare debut, at fault for all three Iceland goals as Scotland were booed off the pitch. "I mean, I think I can't put myself in the shoes of a goalkeeper,' said Palsson, who netted Iceland's third goal. 'After two minutes you come on and you could see it already in his first few kicks that he wasn't 100 per cent. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad
