England races to 109-1 in 16 overs to trail India by 115 runs in fifth and final test
Led by Gus Atkinson's five-for, England quickly dismissed India for 224 on Friday before going on the attack to trail by 115 runs at lunch.
Zak Crawley (52 not out) and stand-in captain Ollie Pope (12 not out) are at the crease for England, which leads the series 2-1. Openers Crawley and Ben Duckett (43) propelled England past 50 in only the seventh over, passing the landmark with one of Duckett's two sixes.
England has hit 19 fours so far in its first innings — although Duckett was out trying one reverse scoop too many off Akash Deep and getting caught behind.
Deep appeared to goad Duckett somewhat after dismissing him, putting his arm around him and leaning in to talk before being pulled away by a teammate. Duckett muttered something back but otherwise did not react.
India earlier resumed at the Oval on 204-6 but could add just 20 more runs in 5.4 overs to its first innings before being dismissed.
Karun Nair was out for 57, trapped lbw by Josh Tongue (3-57), who has proved an inconsistent but effective threat to batters.
Washington Sundar (26) was dismissed an over later by Atkinson, who took 5-33.
England's bowlers proved up to the challenge after confirmation at the start of the day that Chris Woakes will miss the rest of the test, leaving the hosts short of a fast bowler and a very useful lower-order batter.
England is playing the test without captain and series-leading wicket-taker Ben Stokes through injury.
'A day for Thorpey'
England's cricketers donned white headbands in memory of Graham Thorpe on Friday, joining fans in honoring the 100-test veteran.
Thorpe, one of the most respected batters of his generation and England's assistant coach as recently as 2021, took his own life last August.
Friday would have been Thorpe's 56th birthday and, with the match taking place at his former home ground, Surrey said it was 'A day for Thorpey'.

Liverpool signed him as a holding midfielder back in 2023, but he had played as a centre-back before in his academy days. At Liverpool, even at academy level, we haven't seen him play there. He's been deployed as a midfielder, which is clearly his preferred position. However, it was interesting to see him being fielded as a centre-back against Athletic Bilbao on Monday night. Initially, there was a bit of trepidation whether he would be able to cope with the demands of the role, however, Nyoni quashed any doubts aside from the first minute. He put in a commanding centre-back performance, making the most clearances in the match (4) and winning a couple of aerial duels as well. Despite his slender frame he dealt with the physical challenges of the role really well, and he read situations astutely, making four interceptions and a brilliant intervention when Bilbao were clean through on goal and had only him and Freddie Woodman to beat, making it a two on two but really a two on one defensive situation for Nyoni. The way he dealt with the challenge gives food for thought for Slot. In this Liverpool team right now there already are a plethora of midfielders, making the pathway into the first team a difficult one for Nyoni. But what if he can now also not only provide an option in midfield but in defence as well? What if he can become Liverpool's 'new' centre-back? Based on the evidence of this one game, it certainly seems like an option and if that's the case the pathway for him to get more minutes in the first team opens up straightaway. Obviously, Liverpool would need another centre-back option, someone like Guehi. However, Nyoni has definitely proven he can provide depth there, and in turn become one of the 'new' centre-backs Liverpool are desperately lacking.

Australia's burgeoning Test allrounder Beau Webster has been hailed as a "dream overseas recruit" as English county side Warwickshire announced they've snapped up the Tasmanian gun to enjoy a second season at Edgbaston. Webster has signed a deal to play for the Birmingham-based county from the beginning of next season until the last week of July 2026 after the club was left hugely impressed by his allround contribution this year. Are Charlton a sleeping giant beginning to wake?
"People say it's a sleeping giant but I feel like it's starting to wake up." Charlie Kelman saw first hand that Charlton Athletic had finally emerged from their five-year slumber. The 23-year-old striker stood with his defeated Leyton Orient team-mates on the turf as Nathan Jones and the Addicks players climbed the Wembley steps and celebrated with the League One play-off final winners' trophy in May. It was a brutal end to a stellar season on loan with the O's for Kelman, where he topped the league's scoring charts with 21 goals. Just over two months after the Addicks had sealed promotion to the Championship, Kelman was signed on a permanent deal from Queens Park Rangers and is poised to make his debut at The Valley against Watford on Saturday. "For me this was my number one choice. Straight away, as soon as there was interest this was the club for me, there was no other place I wanted to go. I made that clear and it took five and a half weeks but we got it done," he told BBC Radio London. "[I came] Because of the gaffer, because of the size of the club. "From the outside looking in, the project they're building is very exciting and I want to play my part in that." A welcome return after five years Charlton twice won promotion to the Premier League and established themselves as a top-tier club in a golden era between 1998 and 2007. Alan Curbishley was at the helm for much of that success but left in 2006. They were relegated the following year under Alan Pardew. Since then fans have seen multiple changes of ownership, a transfer embargo and relegation to League One. "We've gone through a lot of different owners and managers and that's shown why we were where we were," former Addicks defender Paul Mortimer told BBC Sport. Jones was hired in February 2024 and has brought steady progress, from a 16th-placed finish that year to a strong run of results that ended with promotion in his second season. "The good thing about last year was there was a period where in another time he could have lost his job - we were terrible," Mortimer, who played 226 times across two spells at the club, said. "And then all of a sudden we went on this fantastic run - because they backed him. And they've got to do that again this year." 'Playing at highest level has to be the ambition' Charlton kept 23 clean sheets in League One last season, including one in each of the play-off semi-final legs against Wycombe Wanderers and in the final victory over Orient. And the Addicks have only lost twice in the league at The Valley during his time in charge. "Now that's going to get tested to the maximum because we've gone up a level [and will be playing] against sides who are used to competing in Premier Leagues, not just League One," he said. Former Luton Town and Southampton boss Jones said the first priority is securing survival in the Championship - but ultimately has his sights set higher. "That has to be the ambition, playing at the highest level - to take this club back to where it's been. It's not pie in the sky because this club's been in the Premier League," he said. "We know what we feel is a realistic timescale but to do that you have to keep moving forward and this is another season where we have to move forward." As well as Kelman, Charlton have signed players including Thomas Kaminski, Reece Burke and Amari'i Bell from Luton, Tanto Olaofe from Stockport County, Blackburn's Joe Rankin-Costello, Rob Apter from Blackpool and, most recently, Harvey Knibbs from Reading. Following Saturday's visit of Watford, Jones' side host Stevenage in the Carabao Cup first round before travelling to Bristol City. Leicester City (home) follows before a London derby double-header against QPR (away) and Millwall (home). BBC Radio London's Charlton reporter Louis Mendez said the mood among fans is positive going into the new season. "The fanbase are really buying into it - there's going to be a really high attendance against Watford on Saturday. Highest one in about 15 or 16 years on an opening day," he said. "I don't think anyone's expecting Charlton to storm to promotion again. There's an understanding it's going to be a difficult step up."
