Ispace reveals cause of second lunar lander crash

Japanese startup Ispace has concluded that a hardware anomaly in a laser-based landing sensor caused the failure of its Mission 2 lunar landing earlier this month, the company announced Tuesday.
The company's 'SMBC x Hakuto-R Venture Moon' lander, officially named Resilience, made a hard landing on the lunar surface in the early hours of June 6.
After 18 days of technical review, Ispace concluded that the laser range finder (LRF) — a key sensor used to measure altitude during descent — failed to provide accurate data in the final phase of landing, leaving the lander unable to slow down in time.
'Despite the united efforts and dedication of the Ispace team, our second attempt at a lunar landing was unsuccessful,' said company CEO Takeshi Hakamada. 'We deeply regret that we were unable to meet the expectations of our shareholders, payload customers, Hakuto-R partners, government officials and all others who supported us.'
According to Ispace, the LRF failed to detect a strong enough reflection from the lunar surface, resulting in the loss of reliable altitude measurements. The company ruled out software issues, propulsion failures and power system abnormalities as contributing factors.
Telemetry data pointed to two likely causes: degraded sensor performance during flight or a hardware breakdown — not a software issue like the startup's first attempt with Mission 1, which also ended in a hard lunar landing in 2023.
In a news conference Tuesday, the company's Chief Technology Officer Ryo Ujiie stressed that the company had conducted verification testing, including outdoor trials, but said 'We need to reconsider how we operate.'

Lunar landing technology is highly complex, with a highly limited number of companies and facilities that have the capacity and knowledge to pull off a mission successfully. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) successfully landed its unmanned probe 'SLIM' on the moon in January last year, with Japan joining the United States, Soviet Union, China, Russia and India as the only countries to achieve a lunar landing. However, due to an engine issue, SLIM touched down at an unexpected speed and altitude, causing it to land in an upside-down position with its solar cells facing west.
As part of its measures to prevent another hard landing, Ispace plans to overhaul its landing sensor strategy, including a review of LRF configuration, selection and operations. The company will also convene an external review panel of third-party experts and expand collaboration with JAXA to strengthen its technical capabilities.
The enhanced development and testing protocols are expected to increase costs by up to ¥1.5 billion ($10.3 million) for its next two missions: the Team Draper Commercial Mission 1 (Mission 3) and Mission 4.
However, the company said the additional costs will be realized over time and will not affect its earnings forecast for the fiscal year ending March 2026.
Ispace also reaffirmed that its future mission schedule remains unchanged, with its next landing attempt targeted for 2027.
'Ispace will not let this be a setback,' Hakamada said. 'We will not stop here, but as determined pioneers of the cislunar economy, we will strive to regain the trust of all stakeholders and embark on the next mission. Never quit the lunar quest.'

