Trade Arabia27-05-2025

Hyatt, a leading hospitality brand, has announced that it expects around 50% rooms growth across new and existing markets in Africa by the end of 2030.
In the past two years, Hyatt saw 51% rooms growth in Africa, fuelled by the addition of several milestone properties and first-time brand entries. These included Park Hyatt Marrakech, introducing the luxury brand to Morocco; Hyatt Centric Cairo West, the brand's debut on the continent; Hyatt Regency Harare – The Meikles, Hyatt's first hotel in Zimbabwe; and Hyatt Regency Nairobi Westlands, its first hotel in Kenya.
Most recently, in March 2025, Hyatt Place Nairobi Westlands and Hyatt House Nairobi Westlands opened along Lower Kabete Road. This marks Hyatt's first dual-branded development in Africa, offering guests two distinct stay experiences under one roof, just minutes from Westgate Mall, the Nairobi National Museum, and Karura Forest.
'Last year marked a breakthrough year for Hyatt in Africa, and we're just getting started,' said Stephen Ansell, Managing Director, Hyatt, Middle East and Africa. 'Our growth across key leisure and business hubs reflects a strategic focus on having hotels where our guests and World of Hyatt members want to travel most. As we expand, we remain committed to delivering high-quality hospitality experiences that resonate with both global travelers and local communities.'
In the next two years, Hyatt hotels are set to debut in new markets within the region, including the anticipated opening of Hyatt Regency Lagos Ikeja in Nigeria. Additionally, the launch of Park Hyatt Johannesburg is set for later this year, following an extensive renovation of The Winston Hotel. The luxury property will include 31 guestrooms and is expected to be popular with business and leisure guests alike, offering understated luxury and an elevated home away from home experience with highly personalized, intuitive, and fully engaged service.
'This is an exciting chapter in the growth of Hyatt's portfolio across Africa, as we add hotels with intent in high-demand destinations,' said Felicity Black-Roberts, Senior Vice President Development, Hyatt, EAME. 'We are proud to collaborate with our trusted owners to thoughtfully introduce Hyatt's diverse brands to both new and established markets across the region.'
The upcoming properties are expected to join the Hyatt brand portfolio in Africa, with Hyatt hotels currently present in South Africa, Algeria, Morocco, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Egypt. Some of the Hyatt branded hotels in the region include:
• Park Hyatt Zanzibar – Located in Stone Town, the luxury hotel holds 62 rooms and provides the ultimate haven amongst the area's winding alleys, bustling markets, mosques, and famed Zanzibari doors, featuring magnificent ornate wooden carvings.
• Park Hyatt Marrakech – Opened in 2024, this luxury resort is ideally located, with stunning views of the Atlas Mountains and next to Al Maaden Golf course.
• Hyatt Regency Harare – The Meikles – Marking the first Hyatt branded hotel in Zimbabwe, this hotel offers iconic architecture, charm, luxury, and easy access to major attractions in Harare.
• Hyatt Regency Dar es Salaam, The Kilimanjaro – A modern oasis in the heart of Tanzania's largest city, this hotel boasts a superb waterfront location and spectacular views of the harbour.
• Hyatt Centric Cairo West – Opened in October 2024, this art-focused hotel offers travellers a convenient location near iconic landmarks such as the Giza Pyramids and The Grand Egyptian Museum.
• Hyatt Regency Cape Town – located in one of Cape Town's most vibrant neighborhoods, Bo-Kaap, this property offers guests the opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture while enjoying views of Table Mountain.
• Hyatt Regency Nairobi Westlands – Nestled in the heart of Nairobi's bustling city centre, travellers can enjoy sophisticated lodgings, diverse dining options, and a contemporary selection of amenities and services.

