Vance issued the challenge in a
TikTok
this spring. The post is captioned, 'No gimmicks, no games, just a footrace for $100 off.'
The TikTok has been viewed more than 148,000 times so far.
Vance, a 19-year-old junior at Sam Houston State University and former high school athlete, says the idea came from a simple place: Wanting to make car buying feel a little less like a chore.
'It's supposed to be fun,' Vance told
Motor1
over the phone. 'If you're thinking about buying a new car, that should be exciting, not stressful.'
'People hear 'car dealership' and tense up. I wanted to break the ice a little,' he added. 'I'm just a regular guy trying to make it. I've got two roommates, and I drive a 300,000-mile truck. I'm not out here to scam anyone.'

The rules of the race are pretty flexible: beat Vance in a 40-yard race across the lot and get $100.
Vance says he's open to longer or shorter distances depending on the customer's energy or sense of humor.
He's done two official races so far, he says. There have been other willing opponents, but sometimes scheduling and logistics have gotten in the way.
Vance recalled that one customer pulled up when he was mid-sale with another client and honked at him from across the lot, yelling, 'You ready for that race?'
'I told him, 'If you'll work with another salesperson while I finish up, I'll race you when I'm done,'' Vance said. 'I meant it.'
Winning While Selling
So far, Vance says he remains undefeated. He played 6A varsity football, ran cross country, and wrestled in high school.
But prospective racers/customers shouldn't feel discouraged.
'I'm not trying to humiliate anyone,' he said. 'If you show up ready to run, I'll honor it. Win or lose, we'll both probably be out of breath.'
The lighthearted stunt has given Vance a modest dose of internet fame.
He insists his offer is about reshaping the experience as much as it's about getting him some attention and new leads.
'There are too many dealers out there who treat people like numbers,' he said. 'If I can make one person smile, or make the process a little more human, that's a win even if I have to sprint for it.'
People largely appreciate Vance's approach to sales, though some pointed out that any winner's purse wouldn't reduce the cost of a typical GM vehicle by even half of a percentage point.
'100 dollars isn't doing anything; this man just like racing,' one wrote.
Another gave Vance kudos for his attitude, writing, 'God forbid someone makes car buying a little more fun.'
Yet another appeared ready to get in the starting blocks. 'Let's lock it in,' they said. 'These legs haven't ran since track 5 years ago.'

Nearly 20 cars destroyed in massive Santa Ana carport fire
More than two dozen cars were destroyed or damaged in a massive fire at a Santa Ana carport early Wednesday morning, and investigators are working to determine what sparked the destructive blaze. Firefighters were dispatched to the 800 block of S. Sullivan Street at around 3:20 a.m. after learning of the blaze, according to the Orange County Fire Authority. Upon arrival, they found 19 vehicles that were fully engulfed in flames. By the time they were able to extinguish the fire, four other cars also sustained damage. One person was treated at the scene for minor injuries, but it's unclear what the nature of those injuries was. People living in the nearby Villa del Sol apartments were woken up to the sound of explosions and blaring car alarms when the fire erupted. Many of their cars are now destroyed. Investigators are working to determine what may have started the fire and have not released any details on a possible suspect. Property management at the apartment complex has not yet returned CBS News Los Angeles' request for comment on the matter.

Porsche Said To Be Readying All-New, Gas-Powered Compact SUV
Even as the present U.S. administration is busy rolling back emissions regulations, much of the rest of the world continues to tighten theirs, forcing automakers including Porsche into making tough decisions about whether or not to replace aging gas-powered models with EVs. At present, Porsche is taking a "let's do both" approach with its Macan compact SUV that currently exists as both an ICE and purely electric-powered vehicle. But it's gradually phasing out the gas-fed Macan, which is already gone in Europe and will soon be here in America as well. So, it's EVs only now for Porsche from here on out? Not so fast, as it appears that a new compact crossover Porsche is developing to join the Macan in its lineup will be a gas-fed model, possibly a hybrid of some form. Porsche is developing a new gas-powered compact SUV to join its lineup by 2028, potentially replacing the current gas-only Macan. This model may include a hybrid version and will be distinct from the Macan EV, reflecting Porsche's adaptive strategy to market demands. This summary was generated by AI using content from this MotorTrend article. Read Next According to a recent Car and Driver report, Oliver Blume, CEO of Porsche, stated on an earnings call that there's a gas-powered crossover on track to join the Porsche SUV lineup as soon as 2028, that may come with a new name. While the size will probably be very close to that of the current Macan, this new SUV will be distinct from the Macan EV that will continue with that nameplate. We contacted Porsche to see what we could get confirmed, but it's not terribly much. 'Once the combustion-engine models of the same name have been phased out, the Macan will be sold exclusively as an all-electric model, worldwide,' a Porsche spokesperson told us via email. 'At the same time, Porsche is continuously monitoring market development and customer demand. If necessary, the company looks ahead and adapts its product strategy.' Part of that evolving product strategy for the new compact SUV may be to add a hybrid version of the model to supplement any pure, gas-powered engine option. Porsche also confirmed that this smaller crossover will be entirely unique from the Macan EV but will have similar sporting characteristics that make it a Porsche and that it 'would benefit from synergies.' While Porsche wouldn't confirm the 2028 timeframe that Car and Driver stated from Blume, the spokesperson said it's expected to be launched 'towards the end of the decade.'