Regular tests of seawater and fishery products by TEPCO, the Japanese government and others have found tritium levels far below state-set standards. SoftBank Group swung to a quarterly profit, riding on gains from its bets on Nvidia and startups in a boon for founder Masayoshi Son's bets on artificial intelligence technologies. A recovery at SoftBank's signature Vision Fund and the sale of assets such as its T-Mobile U.S. holdings are helping Son double down on bets geared to help him capitalize on booming investment in AI hardware. SoftBank, which had sold $4.8 billion worth of its stake in the U.S. telecom company in June, on Thursday revealed the sale of another $3 billion of the U.S. carrier's stock. The Tokyo-based company reported net income of ¥421.82 billion ($2.9 billion) in its fiscal first quarter, more than double the average of analyst estimates. The Vision Fund logged a ¥451.39 billion profit, helped by a recovery in tech valuations and gains on holdings such as Coupang, Auto1 Group SE, Symbotic and Swiggy. SoftBank's earnings got an additional boost from paper gains on its recent purchases of stock in Nvidia and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. The Japanese company increased its stake in Nvidia to more than $3 billion as of end-March, helping the Japanese investor benefit from the AI accelerator maker's 46% rally during the three months through June. The 67-year-old SoftBank founder seeks to play a more central role in the spread of AI. Central to that push is its chip design unit Arm Holdings and a $500 billion Stargate data center foray in the U.S. with OpenAI, Oracle and Abu Dhabi's tech investment fund MGX. That Stargate push has been somewhat delayed, Chief Financial Officer Yoshimitsu Goto said, conceding for the first time that the $500 billion artificial intelligence tie-up with OpenAI was behind schedule. SoftBank will soon begin concrete talks on its first Stargate project, he said. The Tokyo-based investor was not involved in OpenAI's data center plans in Norway, while OpenAI was leading the rollouts in the United Arab Emirates and Abilene, Texas, he said. Some of the conversations behind Stargate have slowed due to market volatility, uncertainty around U.S. trade policy and questions around the financial valuations of AI hardware, it was reported in May. "Things are taking more time than initially expected, but we'd like to speed things up from here,' Goto said during an earnings conference. "We are now focusing all our operations on AI and are working to expand on multiple fronts.' As part of its multipronged push into AI, SoftBank is slated to invest as much as $30 billion in OpenAI, and it's inked a $6.5 billion deal to buy chip designer Ampere Computing Holdings. Son is also courting TSMC and others about taking part in a $1 trillion AI manufacturing hub in Arizona. SoftBank's shares closed at a fresh record high ahead of the earnings release. U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to unleash 100% chip tariffs but exempt companies moving production to America is infusing optimism for the Stargate project. "Our longer-term outlook for SoftBank Group is cautiously optimistic, with a consensus toward continued business expansion,' said Ashwin Binwani, founder of Alpha Binwani Capital. But concern over whether SoftBank can manage multiple mass-scale funding needs as interest rates inch up is keeping its stock at a significant discount to the total net asset value of its holdings. The company has been selling off assets ahead of such mega-projects and deals as the fair value of the Vision Fund portfolio rose $4.8 billion from the prior quarter. All told, the two Vision Funds sold off assets worth a total of $3.35 billion, including full exits from nine companies. To be sure, SoftBank's total OpenAI investment may be reduced if OpenAI does not restructure into a for-profit entity by the end of the year. And the Ampere deal remains subject to approval by U.S. antitrust regulators and the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S., it said. That acquisition is facing a potentially lengthy probe, it was reported. "Key points to consider in assessing SoftBank include whether investment in the Stargate Project involving AI infrastructure in the U.S. will progress; whether additional investment in OpenAI amid a fluid management situation is tenable,' SMBC Nikko Securities analyst Satoru Kikuchi wrote in a note earlier this year.

