Car crash in north Charlotte claims life of 19-year-old
1 dead after crash in north Charlotte, CMPD says
The crash involved a black Infinity G35 driven by Celis, who was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The vehicle collided with a Freightliner tractor-trailer, causing significant damage to both vehicles.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit, along with the DWI Task Force and Crime Scene Search, is conducting an investigation into the crash.
Preliminary findings suggest that Mr. Celis was traveling at a high rate of speed northeast on Sunset Road when he lost control of his vehicle, crossed the center median, and collided with the tractor-trailer traveling in the opposite direction.
It was noted that Mr. Celis was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, which may have contributed to the severity of his injuries.
The investigation is ongoing, and it is not yet known if impairment was a factor, as toxicology results are pending.

American Airlines Facing Heat for Flight Attendant's Shocking Act
American Airlines is dealing with the fallout stemming from a former flight attendant's illegal behavior during trips. Last week, a Union County, N.C. family announced it was filing a lawsuit against the airline, months after former United crew member Estes Carter Thompson pleaded guilty to attempted sexual exploitation of children and possession of child pornography after being caught filming passengers with a hidden camera installed in the plane's lavatory. Thompson is currently serving an 18-and-a-half year prison sentence. The Union County family's daughter, who was 11 years old at the time, had been filmed while using the bathroom on a return flight to Charlotte from Disney World in 2023. She is the third victim to come forward, and her family is suing the airline, arguing that it didn't do enough to prevent the incident because some of Thompson's fellow employees had previously complained about his behavior. The girl has reportedly been left mentally and emotionally scarred by the incident. "It's just sickening," the family's attorney Paul Llewellyn said in a statement. "There's enough to worry about as a parent. It's the last thing you think when your child uses an airplane bathroom." This saga began two years ago The case against Thompson and American Airlines began when a 14-year-old girl traveling from Charlotte to Boston in September of 2023 found the flight attendant's iPhone planted in the lavatory. After reporting it, the FBI found other victims stored in Thompson's phone, including the Union County, N.C. girl. The FBI then reached out to the victim's family, showing them the illicit photos. "This happened on their watch," Llewellyn said. "Abuse happened on their watch." American has acknowledged the accusations The family of the original victim from the Charlotte to Boston flight also sued American, with the two sides settling earlier this year. The airline has issued a brief statement on the entire ordeal. 'American's core mission is to care for people — and the foundation of that is the safety and security of our customers and team," the statement reads. "We are reviewing the complaint, and we take the allegations involving a former team member very seriously.' 15-year-old student athlete ID'd as victim of gang-related stabbing in Costa Mesa
Authorities have identified a victim of a fatal stabbing in Costa Mesa Saturday as a 15-year-old Newport-Mesa Unified student whom social media reports describe as an up-and-coming soccer player killed in an incident being investigated as a gang-related attack. Allison Castillo — a student athlete who was recently invited to play soccer in Spain — was identified by the county coroner's office Monday as the teenager found collapsed in an outside courtyard on the 700 block of Shalimar Drive by police. First responders were contacted Saturday at 12:30 p.m. regarding a stabbing and arrived to find the teen suffering from a life-threatening wound, according to a Costa Mesa Police Department release issued Sunday. Officers and paramedics performed CPR at the scene and eventually transported the victim to a nearby hospital, where she died of her injuries a few hours later, the release stated. Although CMPD spokeswoman Roxi Fyad declined to release Castillo's identity to the public, Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman Gerard McCann confirmed Monday coroner officials had identified the victim as Castillo, a resident of Costa Mesa. During their investigation of the incident, police detectives determined the stabbing may have involved a suspect with known gang ties, at which point investigators from CMPD's Gang Unit were called to the scene. 'The suspect was known to law enforcement as a known participant in illegal criminal gang activity,' Fyad said Monday. That individual — Matthew Juarez, 31, of Anaheim — was quickly traced to a residence in the city of Anaheim, where he was detained without incident. Juarez was booked into the county's intake release center on Sunday and is awaiting charges from the district attorney's office. Newport-Mesa Unified School District officials acknowledged Castillo was a student of the district, although a spokesperson did not indicate which school the student attended. 'She was a student in our district, and we are saddened by her passing,' the spokesperson said in a statement to media, declining to share further out of respect for the victim's family. 'Counseling and support services are available for our school community.' Castillo reportedly played soccer for two years with So Cal Select, an independent scouting program that prepares young athletes to play in college- and professional-level international tournaments, according to the organization's Instagram page. An online GoFundMe account established on behalf of Castillo's family recalled the youth as 'the life of the party, always bringing joy, laughter and warmth to everyone around her.' 'Her kindness, her ability to inspire, and her loving nature changed lives,' the page read. 'She was a kind soul who didn't deserve what happened to her. We demand justice for Allison, and we will not stop until those responsible are held accountable.' Costa Mesa police detectives are asking anyone who may have information about Saturday's incident to contact Det. Eloisa Peralta at (714) 754-5039 or Investigator Eric Molina at (714) 754-5694.

Mom arrested for ‘firing shots in the air to break up fight at back-to-school event'
A mother in North Carolina was arrested after she broke up a fight at a back-to-school event on Saturday by allegedly firing a gun into the air, according to local police. Cherez Davis, 34, was arrested after she was accused of inciting panic and carrying a concealed weapon. She was released on a $50,000 bond. On Saturday Davis was reportedly at a back-to-school fair at CW Williams Community Health Center's facility in Charlotte, North Carolina. Her son and another boy got into an argument that was made worse when another adult got involved, Davis told police. She then allegedly reached into her backpack and removed a handgun, which she fired twice into the air. She then put her gun away and left the area, WBTV reports. According to police, the gunshots sent a crowd of more than 100 people fleeing for cover. No injuries were reported. Witnesses who spoke to police described Davis and she was found soon after by investigators. According to a police report the gun that Davis allegedly used in the shooting was recovered by police. The health center issued a statement celebrating the success of its event but also noting the gunshots. "That one moment when a woman fired 3 shots in the air was an isolated incident that occurred toward the end of the event," the facility wrote in its statement. "We are saddened that our community, vendors and team members experienced this, but are so thankful that no one was harmed! C. W. Williams Community Health Center's looks forward to your continued partnership and support." It went on to encourage the community not to let the shooting "detract or distract us from what was accomplished by the tireless work of our team developing and successfully executing the best Back to School Health Fair ever for families and children of our community."