Interview: Seychelles embraces eco-luxury and cultural discovery

As one of the world's most alluring island destinations, Seychelles continues to captivate with its unspoilt beauty, rich biodiversity and refined hospitality. But beyond its postcard-perfect shores, the archipelago is evolving to meet the growing appetite for responsible, experience-driven travel. 'Seychelles has long been seen as a luxury destination, particularly in this region,' says Shireen Francis, Principal Secretary for Tourism Seychelles. 'But it's a luxury that comes with a conscience. Conservation remains at the heart of everything we do.' That ethos of sustainability is far from lip service. The island nation has embedded environmental protection into its tourism framework from the outset. 'Without our environment, without our natural assets, we wouldn't have a tourism industry. So, we've made sure everything is developed in a delicate, balanced way,' Francis explains in an interview with TTN's Jayne Houghton. Tourism Seychelles has gone a step further with a national recognition programme that celebrates operators prioritising sustainable practices, aligned with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) standards. 'We recently introduced a Platinum Award for those who truly excel. The first recipient was Constance Ephelia, who's been on this journey for over a decade. For them, sustainability is no longer just a practice, it's part of their culture.' With GCC travellers increasingly seeking meaningful escapes, Seychelles is ideally positioned, geographically and experientially. 'We're just four hours from the Gulf. That's a huge advantage,' says Francis. 'It's perfect for long weekends or short breaks, and we're very well connected through carriers like Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad.' This air connectivity has bolstered Seychelles' appeal in the region, and the destination is seeing a diversification of travellers; from the traditional honeymooners to families, corporate groups and solo adventurers. 'While romance remains a strong segment for us, we're definitely seeing growth in multi-generational travel and friend groups,' she notes. 'Our resorts are responding with more family-friendly facilities, interconnected rooms and tailored activities.' More recently, the country has been leaning into immersive, culturally-rooted experiences. 'We want visitors to see more than just the beaches,' Francis says. 'We're promoting cultural and community-based tourism, wellness, and sporting events that reflect the richness of our islands.' This year, Seychelles hosted the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup—the first time the event has taken place in Africa. 'It's a proud moment for us,' says Francis. 'And in July, we'll launch the Seychelles Sailing Challenge, where participants explore six islands in seven days. It's a mix of adventure, discovery and friendly competition.' Nature lovers, too, are being catered to with events like the Seychelles Nature Trail Challenge, designed for hikers eager to explore the archipelago's lush interiors. 'It's part of our broader shift toward wellness and outdoor activity, which is what many GCC travellers are looking for.' On the marketing front, Tourism Seychelles has embraced digital transformation wholeheartedly. 'Given our size, we have to be smart with our resources,' says Francis. 'Digital platforms allow us to be far more targeted and cost-effective. We're running virtual training programmes for the trade, webinars, and digital campaigns in partnership with media and airlines.' Strategic alliances remain central to the board's approach, with renewed MoUs — like the one signed with Emirates at ATM — helping extend reach and visibility. 'We believe in working together. With limited budgets, partnerships give us double the impact. Whether it's with airlines, media or tour operators, collaboration always brings better results.' Despite the surge in direct bookings and AI-driven planning, the human touch is far from obsolete, especially in this region. 'Trade remains an integral part of the customer journey, particularly for high-net-worth travellers,' Francis points out. 'They may research online, but they still prefer that concierge-style service. That's where the trade comes in — and why shows like ATM remain so important for us.' In a travel landscape that's ever-evolving, Seychelles is striking a rare balance: remaining true to its roots while adapting to the needs of today's traveller. For GCC visitors, it's a destination that offers both luxury and authenticity — wrapped in a warm tropical breeze, just a short flight away.

Combining his proven track record with his deep understanding of the brand, Ansen is set to shape a workplace culture that empowers its team and reflects the brand's evolving vision. Mohamed Hegab will ensure the property's infrastructure continues to meet world-class standards as the new Director of Engineering. Always leading by example and maintaining open communication with his team members, Hegab has spent the past 13 years in hospitality engineering and facility management across the UAE, Oman, and Egypt. Most recently, his role as Chief Engineer at Hilton Garden Inn Dubai saw him recognised as Hilton EMEA's Engineering Leader of the Year 2023, while overseeing a range of high-impact projects, including integrating smart room controls, and leading major refurbishments. Stepping into the role of Quality Manager, the property welcomes seasoned hotelier Erica Quintero. With over a decade of experience working in front-of-office operations for some of the most prestigious luxury hospitality brands in the UAE and Qatar, Quintero tackles every challenge with empathy, adaptability, and results in mind. Fluent in four languages, she thrives in fast-paced multicultural environments and has successfully led guest-facing departments such as concierge, guest relations, and VIP services. Her skills also span revenue generation, leading and developing high-performing teams, and optimising operations through effective budget and expense management. In her new position, Quintero will apply her 360-degree view of hospitality operations to work behind the scenes, driving quality assurance and service consistency at the resort, ensuring stays that not only meet but exceed guest expectations. Mahesh Ariyanathan brings with him a decade of experience in the UAE's hospitality scene across both lifestyle and luxury properties. Leveraging a strong understanding of local guest preferences, Mahesh will oversee and enhance operations across the hotel's spa, recreation, and beach facilities. Always putting himself in the guest's shoes, he tackles each project with a focus on both creating standout experiences and driving operational performance. In his previous role, he managed recreation across four hotel brands, leading a cross-property team of over 40 employees, all while balancing the launch of a highly successful wellness programme. His leadership style, rooted in service, accountability, and team development, makes him a natural fit to elevate the resort's family-friendly offerings and deliver memorable moments for guests of all ages. Pieter Van Beugen, General Manager of DoubleTree by Hilton Resort & Spa Marjan Island, said: "We are delighted to welcome such a strong group of professionals to our team. Their diverse backgrounds and fresh energy will undoubtedly play a key role in enhancing the guest experience across every touchpoint, continuing to raise the bar for hospitality in the region.
