Red Sox Make Jarren Duran Trade Decision Ahead Of Deadline: Report

The Boston Red Sox are one of the more intriguing teams to follow at the trade deadline. For a while, it seemed like they would be big-time sellers with players like Jarren Duran and Aroldis Chapman likely landing on the market.
But Boston quickly turned its season around following the blockbuster trade of Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. Since then, the Red Sox have gotten hot. They've turned their season around and look to be buyers at the trade deadline.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today recently reported it was unlikely the Red Sox would trade Duran this season, despite the surging rumors that they would opt to do so.

BOSTON, MA - JULY 25: Jarren Duran #16 of the Boston Red Sox is congratulated in the dugout after scoring against the Los Angeles Dodgers during the third inning at Fenway Park on July 25, 2025 in Boston, Massachusetts. More"The Boston Red Sox have no plans to trade outfielder Jarren Duran at the deadline, rejecting the San Diego Padres' offers, and are more likely to move him this winter," Nightengale wrote.
A Duran trade could make sense because the Red Sox have a bit of a logjam in the outfield, but when looking to chase a World Series, it's better to have too much talent than not enough. Holding onto Duran seems like the logical move.
Then, in the offseason, the Red Sox could trade Duran as the centerpiece in a deal to land another ace to place atop the rotation alongside Garrett Crochet. A deal for Washington Nationals ace MacKenzie Gore could make sense in the winter months.
Either way, the San Diego Padres, Cincinnati Reds, and Philadelphia Phillies will likely need to turn elsewhere to find the outfield help they need at the trade deadline. It seems like Duran is staying in Boston.

Mets Predicted To Land Cardinals' Two-Time All-Star In Deadline Heist
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Mets already have an All-Star closer, but they shouldn't say no to adding another. Edwin Díaz has been the most dominant version of himself for most of the season, providing a huge boost to the Mets in save situations. But he doesn't have a particularly reliable setup man at the moment, as Reed Garrett and Huascar Brazobán have stumbled since the start of summer. If the Mets are going to return to the World Series for the first time in a decade, they'll need at least one big bullpen arm ahead of Thursday's trade deadline. ST LOUIS, MISSOURI - JULY 8: Ryan Helsley #56 of the St. Louis Cardinals pitches against the Washington Nationals at Busch Stadium on July 8, 2025 in St Louis, Missouri. ST LOUIS, MISSOURI - JULY 8: Ryan Helsley #56 of the St. Louis Cardinals pitches against the Washington Nationals at Busch Stadium on July 8, 2025 in St Louis, that arm be Ryan Helsley of the St. Louis Cardinals? On Sunday, Matt Johnson of Sportsnaut predicted that the two-time All-Star, who is a free agent at the end of the season, would be shipped to the Mets by the deadline. "The New York Mets' bullpen will be addressed further at the MLB trade deadline, even after the Gregory Soto acquisition. New York likely won't want to get into a bidding war for one of the All-Star closers under contract for multiple seasons, but it can get Ryan Helsley," wrote Johnson. "The St. Louis Cardinals closer boasts a 2.03 ERA over the last four seasons, including an 11.8 K/9. Since he's a free agent this winter, he should be a bit more affordable for the Mets to acquire." It's not been Helsley's best season so far, but the 30-year-old still boasts a 3.00 ERA with 41 strikeouts in 36 innings. With the Cardinals dropping to 54-53 after a hot start, it seems all but certain the closer will be on the move. If the Mets can win the Helsley sweepstakes, they'll be well positioned for a run at their first division title in a decade. Dodgers Predicted To Bring Top AL Central Fireballer To Los Angeles
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Los Angeles Dodgers have been awfully quiet so far ahead of Thursday's trade deadline. Granted, the same can be said of a lot of teams. Major League Baseball's expanded playoff format has pushed most of the trade action right back until the deadline. The Dodgers know they're buying, but they have to figure out who's selling. One team still up in the air is the Minnesota Twins, who entered Monday with a record of 50-55. It would seem they're trending toward selling, and that could be a huge win for the Dodgers. MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - APRIL 09: A view of a Los Angeles Dodgers hat in the eighth inning against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field on April 09, 2024 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Dodgers defeated the Twins 6-3. MoreFireballing Twins closer Jhoan Durán could be the bullpen prize of the trade deadline if he's dealt. And the Dodgers could use another option to close out games, so Durán would be extremely appealing. On Sunday, Matt Johnson of Sportsnaut predicted that the Dodgers would bring Durán to Los Angeles by 6 p.m. ET on Thursday. "The Los Angeles Dodgers anticipated having one of the best bullpens in MLB this season. Unfortunately for Dave Roberts and Co., injuries have decimated the relief corps. It puts Los Angeles in a dire position, requiring an aggressive move," wrote Johnson. "The Minnesota Twins want a premium return for closer Jhoan Duran (1.90 ERA and .537 OPS allowed) and for good reason, since he's arbitration-eligible through 2027. Ultimately, the Dodgers will be willing to win the bidding war to provide stability in the 9th inning for an October run." Not only is Durán potentially the best relief arm available, but the National League is full of teams that need high-leverage relievers. The Philadelphia Phillies don't have a clear-cut closer, and the New York Mets have a pretty thin bullpen as well. If the Dodgers bring in Durán, they'll reassert themselves as top World Series contenders, as the bullpen is one of the few things dragging them down these days. Phillies Surprisingly Named No. 1 Suitor for Top Trade Deadline Slugger
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The trade deadline is fast approaching, and the Philadelphia Phillies are still waiting to get in on the action. In a high-pressure season, the Phillies have mostly played good baseball. But you'd be hard pressed to call them the favorites in the National League right now, and several other contenders have already made moves. The top needs many have identified for the Phillies throughout the summer have been center field and bullpen. But with Alec Bohm on the injured list, third base has emerged late in the game as a sneaky spot to upgrade. PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 20: Eugenio Suarez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks celebrates with third base coach Shaun Larkin #88 after hitting a solo home run against the St. Louis Cardinals during the third inning... PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 20: Eugenio Suarez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks celebrates with third base coach Shaun Larkin #88 after hitting a solo home run against the St. Louis Cardinals during the third inning at Chase Field on July 20, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona. MoreThere's only one third baseman worth pursuing for the Phillies: Arizona Diamondbacks impending free agent slugger Eugenio Suárez. Competition will be stiff, though, if the Phillies want in on the action. However, on Sunday, Thomas Harrigan of labeled the Phillies as the No. 1 prospective suitor for Suárez, purely in terms of need. "Why are the Phillies atop this list? Because when you look at the way this roster is constructed, arguably no team is under more pressure to win now than Philadelphia," wrote Harrigan. "The Phillies got close with a World Series appearance in 2022, but they've taken a step back since then. Bryce Harper, Zack Wheeler, Trea Turner, Nick Castellanos and Aaron Nola are all signed beyond 2025, but each is 32 or older. So are Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto, both of whom are in the final year of their contracts." Harrigan listed six other teams as fits: in descending order, the Milwaukee Brewers, Seattle Mariners, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Detroit Tigers, and Houston Astros. With only four days to go before the Thursday deadline, we'll soon know if the Phillies want Suárez as badly as many now seem to think they should.