Japan gets serious about attracting world-class researchers

Japan's scientific and technological future is at a crossroads. After decades of economic stagnation, a record low birth rate of 1.15 children per woman in 2024 and the fastest-aging society globally — projected to shrink under 100 million within 20 to 30 years — the nation no longer has the number of homegrown researchers needed to compete on the world stage. The good news is the Japanese government has responded with a bold effort to rebuild the nation's scientific and technological competitiveness by recruiting world-class scientists, particularly from the United States. In June, the Cabinet Office launched J-RISE (Japan Research & Innovation for Scientific Excellence), a ¥100 billion ($677 million) package to attract global research talent. J-RISE is a major pillar of the government's broader University for International Research Excellence initiative, which supports top Japanese universities through the national ¥10 trillion University Fund. The fund, managed by the Japan Science and Technology Agency, aims to elevate the global standing of Japanese institutions by supporting world-class research environments. This level of investment signals a clear policy shift: Japan wants to become a global scientific hub. Sadly, this important strategic pivot is taking place against a backdrop of rising nationalist sentiment and economic frustration, neither of which bode well for attracting world-class researchers. Inflation in Japan has surged to 41-year highs, driven in part by a weak yen and rising import costs. While major Japanese firms agreed to the largest wage hikes in decades this year (around 5%), real wages have remained stagnant since the mid-1990s, unlike the 30%-50% gains seen in other Group of Seven nations. Younger generations, in particular, feel left behind — burdened by job insecurity, shrinking pensions and an economic system that hasn't worked for them in over 30 years. This economic disillusionment is fueling political extremes. In the recent Upper House election, the new conservative party, Sanseito, won 14 seats by channeling public frustration on immigration. Sanseito's platform, guided by a 'Japanese First' ideology, calls for further restricting land purchases by non-Japanese and tightening immigration laws — despite the nation's worsening labor shortage. It draws on populist tactics: Its leader, Sohei Kamiya, has explicitly emulated U.S. President Donald Trump's style to channel economic frustration and cultural fear into votes. Yet, according to a 2023 study by an independent think tank, Japan faces a projected shortage of more than 11 million workers by 2040, making foreign labor not optional, but essential. While Sanseito's messaging typically targets foreign land buyers and blue-collar workers, the atmosphere it fosters does not distinguish between different kinds of foreigners. Once xenophobia is normalized, it doesn't stop to distinguish between a factory trainee and a quantum physicist. A scientist considering relocation to Japan may not be the intended target — but the underlying message is loud and clear: 'You are not fully welcome here.' Japan faces serious demographic headwinds. A 2024 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development report warns that if current fertility, employment and immigration trends continue, the population could shrink by 45% by 2100 and the labor force by over 50%. In response, public opinion is slowly evolving. A 2024 Asahi Shimbun poll found that 62% of respondents supported increasing foreign workers in labor-shortage sectors — up from 44% in 2018 — with stronger support among seniors. Yet acceptance doesn't always translate to inclusion. Studies from the OECD and other researchers show that many Japanese remain hesitant about immigrants settling permanently or living nearby, even when those immigrants are skilled professionals in essential fields like health care. Cultural and identity-based concerns still act as quiet barriers to true integration. And yet, Japan is entering a global competition to recruit world-class scientific talent — especially, as mentioned earlier, from the United States, where political volatility has shaken researchers' confidence. In response to the Trump administration's proposed severe cuts to U.S. science funding — including plans to slash the National Science Foundation by over 50% and the National Institutes of Health by roughly 40% — several countries, including Germany, France and the U.K., launched targeted initiatives to attract U.S.-based scientists. These efforts addressed growing concerns about unstable funding and politicization of research, offering fast-track visas, generous start-up grants and internationally oriented academic environments. Japan has attempted similar talent recruitment programs in the past, including the World Premier International Research Center Initiative and various Japan Society for the Promotion of Science fellowship programs. But these often fell short due to rigid institutional structures, lack of long-term career pathways, limited English-language support and persistent language barriers — all of which hindered integration for scientists and their families. J-RISE appears to be the most ambitious effort yet, but its success depends on whether Japan can create a truly welcoming research ecosystem. It arrives within the broader context of global competition. And while bold in its funding and goals, it must also confront the same core challenge other countries have faced: Can policy alone attract world-class scientists if the broader society signals ambivalence — or even resistance — toward foreigners? Science doesn't flourish in closed societies. It depends on openness to ideas, to people and to new ways of thinking. World-class scientists choose where to live and work based not just on salary or prestige, but on whether they and their families will feel safe, respected and welcome. Japan's leadership should be commended for its commitment to strengthening scientific excellence. But talent cannot be recruited with money alone. If Japan wants to lead in science and innovation, it must create an ecosystem that matches its ambitions — one that is not only globally competitive, but also socially inclusive. That means not only welcoming foreign scientists, but also fully engaging underrepresented domestic talent — especially women — who have long been overlooked and underutilized in Japan's science and innovation landscape. The stakes are high: Without a cultural shift, even the best-funded policies may fail to secure Japan's future.
