Hong Lok Golf steps into the unknown: ‘If you never try, you never know'
Hong Lok Golf will put his winning streak on the line when he faces a tricky test on Happy Valley debut this Wednesday night.
Victorious in five of six career starts – all at Sha Tin – including the past three on the bounce, Hong Lok Golf will step into unfamiliar territory for the Class Two Cheung Sha Handicap (1,650m).
Fresh from a successful Sha Tin Sunday thanks to the victory of Perfectday, trainer Chris So Wai-yin is confident his stable star will take to the city circuit despite having never even trialled there.
'We didn't have too many options for him but owner [Jackie Wong See-sum] really wanted to race him again, so we picked Happy Valley,' said So.

'It seems like he will handle the track but we don't know yet – we have to take a chance. If you never try, you never know.
'I told the owner that many things are unknown but he said 'we have to try'. I think it might suit him.'
So was thrilled to see Hong Lok Golf draw barrier four for his first appearance at the tight-turning Valley track, ensuring regular jockey Harry Bentley has options.
'It's a small field and having that good draw is most important. The horse is flexible – he can go in front or come from behind – and his form is still good,' said So of Hong Lok Golf, who coasted into second in a recent dirt trial. 'His trial was OK. It was just a soft trial and he looked good.'
After Hong Lok Golf's most recent victory in a Class Two on May 4, So put May 31's Group Three Lion Rock Trophy (1,600m) on the table for his galloper.
Four wins from five starts! 🤯

He eventually decided against throwing the son of Grunt in the deep end in a race won by Pray For Mir from 17lb out of the handicap.
Cody Mo Wai-kit's charge, who Hong Lok Golf defeated in that Class Two in early May, was hit with a 21-point ratings hike for his troubles.
Should Hong Lok Golf win again on Wednesday night and lift his rating well into the 90s, however, So will consider backing him up in the Group Three Premier Plate (1,800m) at Sha Tin on June 22.
'For the Group Three on the 31st, the handicap was no good for us. Cody's horse went up 21 points. That's no good – it's tough to win again,' said So.
'Maybe, we will see [whether we go to the Premier Plate] – let's see how he runs this week first. I want to give him a chance to run at Happy Valley and then we will see.
'I think the 1,650m is suitable for him now but eventually he may need further.'
Hong Lok Golf is one of four runners for So at the fourth-last Valley meeting of the season. He also saddles up Young Striker, Our Lucky Glory and Know At Heart.

Saudi Super Cup: Cristiano Ronaldo creates winner as Al-Nassr beat Al-Ittihad in semi-final
Cristiano Ronaldo extended his Hong Kong adventure on Tuesday, creating the winning goal for 10-man Al-Nassr to beat Al-Ittihad 2-1 on a night of high drama at Hong Kong Stadium. With the teams level, and Al-Nassr reduced by the 25th-minute dismissal of Sadio Mane, Ronaldo galloped onto a forward ball from Nawaf Boushal in the 61st minute, before he unselfishly presented Joao Felix with the easiest of debut goals. When an original decision to disallow the strike for offside against Ronaldo was overturned, he celebrated wildly. Al-Nassr will meet the winners of Wednesday's second Saudi Super Cup semi-final between Al-Ahli and Al-Qadsiah in Saturday's final. Ronaldo and his allies appeared set for a straightforward night when Mane squeezed an attempt beyond the weak defences of goalkeeper Hamed Al-Shanqiti after 10 minutes. Al-Ittihad never looked like exploiting their numerical advantage, however, with Al-Nassr the faster, hungrier and more aggressive team.

National Games: Kho, Ding to lead Hong Kong's golfers in search of gold at Fanling
Taichi Kho and Ginnie Ding will lead a Hong Kong team of established and rising stars into a National Games challenge that could pit them against some of the best in the world. With the likes of men's star Li Haotong, who finished in a tie for fourth at the Open Championship last month, and women's world No 5 Yin Ruoning among their potential opponents, the city has named a strong squad for November's tournament, which is being played at Hong Kong Golf Club. Asian Tour star Kho will be joined by two of his Asian Games bronze medal-winning teammates, Matthew Cheung and Jason Hak Sun-yat, with amateur Jeffrey Shen Wang-ngai completing the foursome. Ding, who is playing her debut season on the Ladies European Tour, is joined by Olympian Tiffany Chan Tsz-ching, Arianna Lau and Sophie Han. Kho, who took individual gold at the Asian Games in Hangzhou and won the World City Championship at Fanling to become the first Hongkonger to win on the Asian Tour, said it would be a 'really special experience to play in such a prestigious event in front of friends and family'. Danny Lai, the Golf Association of Hong Kong, China CEO, said hosting the tournament showed 'just how far the game has come in Hong Kong'.

Saudi Super Cup: Ronaldo fever strikes again, fans flock to stadium hours before kick-off
Thousands of football fans descended on Hong Kong Stadium hours before Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr were scheduled to kick off against Al-Ittihad in the first semi-final of the Saudi Super Cup on Tuesday. Advertisement At around 5pm, all roads leading to the stadium were a sea of jerseys sporting Ronaldo's name on the back, as thousands from Hong Kong, Macau, mainland China and Saudi Arabia made their way to the ground. There was even one spectator wearing a shirt that combined Al-Nassr, Real Madrid and Manchester United colours and badges, all teams the Portuguese star has played for during his illustrious career. And fans outside and inside the stadium brought a party atmosphere, with Al-Nassr ultras banging drums, waving flags and handing out free scarves to rally support for their side. Not that they needed to. 'I came because I like Ronaldo and I support Real Madrid,' said Grace Chan, 24, who travelled from Nanjing. Advertisement 'Also, the opponents tonight have [Karim] Benzema, who is Ronaldo's old teammate. I like Ronaldo because of his values, what he stands for, it's very respectable.'
