Himachal ministers' absence from cabinet meeting unusual, says Jai Ram Thakur

Jun 29, 2025 05:18 AM IST Leader of opposition, Jai Ram Thakur has once again hit out at Congress after four cabinet ministers — deputy CM Mukesh Agnihotri, industry minister Harshwardhan Chauhan, education minister Rohit Thakur and PWD minister Vikramaditya Singh were conspicuous with their absence from the cabinet meeting on Saturday. The education minister has a programme in Chaupal assembly constituency, while three other ministers did not attend the meeting due to personal reasons. In a statement issued from Kullu, Jai Ram Thakur said, 'Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu led Congress government does not take anything seriously. The same is the condition of the cabinet meeting of Sukhu's government at present.' (HT File) In a statement issued from Kullu, Jai Ram Thakur said, 'Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu led Congress government does not take anything seriously. The same is the condition of the cabinet meeting of Sukhu's government at present. The absence of ministers from an important meeting raises questions. Questions are being raised internally whether the absence of ministers in the cabinet is just a coincidence, preoccupation or boycott of the cabinet meeting,' said Thakur while hinting at rifts in the Congress. 'With Monsoon there has been a huge loss of public money due to rain, cloudburst and floods. In such a situation, this is the first meeting of the cabinet and the absence of ministers handling important departments in that meeting raises big questions in itself. The absence of cabinet members in the meeting is somewhere a direct challenge to the leadership,' said Thakur.

K'taka will see new CM before Dasara: Ashoka

Mysuru: R Ashoka, leader of opposition in the legislative assembly, on Saturday claimed that Karnataka will see a new chief minister before Dasara this year. Speaking at an event in Vijayanagar, Mysuru to commemorate 50 years of Emergency, Ashoka said a different chief minister will preside over this year's Dasara celebrations. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "It is now confirmed that there is an agreement on the CM's tenure. The CM is doing all kinds of circus to save his chair," he claimed. Ashoka confirmed there were no ongoing discussions on the post of the BJP state president. "All the differences within the party's state unit will be resolved soon. As per the instructions of the national leaders, a report was submitted," he said. The opposition leader challenged the Congress party to clarify its position on the Emergency imposed during Indira Gandhi's tenure. He insisted that Congress leaders issue an apology if they respect the Constitution. He discussed the Emergency's impact, including widespread imprisonments and deaths of freedom fighters, noting that Congress leaders have avoided acknowledging these wrongs for five decades. "Chief minister Siddaramaiah, who claims to be a patriot, should speak on this issue," Ashoka said. "They are all loyal to one family and saluting that dynasty has become a habit for today's leaders," he added. Ashoka dismissed suggestions of an unofficial emergency under the current central administration. "Siddaramaiah claims there is an undeclared emergency in the country. Nobody has stopped their children from contesting elections. Nobody has prevented them from going abroad and speaking ill of the country. During the Emergency, police decided what newspapers could publish. No such situation exists now," he said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He criticised Congress's handling of BR Ambedkar's legacy and their Emergency-era constitutional amendments. "Congress criticises that the BJP will change the Constitution, but it was Congress that amended the Constitution for the Emergency. They treat Ambedkar as their family property. When Ambedkar died, they didn't provide space for his memorial," Ashoka said.

Maya: BSP to protest if Constitution tampered

Lucknow: Opposing the demand for removal of words 'socialist' and 'secular' from the Preamble, (BSP) president on Saturday said that the words used in the Constitution reflect the soul of the country and there should be no tampering with it. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "The words used in the Constitution and its Preamble reflect the soul of the country. These words were used after a lot of prudence and long and in-depth discussion. BSP's advice to parties trying to do so is that it would be extremely inappropriate to tamper with the provisions and humanitarian objectives of the Constitution," Mayawati said. "BSP is now getting a feeling that it will have to raise its voice against such attempts nationally if parties do not change their anti-Constitutional face soon. If any party tries to alter the Constitution, BSP will not sit back and watch. We will hit the streets in protest," Mayawati said. "Earlier it was the Congress govt at the Centre, and now the BJP-led NDA govt is not following the Constitution in the interest of the people and country. Both the parties and their supporters made unnecessary changes in the Constitution driven by their ideologies, principles, and political interests, which is strongly denounced by BSP," she said, adding that both the parties were on the same page when it came to amending the Constitution. She added that politics was being done in the name of languages which was not in the interest of people and the country. Mayawati demanded that the Election Commission should dispel the doubts being raised over the voters' list and make its stand clear. "Caste frenzy, clash, and violence in religious programmes at several places in the country, and torture and exploitation of Dalits and people from neglected sections is not good. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Such incidents disturb harmony," she said. She demanded that the central govt should stay alert and thwart terrorist activities. Highlighting the issue of women's security in West Bengal, she said that women were not completely safe anywhere. Speaking about her party, she said that since the beginning of 2025, BSP has been reviewing its organisation at the national level and constituting committees at every level. "I passed necessary directions in the matter in the all-India meetings convened in Delhi on Jan 29 and May 18, and in Lucknow on March 2," the BSP president said.
