COIMBATORE: MDMK deputy general secretary Durai Vaiko said his party should receive a specific number of tickets in the assembly election to get a minimum recognition from the
Election Commission of India
(ECI).
However, the final decision on the tickets would be made by the leadership of the party, he said.
MDMK is part of the DMK alliance in Tamil Nadu.
"Since the election is coming, we need to strengthen our structure and have organised meetings of activities in seven zones, including the formation of booth committees," he said while interacting with reporters at the Coimbatore International Airport.
He said the state govt arrested police personnel responsible for the death of Ajith Kumar in Sivaganga district.
He emphasised that the state govt should ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future.
Durai said he had insisted in Parliament that the railways fare hike should be cancelled and the benefits given to senior citizens should be restored.
Discussing globalisation, Durai remarked that 'our students are excelling in various places due to their proficiency in English. All the success came because of the bilingual policy. English is the language of global communication.'
He accused the BJP of playing politics with language.

DMK district secretaries' meeting passes resolution condemning SIR, ‘vote theft'

At a meeting of DMK district secretaries chaired by party president and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at Anna Arivalayam on Wednesday (August 13, 2025), a resolution was passed condemning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar and the alleged 'vote theft'. Considering that the voter list is the primary document for the election process, the resolution passed at the meeting stressed that its accurate and error-free preparation is crucial for conducting independent and fair elections. Despite protests by Opposition parties and a warning from the Supreme Court, the deletion of 65 lakh voters on frivolous grounds is an anti-democratic act, the resolution alleged. It further stated that such actions shatter the level playing field in the electoral arena. The resolution also strongly condemned the BJP-led Union government for detaining and registering FIRs against INDIA bloc MPs, including Rahul Gandhi, who led a protest march towards the Election Commission of India (ECI) in New Delhi. It also condemned the 'biased actions' of the Centre and the ECI. Another resolution also urged that before the commencement of model code of conduct (MCC) in Tamil Nadu and other States, the ECI must ensure that the voter list is verified and confirmed in a free and fair manner. Another resolution thanked the office-bearers for making Oraniyil Tamil Nadu (Tamil Nadu Under One Front) membership drive a grand success.

Odisha bans use of ‘harijan' in official records: Govt tells depts to use ‘scheduled caste' or ‘anusuchita jati' instead; move follows OHRC directive

BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha government has directed all its departments, public and educational institutions, and other organizations to stop using the term 'harijan' in their communications, officials said on Wednesday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The government suggested the authorities concerned that words like 'scheduled caste' in English and 'anusuchita jati' in Odia or other national languages should be used to "denote persons belonging to scheduled castes as notified under Article 341 of the Constitution", according to a letter issued on August 12 by the commissioner-cum-secretary of the ST and SC Development, Minorities and Backward Class Welfare Department. Officials said the letter was sent to all additional chief secretaries, principal secretaries, and commissioner-cum-secretaries. "They have been instructed to ensure that the word 'harijan' does not appear in any official communications, records, transactions, caste certificates, publications, departmental names, or any other form of use," one of the officials said. Authorities have been directed to educate their staff and update existing documents and records accordingly, an official said. They have also been asked to submit a compliance report detailing the actions taken. The state government's move follows guidelines issued by the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) prohibiting the use of the term 'harijan'. These guidelines will be strictly enforced across all government offices, the official added. The term 'harijan' has long been discouraged: in 1982, the Centre instructed all states not to use it to refer to Dalits. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Following fresh guidelines from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, a similar order was issued in 2013, directing states to avoid the word in caste certificates and official communications. The Odisha Assembly has also prohibited its use, officials noted. (With inputs from agencies)

‘Tampered' voter list: ‘Dissolve Lok Sabha,' Abhishek demands fresh elections

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Tuesday demanded the dissolution of the Lok Sabha and fresh elections, alleging large-scale irregularities in the country's voter lists. Speaking at Kolkata airport before leaving for Delhi, he accused the BJP of benefiting from a 'tampered' electoral roll and questioned the Election Commission of India's ['ECI's] integrity. 'In one EPIC number, there are multiple voters. And this is not data provided by any political party, this is ECI's data. Why should the BJP defend the ECI?' Abhishek asked, challenging the ruling party to explain the alleged discrepancies. Abhishek said the issue of faulty voter lists was not limited to Opposition-ruled states. 'It cannot be that your voter list was all clear and Bengal's is faulty,' he asserted, calling it a 'national problem' and accusing BJP of selectively targeting certain states. 'If there is any irregularity in the voter list, then dissolve the entire Lok Sabha. Let all MPs, including the Prime Minister and Home Minister, resign and call for fresh polls,' he said. He also demanded 'criminal proceedings against the former CEC' if tampering was proven. 'BJP came to power because of 'vote chori'. If needed, I will also resign. Let there be fresh elections,' Abhishek declared, adding that any Special Investigation Report (SIR) on the matter should cover the whole country, not just selective states. Referring to Monday's protest in Delhi, during which MPs from the INDIA bloc — including TMC leaders — were detained, he said, 'If they had honest answers, they would have engaged in a discussion yesterday. Instead, the MPs were arbitrarily detained. Women MPs were harassed and dragged to the PS. Our MP Mitali Bag fell unconscious.'
